ESPN.com to cover Major League Gaming

In a press release today ESPN and MLG (Major League Gaming) announced a partnership for ESPN to begin covering MLG's tournaments and leagues providing news, commentary, player information, etc.

"ESPN.com, the leading online sports destination, today announced it has entered a content agreement with Major League Gaming (MLG), the leading professional video game league.

ESPN will serve as a primary outlet for news about MLG, providing extensive digital coverage of MLG’s 2008 Pro Circuit Competitions, including exclusive streamed matches, pro player interviews, and scores and stats. Additionally, MLG will host ESPN co-branded online video game tournaments.

ESPN will be on site at each of the 2008 MLG Pro Circuit Competitions, reporting news from its own coverage booth for various ESPN programs and platforms, including ESPN360.com, ESPN’s signature broadband sports network.

Additionally, ESPN.com will launch a competitive video gaming section replete with all of the latest news, information and video as it relates to competitive gaming. The section will include background on MLG, interviews with marquee players, video from past competitions and the ESPN/MLG Top Ten, which includes regularly updated video highlighting top game play from MLG pros and players. ESPN.com will announce details of MLG’s 2008 Pro Circuit season in the coming weeks."

Being a journalist in the gaming industry I do think this is a great opportunity for, what gamers like to call, "eSports". However as big of a fan as I am of games I have always played sports throughout my life and I don't buy gaming as a sport. When I go out and play 3v3 bball tournaments in the summer, thats a sport. But my late night sessions of Team Fortress 2 do not qualify in my view.

What do you guys think? Is the world ready for this? How will readers react to this move by ESPN? I don't see much negative feedback really affecting them, the gaming coverage is optional to view. But is there a credibility question here? Do games deserve such a pedestal and publicity?

I thought it was a stretch for ESPN to cover poker, but the money was right, and it is hugely popular. And of course the ratings have been through the roof.

And while this will probably be limited largely to the website it still doesn't seem like these audiences crossover much.

And to top it off competitive gaming is covered by tons of sites all around the world.

What is in it for ESPN? Attracting the gaming audience so they tune in to sports? In my experience ESPN is pretty much the "it" place for sports news as it is.

I do...and while its not my cup of tea (what-so-ever...i can't skateboard to save my life), its incredibly hard and very much an interest to millions of people...

and while some loathe the marketing event that is the X-Games...it is the pinnacle of the sport

as is the Super Bowl to the NFL...but a lot of people just watch it for the commericials...

I'll cave on the X-Games. For some time I was elitist about that too. But if we can call say figure skating, or gymnastics a sport, why not them is the conclusion I have slowly come to.

Sure it isn't a traditional sport per say, and its not my cup of tea, but I give the X-Games a pass.

Console and or PC gaming, not so much.

The "E" in ESPN stands for entertainment. Not everything they televise is a sport. Ever hear of the ESPY's?

I watched Madden Nation the other day (someone told me about it) and I couldn't believe it. Interviewing these kids like they're athletes.

Even more fackin' unbelievable is the winner gets $100K. Damn straight I'll go get an XBox or a piece of plywood with wheels on it for 100 grand.

KD what about the Coach Cam! Check this out a few months ago one of the kids representing Cincinati was down by like 5 with a minute to go and they put him on the coach cam and he says this almost verbatum: "I'm not doing a good job motivating the guys. I need to get Carson to focus on throwing the post to the back hip so the safety won't jump the routes. If I can get the linemen up for this next drive, I think we have a shot"

WTF!!!! Your not a real coach, these aren't real players and this isn't a real situation. If I'm playing with the Iggles in Madden and I throw three picks with McNabb I don't bench him for playing bad. I threw the picks, he's just part of a machine.

But these Madden Nation kids treat Madden like it's real life and it shows me that they never played competitive sports.

i mean, i see his point and yours...

for one, in madden, you can jump a route w/ your safety...on the other hand...there's no motivating...you are controlling the guy...

so in effect, he's just playing it up

but that doesn't make it not stupid

Or the one kid who said he discovered a weakness in another guy's defense.

"I should be able to exploit his weakside by running to the strong side then going long when the corner comes up to double up filling the hole."

Huh?

Its a game. If the kid has a weakness it's because his thumb falls off the controller. Sheesh.

It's like fantasy players. "I can't believe Albert Pujols went 0-5 against that rookie. Dude is costing me money."

Cracks me up.

why are you so elitist as to exclude extreme sports? I would bet my life that not one of us here is in close to good enough shape to do anything close to what they do. Skateboarding is nothing different than Snowboarding/Skiing, which both are olympic sports, btw. If you have even watched more than say 15 minutes of any x Games event, you would realize how wrong you are.

A friend and I are actually debating this esports=sports thing.

I would define sports more along the lines of what i pulled up on google: "an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition the occupation of athletes who compete for pay"

His definition is more the wikipedia style: "Sport = Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively"

But by those means beer pong, pool, darts, gaming, poker are all sports. And that I dont buy.

Just because a game is played competitively doesnt make it a sport in this guys eyes.

The problem is that Video games change to rapidly. Everyone wants the next hot game so that you can't build a following around any one game, heck you can't build a league around any one video game system. And no one is going watch a bunch of computer geeks play World of Warcraft. The game has to have mass market appeal (like madden), yet change enough each year to keep people interested. This goes counter to what sells when marketing a league or a tour.

Poker works because the game has not changed in over 100 years. Heck a cribbage league would be more successful for the same reason. Extreme sports work because they are accessible. Anyone can ride a snowboard or a bike, or Rollerblades. You might not be able to do what they do, but you can feel involved and attached.

That's just the games issue never mind the personalities issue. Again WoW, no one wants to watch those people play video games. People can and will watch, they just won't watch those people.

Pip, while I agree with your in principle, your statement that games change too much and you can't build a following is untrue

With that said, what you're referencing might be Madden 0X, which does change every year, even though legitimate improvements are only made once every few years, namely through a change of platforms...

But in my starcraft example, the game is 10 years old and still enjoyable (my dad claims that Starcraft and Age of Empires...series are his favorite games...)

A lot of games that receive this type of appeal are series games, or games that are either done by the same designers or on the same engine

but I think watching those games...like a competition is kinda stupid. I dunno, maybe it'll get better...probably not for me. I guess i'd rather just play myself

But, there is a market already...just not ours...

There's about 80% of ESPN.com I do not explore, and will never go to, so if they want to cover competitive gaming, that's fine. And there's a few hundred other channels besides ESPN's family so if they decide to eventually show competitive gaming on TV, I won't care.

I think some of the elitism in this thread is laughable. If you don't like ESPN's coverage of poker (I for one do not), then don't watch it. If you don't like the X-Games, don't watch them.

I think it's silly that we spend so much time and effort on arguing over what should and shouldn't be on some cable channel.
