Double Standard

I feel that there is a huge double standard when it comes to performance enhancing drugs.  In the NFL players are caught serve their suspension (Merriman, Rodney Harrison), and go about their careers and receive accolades along the way.  In the MLB people who have not even tested positive are heavily scruntinized and their reputations tarnished.  I don't feel this is fair and am looking for any ideas on why there seems to be so much stigma surrounding drug use in baseball, but in the NFL there is little talk.

I would love a WHOLE lot more reasoning than just 4 sentences. :) You're on the right track.

Tmil I saw your article a couple a days ago after writing this. Yours is written much better and more in depth, this was just a thought that I have and wanted to share it. I was not trying to steal anything from you. Sorry if I gave that impression.

I think that one of the biggest reasons for this is the lack of overall media devoted to a drug problem in the NFL. MLB is so bad that Congress has gotten involved. The majority of the population are not as enlightened to the PED issue as many members of this site may be. When MLB was on the frontpage and big name stars were having their names brought up, regular people started to notice and talk and make a fuss. That is when the MLBers began to get punished in the court of public opinion. The NFL has been able to avoid this because the usage of PEDs by their athletes has been rarely documented compared to the way the alleged usage of athletes like Mark Mcgwire and Barry Bonds has been broadcast around the country. Even though two Pro Bowlers have been caught using, the NFL still has had little trouble. What will happen if someone like Tom Brady or Peyton Manning show up on a list seized by an FBI raid of an internet pharmacy?

It is not that it has been rarely documented, it's that while MLB burried their heads in the sand, the NFL came up with a testing policy.

Your right. Scrap the Mitchell report, contrary to what I was taught two wrongs have definitely made a right in this situation. C'mon, give me a break. Look at how differently the two leagues handled the situation. I would also like to point out that I, along with many others, hold just as much contempt for Merriman and Harrison as I do Bonds and Clemens.

The two Leagues did handle it differently. But the MLBPA is much more powerful than the NFLPA.

LockerRoom? Anyway, I think it's all about how the player deals with it. Merriman manned up and everyone accepted his apology, and Rodney Harrison... well - I don't think anyway was really surprised.

This is my first day on the site, I moved this to the Locker Room. Do you think McGwire's chances for the HOF would be any better had be manned up and admitted using illegal stuff? He said he was on Andro, but that was not banned at the time.
