I have this strange affliction when it comes to the Olympics, which I really feel is more the rule then the exception anymore.
I don’t like them. I don’t like the Olympics. They are boring and weighted heavily to a few countries (USA, Russia, China, etc.) to the point that you can name the winner before any given event.
So what is the affliction?
I watch almost every minute of every event I can. Does this make me a hypocrite? Probably, but I feel that the majority of the world feels this way. But, my enjoyment of the Olympics reached a new height when I just saw this article in the Wall street Journal. The headline reads: “CCTV Gets Wrong Kind of PR” and it starts out with the same boring diatribe about the public relations of China. But that is where it ends.
“Since last Friday, hundreds of thousands of Chinese Internet users have watched an online video showing Hu Ziwei, wife of popular sportscaster Zhang Bin, hijacking an Olympics news conference to denounce her husband for infidelity.”
Wait…what!?!
It continues:
"’Just two hours ago I found out that Mr. Zhang Bin is having an illicit relationship with a woman other than me,’ said Ms. Hu, after interrupting him on stage during the launch of China Central Television's Olympics coverage.
‘The coming year is the Olympic year, and the whole world will be watching China,’ she said, while fighting off attempts to remove her from the stage. Apart from his sportscasting work, Mr. Zhang is deputy director of CCTV's sports channel, while Ms. Hu herself is also a well-known TV talk-show host.
CCTV declined to comment. The clip, an embarrassment for China's biggest broadcaster, is also an indication of how China's high-profile Olympics will be vulnerable to unexpected events and activists who want to draw attention to their own causes.”
Of course the CCTV video was edited, but some great bystander put the original on the internet for all to view – and we have.
This is amazing – especially since the Chinese government has a “technical firewall” to help regulate internet content, yet they have trouble with videos.
“Many online commentators also called the incident an embarrassment for the Games. ‘People are supposed to pay attention to the Olympics, but now it turns the spotlight to CCTV anchors' affairs! Shame!’ read one anonymous comment on Tudou. (similar to Youtube.com)”
I don’t see that…I see this as being something quite humorous – not the infidelity, but the fact that she HIJACKED a press conference.
Are you interested in the translation? Well, thanks to the Wall Street Journal, here it is:
… I am here on the stage not as an anchor, but as the wife of the person beside me, Mr. Zhang Bin.
Would you please spare one minute and listen to me?
It is a special date for the Olympics Channel and for Mr. Zhang Bin.
But for me, it also a special day.
Just two hours ago, I found out that Mr. Zhang Bin is having an illicit relationship with a woman other than me.
The coming year is the Olympic year, and the whole world will be watching China and Chinese people.
But a French diplomat has mentioned before that China won't become a powerful nation until it can export its value system.
If Chinese people don't have a great leader to build their value system, then what sense does it make?
Please allow me to finish my words. Is this the way you treat a weak and poor lady?
I have one last thing to say.
Let's fight politely.
But that French diplomat mentioned before, China won't become a great nation until it can export its value system.
Standing before us is the prim and proper Mr. Zhang Bin … but he is not able to face himself
and not even his harmed wife
I believe that if China wants to be a great country
... Do you guys have any conscience left?
Leave me alone!
This the last Sunday left (before 2008).
Tomorrow, everybody will begin spending a long vacation, but Zhang Bin and I are not able to do that...
(Other voice): We TV presenters are like a family, how could you?
I'm sorry. I wish everybody a happy new year. I apologize to Director Jiang (Heping, of CCTV Sports).
I hope this won't bother the next athlete to come on stage.
Bring on the games!!
