Once again, an athlete takes a bet and once again, said athlete gets arrested. Case in point. Nathan Smith, the captain of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins hockey team was ordered to stand trial following his streaking arrest April 27th. Smith alledgely did the deed after he took a bet. According to the Associated Press, Smtih didn’t show for his preliminary hearing Monday. In his absence, a judge ruled there’s enough evidence to send the case to county court.
Smith is charged with misdemeanor counts of indecent exposure, open lewdness and disorderly conduct and a summary offense of public drunkenness, which is a minor charge.
Stupid is as stupid does, as Forrest Gump once said. Smith, who plays centre for the Penguins, a farm club of the Pittsburgh Penguins, was born in Strathcona, Alberta, Canada. His team is playing for the Calder Cup, minor league hockey's answer to the Stanley Cup. No word if either SWB or Pittsburgh will discipline Smith but I am almost sure that they will take action of some sort.
