Do You Really Care?

After the Cleveland Cavaliers' disappointing defeat against the Orlando Magic in game six, 103-90, Cavaliers forward LeBron James refused to congratulate any members
of the Magic franchise.

James finished with 25 points, but was 8-20 from the field. He had 7 assists and 7 rebounds. Not being able to perform comfortably and seeing his team lose didn't feel good for James.

"One thing about me you gotta understand: it is hard for me to congratulate somebody after just losing to him," James said. "I'm a winner; that's not being a poor sport or anything like that. If somebody beats you up, you are not going to congratulate them beating you up. That doesn't make sense to me, I'm a competitor and that is what I do. It doesn't make sense to me to go over and shake somebody's hand."

Many expected the Cavaliers to receive a victory against the Magic. Seeing Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers guard) and James go head-to-head in the NBA Finals was something everyone was dreaming of. Even LeBron.

Everyone should have known it wasn't going to be easy for Cleveland. The Magic had a successful history against the Cavaliers, and believing that Cleveland would have "crushed" the Magic was stupid.

James refused to talk with the media after his team's poor performance, which led to a 25 thousand dollar fine by the NBA. Not talking to the media after the game wasn't a good decision by James, because that's a rule and rules shouldn't be broken. Being the face of the NBA and breaking rules wouldn't look good for James. Keeping a good image should be important.

The only reason it took David Stern (NBA commissioner) so long to fine James was because he's "King" James. If it was Mark Cuban (Dallas Mavericks general manager) Stern would have fined him the next day. I guess this shows everyone the kind of person Stern happens to be. Just wondering when he'll be leaving; hopefully soon.

Seeing James walk off the court without shaking anyone's hand shouldn't be a big deal. Nobody looks forward to watching the players shake hands after the game, and nobody cared except the media. Magic's center, Dwight Howard, said he expected James to congratulate him, but he never said he was upset or disappointed. The Magic didn't care about James walking off the court, so why should everyone else care?

Do I really care, Kenrick? My answer would be: ABSOLUTELY!

I appreciate you writing this because it's a very important issue for sports figures in the future. What LeBron did (or I should say, "didn't do") was downright disrespectful to the Magic's players, coaches, and organization. I'm sorry, but the analogy about if someone beats you and you not congratulating them for beating you up is probably the stupidest thing I've heard in a while. Fights and sports contests are two very different things. If LeBron told me this face to face, I'd ask him, "Are you telling me that if Michael Jordan beat you in a 1-on-1 contest, you wouldn't (out of respect) shake his hand for a good matchup between two of the greatest basketball players to ever play the game? If not, then I've lost almost all my respect for you."

I appreciate LeBron for standing up for his beliefs and the excitement he brings in fans' hearts when playing the game, but respect is a big thing in any sports. Not shaking hands after a great series (yes, a GREAT series) is just being a soar loser. I don't care what [a] certain player/s on the opposing team did to piss you off besides win against your team fair and square, but not shaking hands, and then go as far as not going to the press conference, you deserve to be benched; however, it's the end of his season, so, that can't really be done.

It's not a big deal to me. He was upset about a game that went wrong for him. I understand where your coming from, but the Magics dont' care about that. They won the series, that's what they care about!

Of Course Kenrick, If the series went the other way, what do you think Lebron would have said if the Magic did not shake hands?

I agree with Romi,if it wasn't important then why do we always promote it with younger generations but say it is understandable when professionals do it? It must always be promoted no matter..

That's where I stand, I understand totally feeling bummed about losing, I do not enjoy it as much as the next guy. Lebron's reasoning made no sense to me. He was not "beat up" he lost fair and square, to a team that was more superior to his own.

In the End, this was blown way out of proportion, what's done is done.. but as long as you made a mistake own up to it and Lebron, in my opinion, did not.

If LeBron would have won the series, he probably wouldn't have cared either. Not a big deal, he didn't hurt anyone. Nobody felt disrespected!

Ask yourself these questions:

1.) Does he affect your life?

2.) Have you met him personally?

3.) Is he a close friend or relative of yours?

4.) Do you worship everything he does?

If you answered "No" to every one of those questions, you should have no reason to care what a basketball player says or does unless there's some heinous crime he committed.

I'm gonna save this comment for the next time Belichick does something crass. LeBron's a public figure. He acted like a brat. He didn't kill anyone, but what he did was utterly lame and shouldn't be respected.

The important thing, however, is to not characterize him based on one emotional decision. Everyone makes mistakes, even Kings.

I agree Rawb, I am disappointed not that he didn't shake hands, but on his reasoning I mean.. what does he mean? everyone else is less or more a competitor than he is? If you're a winner, then is everyone else a loser? or everyone is a winner? I care if my younger brother when, he plays little league and does not shake hands because, lebron made it alright to do so.. I am not blaming Lebron on just one thing but making an excuse in a more lamer way was just plane immature to me..

No, that isn't all that really matters. I can criticize LeBron for being a whiny brat all I want, and he deserves to get sh*t for it every time he's on the road next year.

Knute Rockne once said, "Show me a gracious loser and I'll show you a failure."

I'm not saying I agree with that sentiment completely, but what LeBron did was not without historical precedent. As someone who thinks opposing players pal around too much anyway, I don't mind seeing somebody treat the opponent as what they are -- the enemy, not somebody you can just flip a switch and be friends with again after the buzzer.

Plus, wasn't fitting that he hung Mo Williams and his teammates out to dry after they hung him out to dry all series? Handling the press after Game 6 was the first time they had pulled their weight in weeks!

I believe his reasoning was "HORRIBLE," but besides that I didn't see any problem. Athletes shouldn't rise your children, their parents should!

Kenrick, I am not saying Athlete's raise children or others, but they are role models, whether they want to be or not.. My dad taught me the game of baseball, I played with Romiezzo little League all through most of my childhood, I know it isn't the bigs but we understood why we shook hands after the game even when we lost, It doesn't mean you are a sport but you not only respect your opponents you respect the game you are playing, losing is as much a part of any game or sport, nobody likes to lose but you have to accept you are not respecting the other team in context you are respecting the game..

Mr. Thomas, I know that this may not be the case, but you sound like someone who's been paid to repeat over and over that "it's not a big deal", "it didn't matter to the Magic", "no one cares", etc. as though to protect someone or something.

You wrote: "Nobody looks forward to watching the players shake hands after the game, and nobody cared except the media."

As you can see from many of the posts here, there ARE people that cared, care and will always care. Including me and many of the people that I've talked to.

I suggest that you write what YOU believe (you are entitled) but don't speak for everyone else.

"Magic's center, Dwight Howard, said he expected James to congratulate him, but he never said he was upset or disappointed."

Just because Dwight Howard didn't SAY he was upset or disappointed, it doesn't mean that he WASN'T. I'm not saying he was, all I'm saying is neither you or I can be 100% certain. I've been upset or disappointed by other people and never said a word about it.

"The Magic didn't care about James walking off the court..."

Again, are you 100% sure no one in the Orlando Magic cared? Did you talk to each player, coach, assistant and everyone that is somehow a part of the team?

"...so why should everyone else care?"

Some of us care because we believe in ideals like honor, respect, class, virtue, and all the great character qualities that make a person chivalrous.

Now, before anyone says that I'm implying that if they don't care about LeBron walking off the court that they don't believe in all those things, I'm not implying that. What I AM saying is that to some of us, it seems like LeBron didn't demonstrate those character traits with his actions after that game.

Bottom line is some people didn't care but some people did and DO care. Everyone's entitled to their opinion and no one should tell anyone else what they should or should not care about.
