No way. I tried right away to sign up under a new user name once the original ban was in place and it wouldn't let me. No way in hell did I create a new user. No way the IP addresses match. You can't do it! Give it a try... have an admin block you and try to sign up under a new name... you can't! If you just don't won't me back then fine, but to make up a reason to ban me is another. What about this JR Lives dude, he probably has no idea what's going on and I don't want to think I'm the reason he can't post here.

Do Professional Athletes Make Too Much Money?

Tyrone Briggs Hall of Famer 36 minutes ago Score 1 Well if he is that damn unhappy at "only" making half a million, then he can quit baseball and make his living doing something else.

With this country headed towards a recession (already in?), these athletes should just shut the fack up about their contracts and keep their business affairs between themselves, agents and GMs.

After reading this I just want to make sure that these comment doesn't go to waste and that we hopefully can discuss this. I went and did a simple search and found the highest salaries for the NBA, NFL, NHL, and MLB

http://deafmusician.com/salaries-of-highest-earning-players-in-national-leagues/

Back in the day, athletes use to be happy to just be athletes and get paid for doing something that they actually enjoy. It wasn't that far of a stretch between the salary of the average "joe" to that of the average athlete "Joe". However, with television leading the parade, the market sky rocketed and billions and trillions of dollars started to pour in. Endorsements, advertising, marketing, merchandise, hell movie contracts, allow these guys to make ridiculous amounts of money. Now I'm all for making your buck because you have worked your ass off and become the elite of the elite but when does it finally become TOO MUCH? Now I probably wouldn't be writing this IF it wasn't for the fact that the economy is seriously hurting right now. People are losing their jobs left and right, people are losing their houses, health insurance, pensions, more and more people are going onto welfare, medicaid, unemployment, so on and so on. Now I don't want to get into a fight about why the economy is going into the shitter, and were other money could be used to help our own country. I don't want to go down that road. But seriously, do these guys really, really, really deserve to earn this much money? to play a game? and more importantly the guy who just lost his job is spending money on the one thing he loves the most... SPORTS, only to give away few dollars left to watch his favorite game.  I'm just guessing, but I'd assume that the average paid person in the lovely USA, spends an entire days salary if not more going to a football game. Doesn't that sound absolutely ridiculous? Same thing goes with coaches, managers, so on and so on.

Now some might argue that if they don't get the money than the owners will get it all..... again, I don't want to argue about that. But what I do know is that there are certainly a few people out there who live in total poverty that could use a hand out and could use some help.

So when is enough enough?

Let me know what you think.

Frank Stevenson.

Great lockerroom post, Doc.

When a player bitches about his contract and then types up his comments and puts them in the paper or on TV himself, you'll have a point. Otherwise, you're making (another) generalization about one singular comment chosen by the media to be disseminated for THEIR particular benefit - not the player's.

Everyone wants more money, why shouldn't they bitch about getting more of their share of a pie they help to bake?

Because someone in need is looking of a "hand out"? Puh-leeze...

Unfortunately, that is the argument. Are you saying that the athletes should give the money to homeless shelters? That's never going to happen. But many athletes do help out in their communities.

Pro sports generates big revenue and that money has to go to somebody. Why not have it go to the product?

Supply and demand is a simple concept, no?

I find it VERY unfortunate that people will "profess" to love and defend the American way (capitalism) until someone other than themself is benefitting from it.

If you don't like the fact that people are making more money than you, STFU and make more for yourself. It's not rocket science, it's relativity.

One football game, even with shitty seats, no food, no drinks is probably equal to the average american salary for 1 day. Food, and drinks = 2 days average salary. For shitty seats.

You mean why are ticket prices so high? That's because owners can still sell out the stadium at those prices. If you're saying the fans need to stop going to the games for ridiculous prices, you're absolutely right, but it's not going to happen. There are obviously still plenty of people willing to pay. But even still, tickets are only a small portion of the money the owners make.

It sounds to me like you favor communism - average ticket prices for average people. I especially like that the article is about an athlete bitching he isn't getting paid enough and you're bitching about not having enough money to afford tickets... talk out one side of the mouth and live out the other, eh?

If you can't afford to be a fan, then you should reassess your priorities.

Fact is you can argue until you're blue in the face that it isn't right, but there's no simple solution here. Try telling an owner to lower his ticket prices because middle class America can't afford tickets. He'll tell you to go watch on TV because as long as the seats are filled, he doesn't care.

No Mr. Stiles, I will not simply Shut the Fack Up because everyone here is entitled to an opinion.

The average fan (Joe Average + his family) has been priced out to attend live games. Games that used to be televised for free are now on additional fee tv packages.

Fans should not have to mortgage their savings to be a part of the pro sports experience.

I'm not sure when it became athlete's responsibility to fix the economy...

"With this country headed towards a recession (already in?), these athletes should just shut the fack up about their contracts and keep their business affairs between themselves, agents and GMs. "

Let's take your simple concept and apply it to the masses:

"With this country headed towards a recession (already in?), these [fans] should just shut the fack up about their [finances] and keep their business affairs between themselves, their [employers] and their [families]."

Hmmmm.... funny how it only works to your advantage.

I haven't gone to a Sox game in 5 years because my family can't afford it, and I certainly can't afford to go on my own, with my $7.00 an hour job. However, that doesn't make me any less of a fan. I'd love to go back for more of that experience, and if I realigned my priorites, I could, but there are more important things (college) for me to worry about now.

And, yeah, I complain about this, but there's nothing that can be done, because it's not the responsibilities of the athletes or the owners to make sure I can come to the game.

It's more basic than economics, it's logic and common sense. Maybe it's wrong, but that won't change anything.

North American professional sports have a tremendous business advantage with federal antitrust exemption laws that helps sustain this tremendous windfall to both equally the franchise owners and their employees (ie. the players).

And yes, with a slower American economy, more and more fans will be priced out of attending/watching pro sports. The first franchises to be threatened will of course be small markets.

And what happens to be a business that can no longer meet its operating budget? Goes the way of the dinosaur.

Fewer teams = fewer jobs for these athletes.

But hey, Mr. FREE AGENT really needed that extra million to get by on....

The rich just keeps getting richer and the poor just keeps getting poorer. Supply and demand will always be there because there will always be enough rich people who will continue to pay the outrageous prices to attend the games. And yes, one day ALL sports will be pay-per-view or package deals. Then the average Joe won't be watching shit but Dancin with Manny Stiles. Sooner or later the entire thing will collapse and it will be the end of sports. Happy now? Time will tell.

It's a free marketplace - Mr. "Free Agent" can sign with whomever wants him. If he thinks he can get a million more, let him... sometimes Mr. Free Agent is right and sometimes he gets bit in the ass. It's risk.

NO DIFFERENT than someone who puts their house up for sale at the wrong price... It's risk.

NO different than the guy who tries to ride a stock ALL THE WAY to the top before selling. It's risk.

AS for the assessment of a "slower American economy" - you need to stop watching the "News" - they report sensationalism, not facts. Inflation and recessions do not go hand in hand. So after years of low inflation there's a correction (or a return to "normal") and people freek out... is that news?

Interest rates have been historically low for a LONG time...

Buy the rumor (news), sell the truth. And don't believe everything you hear. IT'S AN ELECTION YEAR!! The economy is stalled waiting to see what happens next, not recessing because of true economic factors...

In fact, the economy is strong compared to historical references. If the housing market busted like this in other times, we WOULD be screwed. Even with double digit % ARMs, etc mortgage rates are STILL lower than they were between 1955 and 1995. Not just the "average, the WHOLE period.

The real estate market was overinflated and has overcorrected to the mean. So there's no new housing numbers to brag about. So there's no new production numbers to over react about.

Sensationalism, not truth.

Want TRUTH - what are the unemployment numbers??? As low as ever - THAT means people are still working - when people stop working and jobs go away not realign, then get worried...

Returning to average is not the same as regressing below mean.

And just to give you a lesson on American history - PRO SPORTS tend to be MORE successful when the economy goes sour, not the other way around... check when expansion has happened the most sometime before you assume a correlation between the two...

I remember when athletes were paid a decent salary ($65,500) for being an athlete. The better ones got a little bit more money, being a Golden Glove in their position, some money, Win the Pennant more, World Series, more, if they won the series some players even renegotiated their salaries for a few more dollars. Then if people remember "Free Agency" thanks to St. Louis Center Fielder Curt Flood. The team was looking at trading him to a team he didn't want to play for and he said "NO". Players' Salary's has gotten way way way out of hand. I understand from an owners stand point, but there is no way that 1 player should make $5, 6, 7, - 10 Million a season then others say that they have to get it while they can because once they retire they have nothing, "HA" They players have retirement savings (you better believe it) The old players didn't and they get by on a mere $50-200 because under the old system it was altogether different.

Also look at some of the players who have managed very lucrutive salaries for themselves no matter how long they play. A day, week, year 5year down the road the player gets injured and can't play anymore he still gets his salary which is appalling.

Player need to make a decent salary and be satisfied are go work a 9-5 like the most of us.
