Did the Ball Play Touchy-Feely with the Ground on David Tyree’s Catch of the Century?

So many storylines to come out of Super Bowl 42…How will the Patriots be remembered? My guess is losers, or perhaps chokers who couldn’t close the deal. Was this the greatest Super Bowl? Highly debatable. Can Archie Manning produce another Super Bowl MVP winning quarterback next season in Tampa? Yes indeed, something is in fact in Archie’s sperm! Only a select few get to swim around in Archie’s Flab-a-dab-a-ding-dong! Was that third down play when Eli made like he was a chicken, running around the Glendale field like one with his head cut off the greatest play in Super Bowl history capped off by potentially the greatest catch in Super Bowl history, (I think hands down it was…Sorry Lynn Swan) in David Tyree. Why it wasn’t just a catch that eventually lead to the Giants perfect ending in this perfect season of NFL football, (oh, scratch that…Almost perfect ending, right Pat fans) that catch will captivate into Tyree producing DVD’s for $19.99. From the Award Winning Hands Series: "How to catch one of the clutch passes in Super Bowl history with your noggin and go down in Super Bowl lore in the process"! Yes sir, it’s already in the works…It’ll be out by the NFL Draft! And just a side note on the DVD…Tom Emanski is producing it. Should be one of the best teaching videos of all-time then!

Getting back to Tyree’s acrobatics…After I saw Eli do his Michael Vick pre-inmate impression phrases such as "WTF!" followed-up by a "Holy Shit" emerged from my cake hole. Upon DT catching the damn ball, (Keyshawn, eat your heart out) those phrases once again emerged from the cake hole…Only this time with a fall off of my seat rendition thrown in. I’m sure I wasn’t alone! Although immediately after coming back to my senses, (and believe me, it was difficult) upon seeing the replay, one thing went through my mind…Did the ball touch the ground? And here we are 48 hours later and still nobody has brought this question to the table…Until now. Leave it to yours truly!

By now we’ve seen the replays countless times, although what leads me to raise this question was the reverse angle of the catch...It seems like it actually may have hit the ground.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not raining on Ty’s parade or anything…I was glad the booth didn’t decide to challenge the play and surprised at the same time, although I’m betting I wasn’t the only boob tube watcher waiting for the catch phrase, "The play is being reviewed." I might be way off on this one, but this is just a guess here…Somehow, somewhere in the NFL Rules I’m doubting it to say "pinning the ball against ones helmet while tumbling to the turf constitutes as control of the football regardless of any portion of the ball may come into contact with the ground." And last time I checked, it wasn’t some meaningless preseason game! To think the replay booth taser refs throughout the season for what seemingly seems like an obvious call, just to double check…So then why not double check this one? Isn’t that the whole idea of instant replay? Hmm..?

Damn, if you didn’t know any better you might think I’m a New England fan. Nope! Sorry, wrong answer! Surely though this is one of the many cries within Pats Nation along with "Eli was in the grasp!" Sure he was…And Bill Belichick isn’t a complete asshole either, he’s just misunderstood! I just found it shocking that this unbelievable play didn’t get a deep cavity search from upstairs given what was at stake…Perhaps either Bill Buckner, Bucky Dent, Aaron Boone, Don Shula, or Tony Soprano were in the replay booth at that time? No wait, I got it…Jimmy Hoffa was there! What’s more surprising is that more peeps haven’t raised this same question. Well, except for Patriot fans, but it’s hard to take them serious nowadays…Since they’re doing a whole lot of this, (click the link and hit the play button…You’ll be glad you did)!

Oh well, such is life! Good news is I’m a fan of the team that’s playing the Patriots…So none of the effects me! I guess Super Bowl 42 just enhanced what we already knew about CHEATERS…THEY NEVER WIN!!!

Oh shit, I almost forgot…Upon further review, the play still stands as called! The New England Patriots will go down in history as one of the biggest sports failures of all time! Although look on the bright side…And yes, there is one! They still made history on Sunday…Rewriting the history books as they created a sequel to the Boston Massacre! How awesome is that!?!?

INSERT KNIFE AND TWIST SOME MORE…

David beat Goliath. And David was a Giant!!!

100% a catch.

If you want to argue that Eli was "in the grasp", you have a better argument - and he wasn't in the grasp.

Earlier this year, as I was wondering whatever happened to the "In the Grasp" rule, I had to explain it to my son. 14 years old and he had never seen it called.

If it did hit the ground I have to believe the red flag would have come out.The Giants called time-out right after the catch giving the Patriot coaches [in the booth] time to look at it from every angle. It was a great play by both players.

I have seen this play at least a hundred times now and the first time I saw it I thought it may have touched the ground. I then realized that it never did and even if it had it would have been a catch because he had full possession so it doesn't matter if the ball touches the ground.
