Did that Really Just Happen?

As seen on 3rdstringsafety.blogspot.com

From the Rick DiPietro school of sports management comes the Arizona Diamondbacks signing outfielder Chris B. Young to a six year extension, according to Rotoworld and several other sources.

Listen, I think Young is going to be a fantastic player. His on base percentage may never be great, but he certainly has the potential to be a 30-30 guy and play a great centerfield.

However, Has he proved anything? I mean, literally anything?

Here are last year's stats: .295 OBP, 32 HR, 68 RBI, 27 SB.

For those of you forget, my favorite stat is RC/27, or in layman's terms, Runs created per every 27 outs a hitter makes. It basically combines everything positive that a hitter can do, and subtracts everything negative. Here's the Formula:

[1] Then, divide it all by 27. Not as complicated as it looks, trust me.

Anyway, last season young created only 4.9 runs per 27 outs. Not great. By comparison, the Hebrew Hammer Ryan Braun created 8.4 runs per 27 outs. Where's his huge extension?

The point is that Young is a good player, but I think the D-Backs jumped the gun just a little bit.

why pay ryan brawn right away he is still in arbitration and the brewers arent big spenders for example carlos lee let him go for nothing even tho he is a franchise player and brawn has said already he wants to test the market unless he gets a offer he cant refuse they are just paying because they can and hqve the money and want to give one of their best players security

There's more than money and calculations to signing a player long term. It sends a message to the other youngsters on the team that the franchise will commit long term to them.

Besides, there's always a trade to be made if he doesn't pan out or someone comes along that might be better...

You "fantasy" guys would be better served with understanding "real" baseball a bit before applying "fantasy" logic to "real" life...

I also think it shows a clear cut commitment to the fans as well as the players

Oh, Manny, Manny, Manny. Regarding to us as Fantasy shines poorly on you. I'm hardly a fantasy guy, but i do beleive that a player needs to prove himself before he gets paid. While I understand your point, I think it's irrelvant because of arbitration and free agency. Young is still going to try to get more money when he can. Second of all, Why pay a guy assuming that he is going to develop? That's stupid, real or fantasy.

The D-Backs have always been kind of a weird squad with contracts and personnel. I think now their just trying to shore up all their young players, which is everybody, and have multiple faces for the franchise since there is no Gonzo, Schill, or a respectable Big Unit. Could be a good move, who knows, but I think a six year deal for anybody is crazy.

The Dbacks have had a strange history with finances. Their first administration "bought" a World Series championship, and tied up millions in deferred payments. Their new ownership group has tried for a couple years to preach financial responsibility, (they let Valverde go rather than go to arbitration), yet they do this? I don't get it either. And, down the road, it's going to cause more problems, because when Brandon Webb and Stephen Drew and Conor Jackson and Justin Upton start demanding new contracts, the shit's really going to hit the fan.
