Detroit Pistons Set The Record Straight

It was headlined as a ‘Battle of Titans’, the potential representatives to the NBA Finals. The Detroit Pistons would clash against the Phoenix Suns. Each had made their moves prior to the trade deadline, perhaps finding the final piece to the puzzle. This Sunday afternoon showdown would shed a little light on how close they really were.

There were blockbuster moves at the deadline but the Phoenix Suns and the Detroit Pistons would make three-player and two-player deals with the Miami Heat and the Toronto Raptors, respectively.

Many would question the acquisition of an aging Shaquille O'Neal but Phoenix brass would echo sentiments regarding his potential to take them to an NBA title. O’Neal had won championships with two of the three teams he had previously played on. Four titles in all and Phoenix was hoping for at least one more.

Joe Dumars, general manager of the Pistons would acquire Juan Dixon, a five-year veteran with mixed reviews but a resume of great potential. After all he has an NCAA Championship ring with the University of Maryland.

Surprisingly the game wasn’t close. It would be a one-sided affair from the beginning.

Both teams were playing their fourth game in the last ten days following a day off. It was the third game O’Neal would play with his new teammates. It was sure to reveal signs of the Suns transition. Maybe a glimpse of how they were going to be down the road. But there was nothing. The team had no pulse.

The Pistons would take the lead on crisp play by their starting five. Whether it was Rasheed Wallace posting up, Richard Hamilton pulling up for jumpers or Chauncey Billups distributing the ball to his teammates, everything was working. The Pistons’ defense was stifling and the team rolled.

The Pistons would steadily increase their lead allowing the bench players extended time on the floor. This was becoming a habit for the Pistons. Their bench was growing and learning how to contribute.

With regards to the outcome, it was sealed when the Pistons took a 59-41 lead into halftime. The second half would lead to much of the same play resulting in a 116-86 win.

What was the reason for this result? Both teams had equal records. Some would say that since the Western Conference is the stronger of the two conferences that in many cases they were the elite teams when compared to the Eastern conference. The Suns had changed personnel but they were still an accomplished team. Something was obviously off.

The Pistons were playing championship basketball. Six players scored double-digit points. They have all the pieces to succeed. They play as a unit and their bench players are getting better every game. They have developed a balanced attack.

The Suns were starting over. They were a high flying team before Shaq. They scored at will and won a lot of games that way. Now they are trying to be a hybrid offense. Part half-court and part high paced offense. Steve Nash is good, a league MVP, but is he good enough to make the changes necessary to win. Amare Stoudemire is now free to play his true position at power forward. He had a good game, scoring 31 points. The other players seemed lost most of the time. Unsure of themselves, they scrambled to make plays when they could.

As for the new arrivals, Shaquille O’Neal scored 7 points in 33 minutes and Juan Dixon was scoreless in 2 minutes of playing time.

Two teams with bright futures are seemingly headed in opposite directions. The Pistons are second in the Eastern Conference and the Suns are fifth in the West and falling fast. Only time will tell if they have the right stuff to meet again in the NBA Finals.

I thought it was 116-86 Pistons. Looks like the Suns got Shaq, but forgot to play defense 2 of the last 3 games.

Want me to simplify today's game? Many of the Suns simply partied too hard last night - how do I know this? I cannot divulge - but rest assured, they won't be partying in April or May but will resume the partying sometime around... say middle of June?

Hey Manny, it the Pistons aren't making the Finals, and the Celtics aren't making the finals, who is? The Magic? I'm just asking...

Does it really matter? Whoever it is will get beaten badly.

I'll take the Magic or the Cavs on one simple premise - Doc Rivers AND Flip Saunders will never coach a team into the Finals.

Here's a wild thought... Why not the Raptors? I mean... the Hawks might even win the freekin' East at this rate!!!

Do you think Francona managed his team to the World Series when they beat the Yankees in 4 straight? No, the players did it on their own.

I honestly think that in some cases, when a chance to face a team in the NBA finals is up in the air, I think it's anyone's game. It could be from the Celtics to the Cavs to the Raptors. You never know what will happen in the NBA.

  • Funny how I was thinking about the Raptors right before you posted your comment. ;)

Romi - I'm gonna tell you something I said when the Phillies hired Francona...

"This guy will win a World Series someday, maybe not with the Phillies, but he will win a World Series"

You know why I said that?

He motivated Michael Jordan.

Francona was Jordan's manager at Birmingham when he was trying to play baseball and MJ gushed about Francona's attitude and motivational skills.

If MJ calls you "a motivator" - you're a top notch facking motivator!

I truly believe that coming from a 3-0 deficit in any situation starts at the top and trickles down.

No matter how much YOU think you're gonna win, if the guy calling the shots (baseball really is a one-on-one game between two managers) doesn't believe you can win, you're waxed toast!!!

Afterall, wasn't Tito the difference between Grady Little and winning? Wasn't Tito the guy that put Dave Roberts in the game and give him the green light?

Rethink what you said - if Francona gives up, HOW can the team win???

I had no idea Terry Francona was Michael Jordan's manager. WOW!

What I meant to say was that Terry Francona didn't really manage the team well in order to win those 4 games. Remember the Pedro incident in game 7 with Little? Well, Francona did the same thing. This, however didn't effect the game at all, as the Red Sox won the game.

I remember Francona making a lot of "mistakes", so to speak as a matter of fact. Luck was definitely involved in those 4 wins, which was why it was so memorable.

Francona busted his finger playing MJ in a game of one on one after a practice. The day I heard that, I said "Francona is gonna be a big league manager someday"

The way he handled the whole MJ situation was telling.

Francona was highly touted coming out of college yet was a career pinerider/pinch hitter who sat next to his managers and listened to every word they said. His Dad, Tito was a MLBer too, ya know - that's where he got his nickname... Dude was born to teach - afterall - those who can, DO. Those who don't, teach!!!

That is SO true. I can't hit worth shit, dude. But I know how to teach really well.

There is a player who I personally coach (well, I'm an assistant coach). I couldn't hit anything even if you bribed him. Thanks to my batting technique and tips on batting, he got 7 RBI's that day against the team who was in first place, including a grand slam.

After that grand slam, I told the coach (who happens to be a good friend of mine; 24 year old),

"Now, I can't hit worth shit, but I sure can teach people."

I felt so proud of myself. ;)

When you play the major teams in each conference you rise to the occasion. You try to make a lasting impression. Not excuses.

February has nothing to do with it. When the Pistons played the Spurs and Mavericks in January, they showed up to play.

When ABC has a 2:00P.M. (EST) game on Sunday they are saying this should bring some intensity. This is our "Showcase" to compete with the other networks.

The Suns don't play for NBC.

Let's face it: the Suns are adjusting and everyone is coming at them full force. Good. Like I said - FEBRUARY. Shaq has played three games in his entire life where he didn't run to the blocks down low - the past 3 games with the Suns.

He will adjust to the pick and roll/penetrate and kick out style the Suns play soon enough. Shaq is fine.

If you want to dissect the game honestly - check how Grant Hill played today - ZERO points, ZERO assists, 3 boards - think THAT's gonna happen much??? Check how Nash only had 6 assists or Amare only had 3 rebounds. The Suns don't shoot 41% for whole games very often. In fact, RARELY! The Suns are the best shooting team in the league!!! They DON'T have games like this!!! It's an anomaly, not a baseline!

Do you think the Pistons are gonna shoot 51% again this season??? Maybe a couple more times at best...

Barbosa was the only guy that really came to play today.

If you think the Suns are going to have a game like this again, or if the Pistons had ANYTHING to do with that, you're a fool. Sorry to call you names, but it's really that obvious... as far as "balanced attack" and guys scoring in double figures goes... WHAT do you think's gonna happen in a game that was - in your very own words - "sealed" by halftime???

There's more going on here than simply the Pistons "outplaying" the Suns. The Suns came out like garbage got frustrated and gave up. The final score is irrelevant - it was a bad practice to the Suns and a illusory moral victory to the Pistons.

Teams have games like these during the season: I'll take 'em in February, thank you very much!!! The Pistons can save their's for the Cavs in the playoffs (snicker, snicker)

And can we stop this "Potential Finals Matchup" stuff everytime a West team and East team meet? They're ALL "potential" Finals matchups!!!

Afterall, the Suns just mopped the floor with another "potential Finals matchup" team in the Celtics on Friday night... woo...

(Yes, a NIGHT game - just like the Finals will be - Night games, not Sunday afternoon games)

When looking at the stats, it seemed like the Suns shouldn't have lost the game by THAT much. A 30 point win over the Suns is big no matter how you look at it. It really boosts a team's confidence. With the Pistons losing to Milwaukee a few days ago, they needed to get settled in where they're supposed to be. Phoenix only had 2 more turnovers than Detroit, but they sucked from the free throw line (18-29) (probably because Shaq shot half of them), and the Pistons were just unstoppable from the arc (9-18). Also, Detroit was able to outrebound them by 16.

On a side note, 'Sheed was did pretty well today. 22 points in 26 minutes, along with 8 rebounds.

Good game for the Suns, and a tough break for the Suns.

The game was essentially over in the 2nd quarter. The stats were merely Oscar-worthy makeup on a hairy tranny. LINTON JOHNSON played 12 minutes for the Suns today. I never even heard of him until today!!! He signed a 10-day contract over the weekend.

I forgot to mention to mention the Suns' tough week. A few days ago, they battled against the Lakers in a tough loss, and then they face the Celtics, and well... you know what happened.

And it's pretty rare you see Amare get only 3 rebounds in an entire game he played 35 minutes in.

Mike D'Antoni even said something about the fact that they had to play at noon.

"Maybe we used all the adrenaline left these last two games." Emotionally, we've been on a high for the last three days and you wake up on Sunday at noon and we're not quite ready to play."

I cannot stress this enough to you young bucks....

STATS do not tell you the whole story of a game. The games aren't played on calculators!

Momentum, energy and flow are not calculable. Stats are just numbers - the only value they have is the value you assume upon them.

A team can give up 30 rebounds on one possession. A team can have 30 steals yield zero points. A team can shoot 80% for the game and lose!

There's only ONE stat that truly matters - final score.

The Suns got beat - plain and simple.

Does that mean the Pistons are a better team than the Suns? Only for today, friends, only for today...

I said it above - The Suns partied too hard last night - Shaq's first Saturday night in the Valley.

He had quotes about "Phoenix is a laid back town" and how he went too bed too early and may have had too much rest - he's bullshitting. Phoenix, specifically Scottsdale is a high-end party town. They got too fucked up last night. I knew it before the game even started.

I saw the Heat beat the piss out of the Suns in December (yes, the Heat) the night after Shaq's famous Christmas bash in Scottsdale, and I like I said above, I know they partied last night...

Don't discount the fact that Shaq is fresh off a divorce and chillin' in smokin' hot babe central - Scottsdale, Az!!!

It's hard to roll through S-Dale on a Sat. night with more than 30 bucks in your pocket and NOT party your ass off - just ask Mike Tyson!!

I know this Manny, don't worry. One of my teachers and I talk about this a lot. You guys think that the only thing we like to talk about is stats. That may be true for some people, but the only reason why I'm judging the players based on stats is because I didn't see the game in order to judge Amare any differently. If I watched the game, I'd tell you every little detail, and I'd probably have evidence, since I record just about every game I see on TV. You are definitely right: the only thing that matters is the outcome of the game, but I had no other option than "just stats" in order to talk about how the Suns got beat.

Shaq bullshitting? Tell me something new... And I remember watching the highlights of the game. It wasn't pretty. The truth of the matter is: teams win AND lose... or lose AND win depending on what key of emphasis you're explaining. Upsets will happen, and blowouts when two decent teams face each other will happen. That's the nature of the sport.

Well, stats are a residue of the story, not the story itself. Like a word count tells you how many words are in an article but it doesn't tell you the gist of the story, ya know?

Want some stats that explain a little??? Grant Hill scored ZERO points, Boris Diaw had 2 pts - hell, the Suns 4 starters minus Amare scored 26 points combined - PUTRID! - all you need to see on the stat sheet. The Suns won't beat a pickup team at the Scottsdale Y like that...

I watched, well... tried to watch the whole game - I saw about 40-42 minutes of it except for food and beverage consumption/holding my food and beverage down.

The Suns do this every so often. They make runs and give up runs but when the shots don't go down, they pack it in and call it a day; come back out and get 'em next game.

D'Antoni wasn't upset, so I'm not either.

The Suns - for as long as I've been a fan - have SUCKED on early day games - S - U - C - K - E - D.

It's the scourge of West Coast teams. East teams coming West for early afternoon games have a distinct advantage. It's always easier to travel with the time zones than against them.

And like I stated, it doesn't happen in the playoffs!@!!!

Every team goes through a slump. D'Antoni did understand what was going on and gave a good reason as to why they lost by such a large number. The Suns go through crap like this, the Spurs do this (losing to the Sonics; weren't doing so well in the month of January), and even the Celtics (the so called "perfect" team lost 3 straight games before tonight's, or last night's game I should say). And you're absolutely right, it doesn't happen in the playoffs. Players aren't tired, and they're at their best, usually.
