There are some things about sports I don't like... the New Yuck Muts, the University of Michigan and those ASSCRACK UGLY HELMETS, the Floridamn Gayturds and the Miami Crimicanes. I also think that NASCRAP and professional wrestling are a HUGE waste of air time on television and would rather watch women's Jello wrestling!

Cubs getting tough with rooftop owners that don't pay

Remember a while back I talked about a gentleman named Tom Gramatis that has a bleacher set up in Wrigleyville? He owed the Cubs a huge chunk of change. Now the defending National League Central champs are getting tough with those that haven't paid up. In other words, the Cubs want these folks to "show them the money!" They're not just singling out Gramatis, they're hitting everyone that has a rooftop bleacher setup in the area. April 15th is the deadline. Kind of ironic, you think? That's when the Cubs return home to play George Kenneth Griffey, Jr. and the Cincinnati Reds.

When you stop and think about it, 17 percent is not a hell of a lot of money. That's the cut that the Cubs want from the owners of these rooftop set ups near the classic ballpark. I actually got to see one of these setups up close in March 2004 (granted, a bad time to visit Chicago but what the hell?) and was impressed. It's only fair. Show them the money and make peace, guys. You'll be better off for it. At least you won't have Tony Soprano and Big Pussy at your front door wanting to whack you. Show some good faith, show some common sense.

Show the Cubs the money.

I don't know how I feel about this. It's private property and they just so happen to have a good view. Seems to me there is nothing the Cubs can do.

There's a lot they can do. They can block their view of the field resulting in a 100% revenue loss instead of just the 17 the Cubs are "asking" for.

If I was a property owner, I would call their bluff on them blocking the view.

Why? They blocked them before and all the rooftop owners bitched and moaned.

This was the deal they accepted to not face a blocked view. I don't see how they have a right to complain now.

As a fan do I think it is fair in general? No, these guys are capitalizing on great real estate. But you make the bed, you sleep in it.

there is precedence, thought i'm not sure about the private property thing: Why do you think they built the green monster in fenway (hint: it wasn't because they were hitting too many home runs)

If I am correct re the Green Monster, it was built to protect shops from having their windows broken.

Can't the property owners charge $30 for anything such as a T-shirt and Oh, by the way you can see Wrigley field from here.

The Cubs should be more concerned about defeating the Blue Jays in this season's World Series than a couple of drunk dudes sitting on top of a roof.

Isn't it time to level that hunk of crap and build a downtown stadium?

Tearing down Wrigley would be like tearing down the Vatican. I think Wrigley is on the Historical Register, which means that no wrecking ball can ever touch it. Plus, where in Chicago would they put the new ballpark, if it ever came to that?

@ Cougar (and only Cougar): I share your sentiments over Wrigley but the sad reality is that if something is not done, the ballpark will self-destruct itself anyways. When nets are placed under barriers to protect people against falling, crumbling concrete....

Wrigley and the Vatican? This is a comparison I would not have expected to see.

How will the Cubs block their view? Will they make the fence higher and will it obstruct those buildings where they are paying?

It would probably be higher, Niteowl. I'm sure they will exempt those that did pony up. That's a good question.

The Cubs should be grateful they have any fans left. When is "Goat Day" ?
