College Bowl Wrap-up (12-27-08)

Two of the day's three big bowl games have played out with thrilling results.  West Virginia University's senior QB, Pat White, became the first-ever to win four bowl games as the starting QB after lifting his Mountaineers to an exciting 31-30 victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.  White threw for 332 yards and 3 TD's, ending his college career on a high note.  The Moutaineers finished the season with a 9-4 record while dropping the 'Heels to an overall record of 8-5.

Sophomore RB Noel Devine added 61 yards on the ground and an 18-yard first quarter TD run.  West Virginia--and College Football, as well--will indeed miss Pat White, dearly, but will get the chance of watching the elusive Devine for at least one more season.

Like the Moutaineers, the Florida State Seminoles finished their 2008 campaign on a high-note.  Florida State, 9-4, defeated the struggling Wisconsin Badgers (7-6) 42-13, earlier today as well.  Badger RB, senior P.J. Hill, ran for 140 yards, but Wisconsin's three lost fumbles came back to haunt them as FSU rolled on to a 28-0 run in the third and fourth quarter.

Florida State's sophomore QB Christian Ponder's 2 TD passes and mistake-free play made up for Wisconsin's 201 yards on the ground, giving FSU the Florida Citrus Bowl game trophy and the thrill of victory.

Looking for even more Bowl action??  May want to check out the Emerald Bowl (Miami FL. v.s. California) on ESPN.  Currently, the Golden Bears from California are ahead of the 'Canes, 17-14, with the fourth quarter begining.  California's two TD's are credited to sophomore RB Jahvid Best.  Best has accumulated 167 yards and two TD's on the ground through the first 3 QTR's of play.

• Miami ties the game up at 17 with a short, 22-yard FG kicked by Matt Bosher. This young Miami team has done a nice job keeping up with the Golden Bears. Freshman QB Jacory Harris is playing like a senior out there as he finishes off that 12-play, 74 yard scoring drive, which took over five minutes to complete.

• Harris: 22 for 35, 181 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT

• Game tied 17-17 with nine minutes remaining in the game. California currently has the ball.

• California's defensive pressure finally gets to the freshman, forcing Harris fumble deep into Miami territory.

• California's RB Jahvid Best trots back out onto the field as the Golden Bears get the ball at the Miami two-yard line.

• The officials review the fumble, but the call on the field is confirmed by the referee...California football.

• California QB, Nate Longshore, throws his first TD of the game to freshman TE Anthony Miller. The TD and the Tavecchio extra point gives the Golden Bears the 24-17 advantage.

• The pressure is, without a doubt, on freshman QB Jacory Harris now. Just 2:41 remains in the game.

• Miami faces a 4th and 1, but converts a short pass to the TE for the first down. Time is ticking for Miami. A big play is needed, quick!

• Harris does a horrible job managing the clock. He will learn many, many lessons from this game. Now, just 12 seconds remain after Harris throws the ball away towards the Miami bench.

• Third and 5 for Miami after the TO and the Harris pass is incomplete. More struggles for Harris and he has just 5 seconds to get the ball 50 yards.

• Harris sees more pressure and has to dump the ball off to sophomore RB Graig Cooper, who gains 14. BUT, time runs out and the Golden Bears win the Emerald Bowl, 24-17.

California joins WVU and FSU as Bowl winners today, finishing the season the right way...with a win. The Golden Bears complete their season with a 9-4 season as Miami drops to 7-6.
