Closer Effects on Team ERA & WHIP, Todd Jones…

Before drafting fantasy baseball closers, see what they can do to your team's bottom line ERA and WHIP.
Since closers only account for a fraction of fantasy team innings relative to starters, I thought we’d take a look at some of the effects their innings have on a fantasy owner’s total pitching bottom line. Everything below is based on 2007 stats. Since all of the chosen closers were healthy and pitched a similar amount of innings last season I've decided to apply the same 66.0 inning total to each of them. That is the average number of innings pitched among the 6 closers chosen (71.2, 64.1, 58.1, 65.2, 61.1, 75.0 = 66.0). This draws the fairest comparison. I've contrasted two very different sets of closers then applied them to the same group of starters to highlight extremes.
Just below resembles what a very nice fantasy starting staff would look like as a stand alone item. You have your ace, an excellent #2 and 3 guy, and even a decent bottom two. This staff combined would have put forth an overall 3.59 ERA along side a 1.25 WHIP. Good enough to win each category depending on league set up.
What are those closers doing to your bottom line?
