As the late Robert Goulet once said, "For one, brief shining moment, it was Camelot." The magical run of the Georgia Bulldogs ended in our nation's capital Thursday afternoon at the hands of Xavier 73-61 in the opening round of the 2008 NCAA Championship West Regional.
Georgia, who pulled off the miracle of miracles last weekend by winning three games in two days, held a 9-point lead at the break before the Musketeers finally caught up to their SEC foes and never gave up the lead afterward. A 22-6 run sealed Georgia's fate. Josh Duncan led all scorers with 20 points, while teammate Derrick Brown had a double-double with 19 points and 11 boards.
The Dogs, finishing the year at 17-17 after their late-season run, was paced by Terrance Woodbury with 13. Senior Sundiata Ganes had 13.
Musketeer point guard Drew Lavender put it best at the post game press conference: “Fatigue finally caught them (Georgia).”
The clock has struck midnight for the Georgia Bulldogs. At least they got to go to the ball.
