Chasing Cubtober: Angel Pa-GONE!

The Chicago Cubs opened up another roster spot on Saturday by trading outfielder Angel Pagan to the New York Mets for two minor leaguers.

Pagan was originally acquired from the Mets before the 2006 season and hit .255 with nine home runs and 38 RBIs in his 148 games with the Cubs.

Pagan, a switch-hitter, was primarily used as the Cubs fourth outfielder because of his ability to play all three outfield spots while also being the Cubs best speed option off the bench.

The minor leaguers acquired by the Cubs from the Mets were reliever Ryan Meyers and outfielder Corey Coles.

Meyers is a 6-foot-5-inch 22-year-old right handed pitcher who struck out 55 batters in 51 2/3 innings while converting 13 saves and posting a 2.14 ERA while spending most of the year at Class A Savannah.

After seeing how manager Lou Piniella called up minor leaguers seemingly with no regard, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Meyers get a cup of coffee with the big club.

Coles is a left-handed hitting outfielder was a fifth-round draft pick in 2003 and an All-Star at Class A in 2006.  Coles spent most of 2007 in Double A where he hit .296.

Coles could turn out to be a better version of Pagan.  Rotowire.com says that Coles is a “prototypical leadoff hitter, who uses his speed to put pressure on the defense.”  He posted a .407 on-base percentage in 2006, partially due to the 48 walks he drew.

The Cubs starting outfield looks to be set with Alfonso Soriano in left field, Kosuke Fukudome in right field and (despite his winter ball struggles) Felix Pie in center field.  The Cubs also have Matt Murton and Sam Fuld in the fold coming off the bench, so Pagan was the odd man out.

Pie is not a given in center. The Cubs will give Tyler Colvin every opportunity to win the job in the spring.

Agreed. Pie is a very good defensive outfielder and he's fast--so he's got something going for him. You could theoretically hide him in the 8th spot if the Cubs had a 1-7 line-up like the Yankees, Red Sox or Tigers...but they don't. I'm surprised to hear Colvin's name brought up, I've been hearing that Sam Fuld would be Pie's main competition in center. But Colvin's put up some solid numbers and he's the left-handed hitting, high on-base percentage guy the Cubs were targeting all off-season. He was already in our system!

Despite winning Arizona Fall League MVP honors, the Cubs do not consider Fuld to be a legitimate ML prospect. If he makes the team it will be as a reward for his MVP or he's out of options, or even wins a job in the spring. As of now he's on the 40 man roster but has no guarantee of a ML job.

Wow, the Mets are certainly piling on the 4th outfielders. Endy Chavez, Ryan Church, Carlos Gomez (he's not developed enough to be a full-time starter), Marlon Anderson, and now Pagan. That's a lot of (mediocre) options.

Carlos Gomez is a fackin' stud. He's faster than Jose Reyes, how's that for starters?

I know he's fast. He might be the fastest player in the majors. I love him, but he's only 22, and his bat hasn't caught up to his legs yet. When it does, watch out.

Doesn't much matter, though, does it? He is your starting rightfielder next year. And Willie loves the kid, his personality and character are just as good as his on-field skills. Rookie of the Year.

Gomez may start in AAA. Anderson is more a bat-off-the-bench than a 4th OF. Church is a legit starter. So Endy is your #4, with Castro, Easley, and Gotay (?) filling out the bench with Anderson.

Well, at least they're getting rid of all those pesky minor league prospects.

Moises Alou, Marlon Anderson, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Gomez, Endy Chavez, Ryan Church, Angel Pagan.

As of now, these are the outfielders on the Mets roster. Anderson is essentially an infielder, so cross him off. Pagan couldn't make the Cubs, so cross him off. Church is the only one of the group who can play all outfield positions, so cross him off. Chavez can't hit his weight, so cross him off. So that leaves the starters Alou, Beltran and Gomez.

Church may end up with as many starts as Beltran and Alou, but with Alou's injury problems most of them will be in left.

If the Mets didn't believe in Gomez, they never would have traded Milledge, baggage or not.
