The Boston College men’s Ice Hockey team is going to the Frozen Four for the third time in three years. The question now is can the Eagles capture their first national title since 2001?
In the last two years they have gotten to the title game and watched it slip away. In 2006 the eagles went to the final after dispatching Miami 5-0 and their rival Boston University 5-0 in the regional final. In the Frozen four the Eagles took down North Dakota 6-5 and then let the National Championship slip away when Wisconsin scored in the final minute of the game to win the title.
In 2007 the Eagles came back experienced and knew what they had to do. They eliminated St. Lawrence 4-1 and then took down Miami for the second straight year, this time winning 4-0. In the Championship they play the Michigan State Spartans who had eliminated Boston University earlier in the tournament. The Spartans then took down another Boston team when they beat the Eagles 3-1 in the Championship.
This year the Eagles are really experienced and are tired of watching their opponents celebrate on the other end of the ice. They took down Minnesota in the first round and then dispatched Miami for a third straight year, this time in the Regional finals on an overtime goal by freshman Joe Whitney to complete a comeback and win the game 4-3.
The Eagles will play North Dakota in the Final Four for the right to play in the National Championship against the winner of Michigan and Notre Dame.
With gas prices so high we will have to see if the Eagles have enough to win the title or if they run out at the very end such as they did in the past two years.
The Semi-Finals are on April 10th and the Championship is on April 12th.
