AGM Linebacker and I will bring the pain.

I'm a sports fanatic. I hail from Nelson County Virginia, and thats where I learned to be a Virginia Cavalier fan. I also learned to be a Dallas Cowboys fan because I hated how good the Redskins were doing. I've played sports at almost every level with the exception of being a fulltime professional, as a result I have a great perception on the sporting world. I love to talk sports and I've never been shy to share my opinion with someone.

C.C. Sabathia Signs with the New York Yankees

According to sources from the New York Post, free agent pitcher C.C. Sabathia has agreed to a deal that will send him to the New York Yankees. It is reported the contract he will receive will be the highest paid deal ever given to a pitcher. The numbers are estimated at six years and worth over $140 million. It is expected that the official announcement of this deal will come later today. I guess all that talk about wanting to play in the NL and wanting to be on the West Coast was just talk. Apparently, money can buy happiness for C.C. Sabathia.

I think this is a dumb signing. C.C. will end up breaking down. He will end up just like Zito and Colon. He may have 1 maybe 2 good years. Im glad the sox didnt make an attempt to get him.

Or he could win 125 games for New York in 6 seasons.

The Yankees are not done spending.

I'm not surprised. I knew that if anyone was going to sign Sabathia, it would be the Yankees. Many people will probably say that it was because the Yankees offered him the best deal, and although that was certainly a big part of it, you also have to take into account that he was needed in New York the most. I know there was a lot of talk with the Angels, Dodgers, and Giants (who weren't really offering him much from what I saw), but the Yankees' only chink in the chain these past couple of years has been their starting pitching; why do you think Joba Chamberlain became a starter? Now that they have Sabathia, the Yankees have secured a great spot in the rotation in replace for Mike Mussina. And since Chien-Ming Wang is back, their pitching is going to be a LOT better than it was last year; that is if everyone can keep healthy...

Throughout following him this offseason and reading the stories on him, it does not sound like CC wants to be a Yankee. WHo knows maybe he does and was just waiting for the right amount of money. I think he signed to early, if he waited he may have been able to go to a place that he wanted to go to, like on the west coast and in the NL.

I dont know, this deal still does not make sense to me though. I can see why an NL may not want him, he is a big guy and I would not want to send him out there and worry about him swinging wrong or sliding wrong and hurting a knee or his back. And then a 160 mill goes out the door.

The Yankees will be able to keep him in better shape and he will be less injury prone.

Agreed. I think he signed too early. Maybe that would've given other teams time to think of an offer to give CC that would make him happier. But if he signed that quickly, in my opinion, that could mean one of two things: 1) he really wants to be a Yankee, or 2) what he said about playing on the west coast closer to home was just a lie and he cares about the money and gave up on the west coast... If he decided to sign quicker than I thought with the Yankees, I'm assumed that he [at least] doesn't mind being a Yankee. We'll see what happens when he the 2009 season starts...

I believe CC would have taken less to go to the west coast...but 30 or 40 million less (and an chance to opt out after 3 years)? I don't think so the Yankees blew him away, plain and simple

Every team, except the Yankees might show reluctance to blow money on big ticket free agents because of the uncertain economic climate. At the very least, they'll want shorter term contracts. Just look at the deal K-Rod got.

Eh, I wouldn't pin that point on the K-Rod deal. You might be partially right, but there are also concerned about K-Rod's arm, velocity and ability to close games in september Sure Brad Lidge only had 41 saves to K-Rods 62, but how many of K-Rods saves were 1 run deals and how many did he end up blowing?

So instead of seeing CC on the west coast with the bat in LA where he belongs, Mr. Moneybags corrupts another and puts him in pinstripes. Ugh, how I hate the Yankees.

Should've signed Johan last season. Or...Peavy seems to want out of San Diego. I'm sure he would've been more than happy to go to New York...I mean, think about it, he was willing to leave for Chicago. He obviously just wants out of San Diego (haha).

But the Twins wanted too much for Santana, at least when they were talking with the Sox and Yankees.

Just another example of the Yanks signing a high priced shiny trinket in the hopes of becoming an also-ran. It's time to admit that the decisions this team has made since 2000 (culminating with the firing of Joe Torre) have irreperably damaged this team.

Giambi and A-Rod have yet to win a World Series. Pavano and Brown stole money. As a Yankee hater, I love every minute of this, but it's sad to see the richest team in MLB look so bad with their player personnel.

Not with the same success. Jeter, Williams, Rivera, Posada and Pettite worked out. Then there's non home grown players like Clemens, O'Neil, Knoblauch, Tino Martinez, Mariano Duncan, Scott Brosius, David Cone. Looks about even to me.

The comment was more based on the Yankees seeking the shiny free agent. I don't think you can deny that the Yanks stick their wallet out every time there is a big name out there. And they usually get their man, regardless of whether or not he's a good fit or can actually help the team.

Remember Randy Johnson? That didn't work out so well. The Yanks teams that won had team players who maybe were not as good individually as Giambi, Johnson, Sabathia, et al...but they were able to function in the team structure and complement each other. The 1996-2000 Yankees were a team. The new Yankees are a collection of old school Yanks (some from the WS teams) and newly acquired 'player of the day' types.

It seems reasonable to say that the 1996-2000 Yankees was a more successful model, no?

You can look in hindsight and say certain players didn't work out, but I somehow doubt the yankees go out and add pitchers just thinking "I hope this at least boosts ticket/merch sales"

But pointing at mistakes and saying the system doesn't work, even though another system that runs on basically the same model (Red Sox) does...

I guess the question is, where will the Red Sox be in 2015, as they seem primed to add Free Agent fluff year after year (i.e. Mark Teixeira)

The Red Sox might have a similar system as the Yankees, but it's certainly worked better than New York's, at least for the past 5 years. And their homegrown products have worked out better the past 5 years. Youkilis, Pedroia, Papelbon, Lester.

In 2015 the Red Sox will be in Boston.

Thanks Rawb

I always compare the fluffing of Ellsbury to Chamberlain...Chamberlain has been better, but neither lived up to the hype IMO...

And I wouldn't be so sure About the Sox being in Boston in 2015...they always talk about building a new park...who knows, the Patriots did it, maybe the sox are next? ; - )

plus the yankees "homegrown" prospects are older...

Posada and Jeter are both kinda old

Though Cano and Cabrera are younger, its fair to say at least Cano is pretty good...or was I suppose
