About the Author

Ea34
I grew up in LA. My intro to sports was with the Showime Lakers, so I was spoiled from a young age. Over the past few years, soccer has become a bigger and bigger passion for me, surpassing all other sports in my mind.

I now live in NYC and have no local teams that I'd like to root for (in fairness, the Mets are a lot of fun!). I am a huge fan of sports history and analysis and like to read and learn about as many eras and sports as possible.

C'Mon D-Wade! You (and I) Are Better Than That!

What’s up with D-Wade?

Adulterer? STDs? Deadbeat dad? Sleazy business partner? Closet pothead?

If his soon-to-be ex-wife and former business partner are to be believed, as reported by the AP, Dwyane Wade ’s off-court behavior hardly qualifies the Miami Heat superstar as a role model.

What exactly has Wade been accused of? Well…

  • Siohvaughn Wade, Dwyane’s high-school sweetheart-turned-estranged wife, is claiming that in 2007, Wade infected her with an unspecified sexually transmitted disease, which he himself contracted from a woman that was not his wife. She has since withdrawn the claim from the couple's divorce proceedings, but still stands behind it, and retains the right to re-file it in the future.
  • Future-Former-Mrs.-Wade, the mother of D-Wade’s two sons, also claims that Wade is an absentee father who often goes “weeks at a time” without speaking with his children.
  • Additionally, Richard Von Houtman, a former business associate, has filed a breach of contract suit against Wade, who’d allowed the use of his name in the name of a handful of bars named "D Wade's Sports Grill", claiming that Wade hasn't met promotion requirements.
  • In addition to the lawsuit, Von Houtman also claims that Wade rented an apartment in Miami, which he used to smoke pot and host sex parties. Frankly, that sounds like a blast, but maybe not the best behavior for a married father of two with as much riding on his image as D-Wade.

Through his lawyers, Wade has denied all of these claims, asserting that both his wife and Von Houtman are looking to ruin his good name. He’s even gone so far as to file a libel suit against both parties, reportedly seeking at least $50,000 from each. Whether these claims are factual (and if so, to what extent?), remains to be seen, but the damage is already being done. For Dwyane Wade, having his name linked with stories like this (and all at once!), and this incident looks like it may have some legs, is about as bad from a PR perspective as anything not involving an arrest.

One nagging part of this story persists- Dwyane Wade is not the first high profile athlete to get divorced, nor is he the first to have a falling-out with a business partner, but those situations normally work themselves out without too much hoopla, which begs the question: is Wade just really unlucky to have fallen in with two really nasty characters? Or is some of this stuff true?

I am frankly not happy with myself for writing about this. I believe that celebrities are no better than you and me- just as flawed, and susceptible to the same pitfalls- if not more so. And they are entitled to lead their own lives however they’d like- and as long as they’re not running afoul of the law, they don’t owe us an explanation for anything. It’s just that, for some reason, this one surprised me. For some reason, because he can throw down a mean dunk, I developed the opinion that "that doesn't seem like Dwyane Wade”. And that’s another thing I’m not happy about. I thought I was smarter than this.

I don't care about athlete's personal lives any more than they care about mine. ESPECIALLY when it comes to scorned women and divorces. This is the kind of stuff "Access Hollywood", et al spews out to boost their ratings amongst the fewer-teethed population, not sports journalism.

Florida is a no-fault divorce state...though giving a woman an STD (assuming he knew he had it) certainly toes a line

Meh. This still pales in comparison (scandal-wise, not starpower-wise) to Elijah Dukes' divorce...

In fact, we should probably just go ahead an establish the "Dukes Scale" for stuff like this... This Wade thing is like a 5. I mean, he didn't even threaten to murder her, or impregnate a 17-year-old foster child who was living in the care of a relative. What an amateur.

A very valid point. It's sad that Wade has chosen this moment to take the high road. Given the strong start to this story, I was expecting more from a clutch performer like D-Wade.

Message to D21Dub... "You dead Dawg! You and yo kids!"

That being said, Elijah's ex-wife NiShea Gilbert makes D-Wade's soon-to-be-ex-wife look like a TOTAL amateur as well...

P.S. - The transcripts from the hearings are dramatic gold.

I feel bad for Elijah. It's clear that he was easily outwitted by a slutty gold-digger without scruples of ANY variety.

She straight up scammed his dumb ass.

The fun parts are where Gilbert tells the judge about how Dukes had "roid rage" from all of his steroid usage in one sentence then explains how he never showed any emotion because he was smoking pot every day. (Which is it, NiShea?) Also, niShea explains their first "date" - where he used his famous come on line "You need to be my next baby-mama".... because after all, he already had 4 kids with 4 different baby-mamas.

The underage (17) rape of the foster-relative ended up being a total lie - well, by "lie" I mean she WAS 17 but later explained that SHE seduced him (consentual) then felt remorseful afterwards when she found out she wasn't pregnant with one of Elijah's babys...

Then there was the famous death threat/text message and gun photo... then the subsequent radio call-in episode. That was when the Rays were in Arizona and I was on my way to the stadium... Needless to say - NO ONE was going to corner the 255lb (ripped and HUGE) Dukes in the lockerroom with any "tough" questions that day...

I was there when he issued the famous "I ain't talkin' to none y'all" line right after his last appearance in a Rays uni. I really wanted to offer him to come back to my house to share a few bongs and talk it out, but wasn't going to test his patience either. He is a thick dude that is better served un-angered (and I'm kinda greedy with the stash)!

To be fair - ever since he ditched the bitch, his life has swayed more towards an even keel (for the most part). He had an invisible season with the nats but still has a glint of a baseball career ahead of him....

"Von Houtman also claims that Wade rented an apartment in Miami, which he used to smoke pot and host sex parties." And to think, I thought it was cool that I had one room in my house to display all of my sports memoribilia. I wish I would have known about the pot and sex apartments.

D. Wade is a JOKE and everybody that believes that good guy Christian bull???? they see on television are so naive. D. Wade is no more a Christian than I am a NBA player. You see on ESPN how they went back to show you the apartment building where he grew up. Wade has never gave one penny to the Englewood community from which he came from nor has he given anything to his family's so called first church home. He's never done any real shyt like Chris Paul to give back to his back to his Englewood community. All he has done is basketball camps and his so called basketball camps are held in the South Suburbs of Chicago( Near Robbins).

The reason he went to stay with his father in the first place is their was no one took look after him. His sister (Tragil)who was so called taking care of him at 18yrs was running the street, dating a drug dealer who was trying to kill her, so she moved to San Diego with her cousins to escape. Like she was doing it for him, that's bullsh??, she was leaving. His grandmother could not keep up with him, that's why he was put on a bus to go move with his father. Wade never partied in South Beach when he first got to the league,he stayed his azz at home in North Miami. His wife wore the pants and ran that house. He was the next NBA ambassador until he started hanging out with Shaq in Miami. Shaq ruined him (Ask Kobe).

Nobody close to him are ever gonna tell him what he’s doing is wrong, because he will kick their azz out of his favorite five. So they all go along with it. All the people in his family that’s alleged “christians” turns a blind eye to everything he does (including his best friend/ cousin " Antoine", his mother “Jolinda the pastor” and his sister “Tragil- the devout christian, but very misguided bisexual savior of the family.” That's why he bought his mother a church a 20 miles away from where he grew up.(so she would get off his back about how he was treating his wife Siohvaughn and letting the fame go to his head). They were never a happy couple! They spent too much time of their day fighting to be happy.

Gabby is an industry slut. She just sees a great opportunity, like LisaRaye did, But Gabby needs to take note of what just happen to Lisaraye. Wade has been infatuated with white girls and Gabby for a long time. He paid Siohvaughn to shut up about the STD to protect Gabby and his reputation among the NBA elite. He had to countersue, but he will drop it soon( He has to make it look like he's mad, but he's really relieved she dropped it). Wade wants to be like Jordan (phuck white girls, smoke cigars, be an NBA star, etc.) The whole family has a history of cheating. It's a family curse (Mother did it to his father. that's why he left and she started doing drugs),Sister did it to her ex-husband, step brothers did it, now Dwyane).Let me shut up now I know too much about this situation. LMAO

Wow. I am surprised by how many of you actually care about what D-wade does on his spare time. The dude lives in Miami and is in his 20's. The fact of the matter is, he is a basketball player. Not an accountant, or promoter, or even a good husband. He IS one of the best players in the league, playing on a team that needs some help. Hell, I'd have to have some sex parties and pot parties too if I dropped 45 every night, just to have my teamates struggle to score another 50 between them. Unless he's pulling "Ray Carruth's" or "Chris Brown's" I don't care what the man does in his down time. He makes millions of $$'s a year. Let the man have some fun. It sounds like he needs to ditch the wife and go be a 20-something basketball player.
