Bruins slice the Sabres

Manny Fernandez and the Boston Bruins gave up four first period goals against the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday.

But that was all they would give up. The Bruins scored three goals in the first and four more over the next two periods to stretch its winning streak to three games and the point streak to eight games, while pushing the Sabres losing streak to three games.

The Sabres got a quick goal from Jason Pominville 1:41 in to the first period. The Bruins responded a minute and 18 seconds later when Chuck Kobasew tipped in a David Krejci pass. A minute and a half later Sabres forward Derek Roy tipped in a Toni Lydman pass to make it 2-1. Thomas Vanek then snipped his 14th goal of the season over Fernandez’s left shoulder. 40 seconds later Krejci pulled the Bruins with in one. Then 12:37 into the period Vanek redirected a Roy pass to make it 4-2 on his 15th goal of the season. Marc Savard then pulled the Bruins back with in one less than a minute later when he tapped a Phil Kessel into a wide open net. The exciting period ended with seven goals scored, it was the first seven-goal period the Bruins were involved in since 1995.

It was perhaps the sloppiest period the Bruins have played all season, but it didn’t last longer than that one period as they locked down in the next two periods and came out on top.

Captain Zdeno Chara tied the game at four all with a power play goal that he ripped top shelf on a Bruins power play 2:37 into the period. Ten minutes later Kobasew scored his second goal of the game when he banked a shot off of Ryan Miller’s leg from behind the goal line. Five minutes later Chara scored his second goal of the game and the second on the power play. The goal was almost an exact replica of his first goal, a blazing slap shot top shelf over the shoulder of Miller.

A minute and 16 seconds into the third period Phil Kessel scored the Bruins seventh goal and the sent Sabres goalie Ryan Miller to the bench.

The Sabres went one for four on the power play as the Bruins have now killed 81.2% of their penalties this season. While the Bruins went two for seven on its power play’s running their power play to 21.3%. The Sabres have killed 85.7% of its penalties and has scored on 20.4% of its power play’s.

Seven Boston Bruins had a multi-point game. David Krejci had three points, and Marc Savard had four points. Savard’s fourth point of the game was the 600th of his career.

The Bruins are off on Thursday and will host the Panthers on Friday.

Marco Sturm missed the game with an upper body injury and is listed as day to day.
