Bruins send Penguins Packing

The Boston Bruins have extended their winning streak to a season high five games. Behind a solid effort by Tim Thomas, 27 saves on 28 shots, the Bruins rolled to a 5-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Marco Sturm got things rolling when he blasted a shot past Ty Conklin. Three minutes later Glen Metropolit got his second assist when he got a pretty pass from Aaron Ward and then he hit Marco Sturm with a pass and Sturm drove across the Penguins blue line and blasted his second goal of the night past the Penguins goaltender to put the Bruins up 2-0.

About 2 minutes into the second period Zdeno Chara blasted a slap shot in the direction of the net, the puck deflected off of Darryl Sydor of the Penguins and into the back of the net. The Penguins then tried to get some momentum to swing their way by making a goaltending switch. The placed Marc-Andre Fluery into the net. Fluery had not played a minute of an NHL game in 35 games due to a high ankle sprain he suffered in December.

Much later in the period Marc Savard used a burst of speed to beat out an icing call and then got hammered into the corner. Shawn Thorton (5 game point streak) then came along and scooped up the loose puck and fired it in the direction of the net, PJ Axelsson then picked up the rebound and put it home.

After a rough third period that saw a ton of penalty minutes Pascal Dupuis, who came over to the team in the Hossa trade with Atlanta, put his first goal as a Penguin in and broke Thomas’ bid for a second straight shut out.

After a very big fight that saw Milan Lucic take on notorious NHL bad boy Jarkko Ruutu, David Krejci tipped in a Mark Stuart slap shot for his second goal in as many days. The Bruins have now gotten points in seven straight games. They are still tied for sixth place with the New York Rangers who also won tonight. The Bruins will face the Atlanta Thrashers at 1 PM at the TD Banknorth Garden on Saturday.

I voted for your article - don't know why, but I did  ;-) Bruins get a two goal lead and it's hard to work from there. They play the neutral zone trap so well.
