Bruins breakthrough

It is something that has not happened since March of last season. And it took an extra few minutes to do it. What was it? The Boston Bruins finally beat the Montreal Canadiens. They beat their arch rival 2-1 in game three of their first round playoff series.
The game was a must win for the Bruins who came into the game trailing the Canadians 2 games to none. Milan Lucic knew that his team needed a good start when he put the puck past Carey Price about six minutes into the first period. Montreal would answer about four minutes into the second period when Tom Kostopoulos put a shot into Tim Thomas’ pads that slid out when Thomas tried to slide across the top of the crease and the puck poked out and Kostopoulos finished off what he started and pushed the puck across the Boston goal line.
After that point the game turned into a physical defensive battle. Both goaltenders stood on their heads in the third period with Tim Thomas making some huge saves in the overtime period to keep his team in the game. With both teams killing off two penalty’s in the third period and keeping the game a tie game.
After a few desperate saves by Tim Thomas and a defensive scramble that had Montreal fans thinking they were going up 3-0 in the series, Marc Savard caught a cross ice pass from Peter Schaefer and ripped a shot from the bottom of the left circle that found its way into a gapping net that saw Carey Price drift across to try and bat it down about five seconds to late. For Marc Savard’s first career playoff goal, and it could not have come at a bigger time. The goal came as Tim Thomas got to the Bruin bench for the extra attacker after a delayed penalty was coming to a Montreal player.
The win gives the Bruins some breathing room as they close the gap to a one game deficit. Game four will be on Tuesday night in Boston.
