Bring Him Back

Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick became a free man yesterday. He was released from Federal Custody and rebuilding his image is now being talked
about.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has Vick's NFL career in the palm of his hand. Goodell will need to make a decision on whether to reinstate Vick into the NFL.

Rebuilding Vick's career will take lots of work, but it could be accomplished. This country is a forgiving country and many athletes have done worse than Vick. But will people understand?

If Goodell reinstates Vick into the NFL; what NFL team will sign him? He will bring a huge change to any team and lots of media attention isn't positive.

Will he play quarterback again? Who knows, but he won't be a starting quarterback. Vick will need to work his way as a starting quarterback and that could be hard for an athlete that hasn't done anything athletic for a year. He needs to get back into football shape and that could take a while, but Vick recently hired a personal trainer, Tom Shaw who worked with several successful quarterbacks in the NFL.

Nobody should have a problem forgiving Vick for his past mistakes. Many athletes have done worse and have rebuilt their image. For an example: Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, was on trial for rape and that destroyed his image, but now everyone has forgotten about his wrongdoing. Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis was accused of murder, but now his image is safe. Former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth was charged with a DUI manslaughter. Vick could regain the trust of his peers, but it'll take some work.

If there aren't any NFL teams that are interested in Vick, going to the UFL should be considered. He won't make as much money, but some UFL teams have shown interest and they're willing to give Vick a second chance. Why not? it's still football and he's doing what he loves to do. It gives him a chance to still rebuild his image.

Everyone has made mistakes in life, but learning from them is most important. Vick should be given a chance to prove that he's learned from his mistakes, because other athletes have received the chance to do the same.

Of course he should be brought back and given another chance. But until he shows more remorse who knows what Roger will do. A lot of middle America was really pissed off about the dog issue and the fact that he did it himself really puts most people off. He paid his price and has done his time so yes let him try to come back and play. It will be very interesting to see which team wants to take a chance with him. His talent is still there but the PR price that may have to be paid is going to put off alot of NFL teams. How do you explain to middle america that you want someone on your team that did the things he did to dogs and then lied about it until he got caught. Even at my age I think that he should get another opportunity to play but I can see the uphill fight he is going to have to prove himself to American sports fans. Good Luck Mr.Vick because you are going to need it.

Now he has to show remorse too? Does every ex-con have to grovel at your feet before they're released on probation?

I don't understand what he has to show remorse for. How on earth does he owe anyone/thing other than those dogs an apology. He did not denigrate the game therefore he owes the fans nothing.

Yes, I really dislike this 'remorse' thing. I don't think that should really enter into it. It doesn't really matter if he's sorry. He was caught, served time and that's the end of it.

Where's Goodell's remorse for looking the other way while ticket prices go up and parking and concessions are reprehensibly high?

I have not forgotten the actions of the people you mention. Nor have I forgotten Rae Carruth, Leonard Little, Nate newton, Bam Morris, Jared Allen, and on and on and o.....

Vick paid his debt to society and deserves a second chance, but he needs to be kept on a short leash. (no pun intended.)

on another note, part of what bothers me is that we do not know what kind of special treatment these "stars" get during sentencing because of their "star" status. Meaning it is difficult to say whether they've served their debt to society when the amount of debt could be skewed due to their status.

How did Vick owe some kind of debt to "society" anyway? He forced dogs to fight, and killed some dogs. Big fucking deal. We've got CEO's screwing the little guy every day, our former president and his staff are war criminals, the military industrial complex has enslaved the everyday citizen into an endless cycle of production and consumption until they're a burned out shell of a human, at which point the corporations discard you and find a younger model, institutional racism is still rampant in this country...I could go on. And somebody says Mike Vick, who fought with some fucking dogs, owes something to society at large? How fucked up is that. If anything society owes Vick for making an example out of him as a big black villain while the powers that be continue to distract and destroy.

He owed a debt to society because he was convicted of a crime. It doesn't matter where his crimes land on your moral compass. You do the crime, you do the time.

Vick was not "made" a villian by society or the powers that be. He facilitated an illegal dog fighting enterprise. He didn't just happen to be someone who was into dog fighting, he facilitated the disturbing practice.

Cheezer, You probably didn't forget about those incidents, but there image has been fixed. Vick should be able to come back and play. Everyone should get a second chance.

He has payed his debt to society and he has suffered enough. 20 Months in prison, losing millions of dollars, getting kicked out of the NFL during his prime. He has dome his time. Bring him back, he was one of my favorite players, and now he has a second chance. Give him a second chance.

Suffered enough! What about the dogs he killed himself and all the disappointed fans. Without question, he deserves a second chance. THe question has become can he still play an NFL starting QB or did the 20 months inactive ruin his chances to really succeed in that position. Some people think, I am not one of them, that he would be a great defensive back. Yes, he would but what he would bring to the table as a running back far surpasses he defensive talents. The only thing, I think is bothering the NFL management and owners is how is he going to react to people really yelling so crappy things at him. And another question that probably is going to be brought up is did he really change, is he still hanging with the same type of individuals that got him into the dogs to begin with. Image is the largest concern that the NFL has and we all know what Roger Goodell thinks about punishment and the control issue he has always had since becoming the commissioner. Someone on a talk radio show a few weeks ago out here on the west coast talked about the most perfect fit for Vick would be the Raiders. He still is a very valuable asset on the field and it will be very interesting the next couple of days to see where he will land and how much he will make and how far will the league go in trusting him. I am not a soothsayer and really don't have a clue about the outcome but I most certainly wish Michael Vick well and good luck he has been missed in the NFL by the fans and his teammates so lets play it out. Think about having Vick in the backfield as a running back or wr and the troubles the defense would be having trying to figure out what was coming next. Romo, Manning, etc'......

It will be hard for Vick to play any other position, because his experience isn't good with it. A second or third quarterback should be considered.
