Breaking News: Harden Traded To Chicago

By Jason http://www.3rdstringsafety.com/ July 8, 2008 6:49 pm

It’s official.

Comcast Sportsnet Chicago reports that the Chicago Cubs have acquired Rich Harden from the Oakland Athletics in a six-player deal. The Cubs will reportedly also get Chad Gaudin from the A's in exchange for RHP Sean Gallagher, outfielder Matt Murton, infielder Eric Patterson and catcher Josh Donaldson.

What Did Oakland Get?

Gallagher is a 22 year old right handed starting pitcher. According to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus...

"Gallagher is solid across the board, with a low-90s fastball, looping curve, and deceptive changeup all rating as average to slightly above, as does his command and control. He's aggressive on the mound, goes after hitters, and shows confidence in all his offerings." Gallagher was considered a three star prospect by his rankings heading into this season.

This year, Gallagher is 3-4 with a 4.45 in 10 starts, while striking out 7.3 batters per 9 innings. Gallagher projects as a middle of the rotation pitcher.  He should step into Oakland's rotation immediately.

Matt Murton has always been a player I felt was highly underutilized. Since being aquired by the Cubs, from Boston, Mutyon has spent most of his time as a bench player. In 2006, he put up a solid line of .297/.365/.444 in 142 games.  After that year he was inexplicably demoted to a bench player and most recently this year to the minors. Murton, now 26, has had his development hindered by his misuse. Expect him to start in Oakland and put up solid numbers.

Josh Donaldson (22) is a talented, but raw, offensive catcher. Donaldson crushed low A pitching last year and put up a line of .346/.470/.605 while hitting nine homers and stealing six bases in 49 games. Donaldson has struggled this year after being moved up to A ball. Donaldson was also regarded as a three star prospect coming into this season. If Donaldson’s offense continues to develop and defense is at least average he could be a poor mans Russel Martin.

Eric Patterson, 25, is a second baseman who moved to the outfield because of his defensive shortcomings. He's a toolsy offensive player who has pop, knows how to take a pitch and has a tremendous amount of speed. He’s dominated the past two years at AAA. In 49 games this season he’s hit .323/.356/.519 while stealing ten bases without getting caught once. Patterson has struggled in 38 big league at bats this season. At worst, Patterson will make a very useful utility player.

What Did Chicago Get?

Gaudin, 25, has been a long a reliever this year with Oakland (in previous seasons he had been a starter.) He's 5-3 with a 3.59 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP.

Harden of course is the key piece to the deal. Harden is a dominant front line starter when healthy. In fact he might have the best stuff in all of baseball. Of course he also has more DL trips than he does Cy-Youngs. He's 5-1 this year with a 2.34 ERA in 13 starts. Oh yeah, he also strikes out 10/9 and has an off the charts stuff rating of 42.

That's the good. The bad is that Harden only started 13 games the past two years because of injury. In fact he hasn’t exceeded 31 starts in a season and that was all the way back in 2004. Harden will also be getting expensive in the years to come as he reaches free agency after the 2009 season.

At first glance it doesn't seem Billy Beane got enough for Harden, especially considering the A's are in a position to win this year. However, remember Billy Beane has a knack for knowing when a pitcher is going to break down (or in this case continue breaking down) do the names Mark Mulder, Keith Foulke, and Billy Koch sound familiar to you?

The Cubs certainly made this trade in response to the C.C. Sabathia acquisition. If, and that’s a giant if, Harden can stay healthy, the Cubs just got a whole lot better that's for sure.

Just when Kelsdad said that there were no trades that go on before the trade deadline anymore. 2 major trades already this week.

This was a pretty good trade for both teams, I think, but the A's could've done a lot better I think. The A's are stacked with a good starting rotation, and should keep it that way, unless they get offered someone who could really help their offense.

Sean Gallagher and Matt Murton have potential. You're definitely right, Jason, on the fact that Murton has always been underutilized. He's not going to get any playing time now that the Cubs have Fukudome, Johnson, Jim Edmonds, and Alfonso Soriano.

You're definitely right about what Billy Beane is doing though. I've always wondered whether Harden was the real deal, and now that he's going to another team in the NL, it might be hard for him to adjust. I think it's been more about whether he's been healthy or not.

And don't forget to add Barry Zito to that list.

This reminds me of the NBA this season when the Suns traded for Shaq and then everyteam reacted by trading for someone. Teams need to relax when something like this happens. Harden is a great pitcher when he is healthy, but I think it is an overreaction by the Cubs. Maybe they should have just traded for Sabathia.

Really...i don't see how Chicago gave up anything too terrible without getting a return...Harden doesn't need to be the #1...or even a #2...they can coddle him, baby him and get enough out of him till the playoffs...

Props to the Cubs for pulling this off so quickly. And it's not like they made a reactionary trade either. The Cubs only gave up one guy who figured in their plans and only Gallagher was on their top prospect list, (third, I believe).

And if the name rings a bell, it should, Eric is Corey's little brother. Let's just hope for the A's sake that's the only similarity.

Out of all the top pitchers the A's have had lately, Harden, Haren, Blanton, Zito, Hudson, Mulder, etc, it's kind of weird the two guys with the best stuff have had the least productive careers because of injury.

This is the big point people miss.

None of the players traded figured into the cubs starting plans over the next 3-4 years, if ever. Maybe Gallagher, though I would argue Marshall being a lefty is much more valuable and more likely to be a long term fixture in the rotation.

Glaudin can eat up the same innings Gallagher would in the bullpen if need be. If, and if Harden stays healthy this is a steal for the Cubs.

If he doesn't, oh well, they haven't really lost out anything too serious.

This is a steal for the Cubs in my point of view. But I'll be honest, it's hard to ever disagree with Billy Beane. Anyways, the Cubs gave away a guy they've hosed for the last two years in Matt Murton. He's got a great concept of the strike zone and is a solid contact hitter, even if his power has fallen off. The key to the deal for me is Chad Gaudin because that takes Jason Marquis out of the rotation. Now you're looking at Zambrano, Harden, Dempster, Lilly and Gaudin. That's only rivaled by Sheets, Sabathia, Parra, Suppan and Bush. The battle for the Central is going to be a fun one if everyone stays healthy.

Its stupid to think that you can trade nothing for something...even trades as salary dumps yield something... and if you think you hosed billy bean, you're probably wrong...the cubs might not need those players, but to think the A's didn't get something doesn't suggest any forward thinking

Somebody did a little writeup not long ago analyzing some of Beane's trades, saying the guy is a genius, blah, blah, blah. Then the commenters analyzed some of the deals, and as it turns out, Beane is a facking moron. And anyone who thinks he made this deal to improve the A's is too.

I didn't say they hosed Beane. I said the Cubs hosed Matt Murton. That guy had a phenomenal season in '06 and Pinella basically told him to piss off.

And I didn't say A's didn't get anything, cause they did. But the Cubs didn't lose anything because none of these guys were in their future plans, except for maybe Gallagher.

.297/13/62 hardly qualifies as phenomenal.

Murton is a far below average outfielder, his offense, while decent, isn't good enough to offset his defense. On the contrary, as with Felix Pie, the Cubs gave Murton far more chances than he should have to prove he could play, and all he ended up doing was prove he couldn't.

The fact the Cubs have Soriano on the DL, and have moved an infielder to the outfield, and signed a dinosaur to play OF, as opposed to calling up Murton should tell you all you need to know about his game.

He is better off in the AL, as a DH he won't have to worry about playing defense, but don't think he's all of a sudden going to be the starting leftfielder and hit third, because he's not.

His range does suck, but the kid deserves to be in the majors. In '06 he batted .297/.365/.444 with 13 HRs in regular playing time. But the Cubs are a big market team and signed Reed Johnson and Jim Edmonds instead. They called up Eric Patterson this year over him, only to see him bat .237/.318/.342. He played an awful left field too. He had three errors in nine games. Reed Johnson has identical numbers to him as Murton. Why pay a veteran the money to play the same baseball? That's what I meant by getting hosed. Murton is not a superstar, he's a role player that deserved a job on the Cubs team, but the Cubs just flat out didn't like him. He doesn't have enough pop to be a DH, so he's just a perfect spot start, pinch hitter who can play the corner outfield positions.

I respectfully disagree, Aaron. The Cubs signing of Edmonds and Johnson had nothing to do with their market size. Neither of those guys will sell more tickets or merchandise. They got Edmonds because the Cubs were weak defensively in the OF, and Johnson because they needed a fourth OF who could actually play defense, and contribute off the bench in a pinch hitting/spot starter role. If Murton could have filled that role, they wouldn't have signed Johnson for sure, and maybe not Edmonds either.

"The key to the deal for me is Chad Gaudin because that takes Jason Marquis out of the rotation"

Gaudin will pitch in relief, just as he has all season.

The pickup of Harden will mean more to the Cubs than the Sabathia pickup does for Milwaukee, providing Harden stays healthy.

Word was they were going to move Gaudin to the rotation, but that's Milwaukee sports radio for you.
