Bob Costas Thinks I'm a Loser

Bob Costas, HBO/NBC the 16 inch tall sportscaster, apparently doesn't like bloggers. Same applies for Mike Wilbon, Stephen A. Smith, etc. These are his quotes in an interview with the Miami Herald before I get upset:

Many newspapers (including The Miami Herald) allow readers to post comments, hoping to generate web hits and enlightened exchange of ideas.

I understand with newspapers struggling and hoping to hold on to, or possibly expand their audiences, I understand why they do what they do, Costas said. 'But it's one thing if somebody just sets up a blog from their mother's basement in Albuquerque and they are who they are, and they're a pathetic get-a-life loser, but now that pathetic get-a-life loser can piggyback onto someone who actually has some level of professional accountability and they can be comment No. 17 on Dan Le Batard's column or Bernie Miklasz' column in St. Louis. That, in most cases, grants a forum to somebody who has no particular insight or responsibility. Most of it is a combination of ignorance or invective.'

What bothers Costas -- and he's not alone -- is Internet and talk radio commentary that ``confuses simple mean-spiritedness and stupidity with edginess. Just because I can call someone a name doesn't mean I'm insightful or tough and edgy. It means I'm an idiot.

``It's just a high-tech place for idiots to do what they used to do on bar stools or in school yards, if they were school yard bullies, or on men's room walls in gas stations. That doesn't mean that anyone with half a brain should respect it.''

First of all, I set up my blog IN MY OWN ROOM COSTAS!!! With a computer and everything. What this set of quotes tells me is that mainstream media is afraid they are getting taken over and in some cases more reliable bloggers in the parent's basement. To generalize that the average sports blogger is a know nothing get-a-life loser is stupid because Mr. Costas, bloggers like Cougar2000 and a couple of other guys I know who work for the Seattle Times, actually work and write for newspapers. That's right, apparently the know nothing get-a-life losers actually have to know their stuff.

If you want to talk about professional accountability, then explain to me why ESPN, FOX Sports, and other sports sites have actually been caught plagiarizing (for the ones with copyrights) from blogs? That's right, apparently some of us have access to things you don't. The media is getting beaten to the punch and we can't have that can we?

If we don't have nearly the access who are the people that are responsible for delivering correct news and maintaining their accountability? The mainstream media, which Mr. Costas, YOU ARE IN!!!!

That's a friggin elitist and hierarchy mentality Bob.

Join me my fellow losers and let's get a life!

I have never really liked Costas...always felt he was overblown. These comments solidify this belief. And the way that Mike Greenberg fawns over him is emetic. The TV guys get way too much credit. There's a reason newscasters are called "news readers" or "presenters" in Europe.

Give Boring Bob a break. He just lost his job over at HBO.

Something about all the viewers preferring to read the up to the minute latest on NFL news over at Deadspin rather than wait a week for "Inside the NFL".

The sports media culture has only itself to blame. Acting like a bunch of facktarded idiots on ESPN has its price to pay. Apparently Costas is hoping that making comments like this will get him a new job there.

And you know what? It will probably work.

Fire the Facktards. Long live the bloggers.

Costas' quotes really piss me off. Who the hell is he to say that just because I blog I know nothing about sports? Did you play college baseball Costas? no, i did. I think I know more about the game then you ever will. Just because you have an access passes and are an elist pompous a-hole, doesn't make you any more knowledgable than a me or any other fan. You are just a glorified talking head on tv that probably enjoys wearing his makeup and making people wait on you hand and foot in your dressing room. d*uchebag.

Doesn't this jack-off wake from his coma every four years to host the Olympics?

I went to a broadcasting seminar back in college and Costas was a guest speaker. At the time, I guess you could say blogs weren't nearly as big as they are now. But when someone asked him if traditional media (IE Radio, TV, Print) would still survive in a world of digital media (Internet Radio, Internet TV, Digital Print) Costas said, "The majority of Americans are traditionalists." All I could think was, "Yeah - but the traditionalists will be 70-80 years old in 20-30 years."

I guess he's just one of those people who, at some point in their lives, just decided to stop learning and adapting to their surroundings. The advancement of technology is altering media, not killing it. Costas is just another example of someone who can't change with the times - a dinosaur if you will.

That whole "mother's basement" thing is the "shouting 'Free Bird' at a concert" of mocking bloggers. It's beyond cliche at this point, Bob. It only makes you look pathetic and unoriginal.

That said, the comment sections under articles at newspapers, etc. usually do bring the worst kinds of idiots out of the woodwork. Have you ever read the "Conversation" under an ESPN article? The level of discourse there would make the founders wonder why they even bothered procuring us free speech.

So I guess I'm saying that "bloggers" need to be differentiated from "anonymous commenters at news sites"... Blogs require a measure of commitment and at least some command of the English language (if you expect anyone to read, that is), while hit-and-run posters at ESPN don't have any accountability whatsoever. It is the latter group that truly does deserve our contempt, and I think Costas might be trying to say that, but he is misguided when he equates those people with "bloggers".

Yeah but for every good "blogger" there's 150,000 regurgitators whining and bitching about the same stuff over and over.

And for every truly quality, original, creative journalistic mind there are 150,000 "bloggers"... regurgitating, whining and bitching about the same stuff over and over.

Here "clarified" his comments today:

"My commentary was aimed solely at a portion of Internet sports discourse, an unfortunately large portion, that consists of nothing more than potshots, ad hominem arguments, ignorance and invective. ...

I was absolutely not saying that most or all bloggers were losers. It just seems so often that commenters use insults in the place of arguments. ... But forgive me for not placing the exact same value on an comment on a political blog that I would to something said by Ted Koppel."

Costas is a smart guy, but he's also a partisan from a generation of commentators who only had maybe 20 or thirty guys to compete with. Now that technology tears down the print and video Berlin Wall, he probably feels a bit threatened. They all do. The truth is that right now MLB, NFL and eventually the others are developing their own media outlets on the web faster than the print and video guys. Some, like ESPN, will pay the leagues their rights money to get access to the players. More of the rest, though, are going to find when they come to the web that they're getting hit by the bloggers on one side, and by the leagues that are basically saying:

'Screw you, we don't need you any more to get our message out in your market(s), and we can control our own spin.'

There are a lot of credible, professional writers who are leveraging the web. Then there's Ty.

After seeing Ty at work here at armchairGM, you have to cut old Costas a little slack. He has a point. There are those incendiary barstool folks out here too.

Still, for those writers who set up their own blogs, or for those small companies that understand that reaching a modern audience means publishing on the web, is it the credible writer that props up the Herald, or the Herald's money and and name taht props up the writer?

Personally, I don't read the Miami Herald's balance sheet. I've also seen a lot of half-assed young reporters with visions of granduer, LeBatard included, come up with very misinformed stuff.

Even veterans like Tom Verducci are not protected because of the name of his paper. He used his bully pulpit to villify John Henry Williams, buying into the even whackier world of Claudia, Ted Williams' daughther who had been both institutionalized and cut out of his will, without checking his facts first.

Good journalism is good journalism. Brand labels are only as good as the people typing for them, blog or 52 billion dollar sports empire.

At first I saw this, and I said, "That bastard!" He sat at Syracuse, in front of a full auditorium and multiple classrooms filled with college kids (many who want to be like him/have his job), and encouraged all of us to write and work hard as a way of getting better and getting into sports journalism. Then I realized, he's not referring to Manny, JuT, Davis and others here at AGM who put a lot of work into what they do. He's talking about the douchebag commenters and bloggers who give their opinions as if their experts. We all have egos, it's just those who flaunt them shamelessly Costas is talking about.
