Big Baby Played Like a Man

As the Boston Celtics played against the Orlando Magic tonight, it was a must win situation. They were down in the series 2-1 and Orlando looked unstoppable in Game 3. Everything seemed in array for the tired, but determined Celtics. But somehow, they just will not stop fighting.

The odds are against them. They're playing against a stronger team. They're playing against a team that has faced lesser struggles. But, for some reason, the Celtics aren't lying down.

With 32.5 seconds left on the clock and the Magic leading 92-91, Glen "Big Baby” Davis makes a jumper to bring the Celtics into the lead at 93-92. Soon after Davis knocked down a huge shot, the Magic makes two free-throws to put them ahead with about 12 seconds left on the clock, 94-93. Immediately, the Celtics call a full time out to devise a plan that could possibly tie the series at 2-all. After the time out, Pierce gets the ball and he then finds Davis. Davis knocks down the shot with 0.0. The Celtics win 95-94.

On that note, the Celtics will not give up, and if they are to lose this series the Magic would have gotten everything they had. This is what true basketball players are about; this is what true athletes are about: leaving everything on the playing field. When all is said and done, the Celtics will have done that.

Congrats to Big Baby for making the clutch shots and for playing like a man. Good luck to Boston Celtics and the Orlando Magic as they try to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.

The story lines that accompany playoff series formats are perhaps the most compelling aspect of all professional sports. The NBA, MLB and NHL generate a lot of good marketing exposure when guys like Glen Davis rise unexpectedly to the occasion. Fans expect their superstars to be front and center in the playoffs but all the more often, it is that athlete "that came from out of nowhere" that exceeded expectations and puts on perhaps a career defining performance that proves the difference in winning a championship.

I'm not a big Celtics fan, but I do remember losing all respect for Glen Davis when he was crying on the bench earlier this year as KG berated him. "THERE'S NO CRYING IN BAS(k)E(t)BALL!"

But he's regained my respect through his postseason performances. He's averaging around 17 points a game or something? And on a team with Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, he might be the most consistent player for the C's in the playoffs.

And last year, the Celtics wouldn't even allow Davis to take that shot, so just the fact that they have faith in him to make it speaks volumes about his development as a player.

You know, we've talked about this before, but I'll remind you guys. During the season, it has always been about the Big Three: Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce. In 2008, the Boston Celtics went 66-16 (one of the best seasons in NBA history)! Little did many consider was the fact that guys like Eddie House, James Posey, Leon Powe, and Tony were key players in many of their victories. When the playoffs came along, it's just about the same thing, only they get recognition for hitting big shots. Remember game 4 of the NBA Finals last year? Yeah... that game where the Celtics erased a 24 point deficit and came back to win? Well, during that game, Paul Pierce only scored 20 points, Ray Allen only scored 19, and KG scored 16. How'd they manage to get the win? Teamwork... and by the entire team making big shots. Eddie House and James Posey went for a combined 6 for 12 from beyond the arc (29 points combined). Leon Powe got the boards and made sure the Lakers had no choice on getting those second chance points.

Giving the ball to Big Baby Davis was a heck of a decision made by Paul Pierce. That shot that ended the game showed the world why the Celtics are still in the playoffs, and why they're still good without Garnett...
