There are some things about sports I don't like... the New Yuck Muts, the University of Michigan and those ASSCRACK UGLY HELMETS, the Floridamn Gayturds and the Miami Crimicanes. I also think that NASCRAP and professional wrestling are a HUGE waste of air time on television and would rather watch women's Jello wrestling!

Beltran talking smack to Philly?

Spring training isn't even a week old and already there's smack talking within the National League East. Outfielder Carlos Beltran called out Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins and said that the New York Mets are "the team to beat."

As Manny would say "WHAT THE FACK???" This is the same Beltran that was exiled from Houston a few years ago and these are the same New York Mets that choked toward the end of the 2007 season, giving the Phillies the NL East crown. Beltran hit .276 with the Mets last season, while Rollins hit .296. My message to Beltran is in the words of "Mike and Mike:" JUST SHUT UP! This is not your year! There's a new sherrif in town and you may have heard of them. The Atlanta Braves. Plus they have one of your former teammates, Tom Glavine, back, so if I were you, I would sit in your little corner in Flushing, get ready to move to the new ballpark next Spring and take my butt whipping Georgia-style.

I'm not sure that Tom Glavine is the kind of pitcher that makes a difference in a pennant race anymore. Johan Santana, on the other hand, is. I don't see the Braves winning any division title. In my mind it is between the Mets and the Phils. Assuming Lidge is still effective, putting Brett Myers back in the rotation makes the Phillies formidable, but Santana tilts the balance of power to Flushing. I'm not a Mets fan either, but I think they are the team to beat in the NL East.

I also think that's the kind of motivation the phillies would prefer...

Lidge did have some good moments for a really bad (and I mean bad!) Houston team, even with Biggio. Santana has never pitched in the NL, to my knowledge, so he may not be up to speed with regard to pitching in the NL.

Technically he has, its called interleague. And he's 16-4 with a 2.27 ERA with 182.2 IPs in 35 games or roughly 1 season total... Soooooo, I'm guessing he's up to speed. What I have heard is that his fastball has lost some velocity. But considering his pitch is the change, I don't think it will be terribly detrimental.

What I really can't believe is; that this article is about the braves. New Sheriff in town? Tom Glavine? I see how it makes them better, but everyone made moves to win more games (Santana for the mets and Lidge...therefore Myers for the phils).

So you could say the new sheriff is philadelphia and the mets are now trying to get it back...

but Atlanta?!?!

speaking of Atlanta's moves, Tex got something like 12.5mil via arbitration (or lack thereof)...howard is asking for 10 mil and the phils offered 7...

how is the arbitrator rationally going to give howard 7 when he compares similar players with lesser offensive stats...

Bill Giles is stupid, he should have just tried 9 and called it a day...i hope howard hoses the phils for 10

The numbers on Tex sound about right. This may or may not be a distraction for the Mets and the Phils. At the same time, Ryan Howard is a pretty good first baseman but he's no Prince Fielder.

Kerrell, I have to agree that bringing up Carlos Beltran's statements toward Jimmy Rollins has nothing to do with the Braves. I can understand if this was directed at an Atlanta player where you'd have a complaint, but this is something between the Mets and Phillies here, not the Mets and Braves.

Ultimately, pitching wins championships. So, Beltran and Rollins can talk smack all they want, but the bottom line here is that you don't pitch effectively day in and day out over 162 games, no MVP-like hitting numbers by one or two or more players will absolutely mean nothing.

The Mets and Phillies will likely be battling it out for the NL East title again this year. I couldn't agree more with this. I just feel that Bobby Cox is going to run out of luck this time after his recently counted-out teams continued to surprised the baseball world. Tom Glavine is all but finished as a Major League pitcher. It's his swan song year. And the Braves lost Andruw Jones to the Dodgers. That's a big blow to Atlanta. So, I really don't know where that team will stack up this season.

Braves are a third place team... they got too lazy with their scouting, and are no longer the best at it... the Braves aren't winning much; don't get me wrong, they will beat the weak Marlins and Nationals, but cannot compete with a healthy Mets or Phillies team

yeah...healthy...if the phils can get solid seasons out of Howard, Utley (i.e. 150+ games) Hamels and the rest of the staff (Some serious 30 starts each)...only Moyer didn't miss time on the starting staff last year...

if you max out their potential, your looking at Hamels (20), Myers (20), Kendrick (15), Moyer (12) and Eaton/Benson/Durbin (10) and that's 77 wins...now I know that's a lot, but its possible...

I think the phils can win 90 games, but the mets can win 100...if they win 100 there's no question in my mind they don't win the NL east

Myers will not win 20 games healthy or not, pitching his best every single game or not, he just won't

but yes, the Phillies have the potential to win around 90-95 games and the Mets have the potential to win 100... whether either will happen is yet to be seen
