Baseball Notebook: Players on Pace For 200 Hits

With the season very close to a third over, this is a good time to see what players have a shot at having 200 hits this season. A player would need about 34 hits a month to finish with 200 hits. So any player with 68 hits as of today has a shot.

Chipper Jones, who is leading the Majors with 77 hits, is on a pace to have 231 hits by the end of the season. However, if he falls below .400, that number will be much smaller. Lance Berkman (74) projects to have 222 hits. Josh Hamilton and Miguel Tejada (72) would project to have 216 hits. Christian Guzman is next with 69 hits, which projects to give him 207 hits at the end of the season.

Garrett Atkins and Albert Pujols, who have 67 hits project to have 201 hits. Ichiro Suzuki, who has had seven consecutive 200 hits seasons, is hitting .290, which is 61 points lower than his .351 average of last season when he had 238 hits. This season, his 65 hits project into 195 hits. So it won't take much for him to reach 200 hits again. Michael Young, who has five consecutive 200 hit seasons, has 62 so far this season, and is on a pace to have 186 hits. So will have to step it up to reach 200 hits this season.

Slumps and injuries can change all these predictions so all we can do is let them play the games and see what the final numbers are at the end of the season.

Nice summary of all the people who are on the verge of getting 200 hits, Niteowl. Good work. With a third of the season just about over for all team, I wouldn't be surprised if any of these guys got 200 hits by season's end. They're all very talented players.

Guzman is definitely the sleepers here too. Who would think that Guzman, someone who played only 46 games from 2006-2007, would come back in a big way? Not bad...

Garrett Atkins needs to be recognized too. For the past 2-3 seasons, it's always been Holliday, Helton, Tulowitzki. What about ATKINS!? 67 hits, a .330 batting average, 8 homers, and 30 RBI's? Hell, I'd have him on my team.

Great job by all these players so far. They're really showing all baseball fans what they can do during the start of the season. Let's hope they can all go for a strong finish.

With all those Rockies players on DL they really need Atkins worse than ever. Guzman's name surprised me too. Ichiro hitting below .300 is surprising but he has improved from hitting in the .250's not that long ago. The bad thing about injuries is that they can keep the players from getting enough at bats to get 200 hits.

I gotta give props to Josh Hamilton, if only for the comeback he's made from his off-field problems. The talent seemed to be there, but to overcome the addictions and suspensions is remarkable in and of itself.

Josh Hamilton is an unbelievable player, and as Xman alluded to, appears to have gotten himself grounded off the field as well. The Rangers will probably finish around .500, but if he keeps this up, he's got to be the AL MVP, right?
As for Michael Young: he started last year even worse and still got to 200. He's not far off the pace as is--I think he'll make it six straight.
