Baseball Notebook: Piazza a Hall of Fame Candidate?

Now that Mike Piazza has announced his retirement, he begins his five year wait to be eligible for Hall of Fame voting. He has a lifetime batting average of .308, a .377 on-base percentage and a .545 slugging percentage. Most catchers would like to have a .545 slugging percentage just once in their career, but Piazza averaged that over his 16 year career. He fell 873 hits short of 3000, but catchers aren't expected to have 3000 hits since they usually take a day off every few days. He hit 427 homers and drove in 1335 runs. Baseball-reference.com lists him 39th in home runs. He has hit more homers than Billy Williams, Duke Snider, Al Kaline, Dale Murphy andJohnny Bench. Of those players only Murphy has not been voted into the Hall of Fame.

His .545 slugging percentage which is 30th best alltime is higher than the slugging percentages of Hack Wilson, Duke Snider, Frank Robinson and Al Simmons all of whom are in the Hall of Fame. His .921 OPS is better than Hall of Famers Duke Snider, Al Simmons, and Mike Schmidt. His 16.20 at bats per home run is better than Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Eddie Mathews, Willie Stargell and Frank Robinson, who have all been admitted into the Hall of Fame.

It would be interesting to know what the readers think about his chances of going into the Hall of Fame are and if they think he deserves being enshrined at Cooperstown. I for one think he has excellent credentials to be voted into the Hall of Fame when he becomes eligible.

I heard this conversation hinted at the other day. And, I'm honestly not sure how I feel. My first instinct is no, Piazza is not a Hall of Famer, but his numbers are legit. I really just dont know.

My heart says no because he grew up in Phoenixville (just like that darned Andre Thornton), but the baseball fan in me says - obviously.

He does have one thing going against him...he never was known for his defensive work especially since he had trouble throwing out base stealers. Still he may be one of the greatest offensive catchers ever.

Homering more often than Hank Aaron gives you an idea of how many years it took Aaron to pass Babe Ruth.

Ray Schalk is in the Hall of Fame and he had 11 homers and 594 RBI's and a lifetime average of .353 and he played 18 years. He has been in the Hall of Fame for 53 years.

Just to correct Niteowl's mistake, Ray Schalk hit for a .253 (career) average... not .353.

This is where the positional aspect comes in to play. If he was a first baseman or an outfielder, then the answer would be a resounding no. The fact he put these numbers up as a catcher changes the equation.

If I had a vote, it would be no, for the simple reason as catcher is a defense first position, and Piazza was arguably the worst defensive catcher ever.

Seeing as I don't, then I say, yes, he gets in, but he'll have to wait, like Bruce Sutter wait, (nine years).

I agree with Kelsdad that his defense may make him have to wait longer than 5 years to get voted in. I am not even sure he was good at working with pitchers...haven't heard one way or the other.

Schalk played some of the dead ball years and was one of the honest White Sox in 1919....he even got into it with one of the pitchers who Schalk could tell was trying to lose.

I think it'll be interesting to see what happens with both Piazza and Jeff Kent when they come up for induction.

Both second base and catcher are primarily defensive positions, but the two are so good offensively that they'll eventually get in. I personally don't think it matters whether or not you're a first-ballot HOF.

Also, I hope Piazza goes in as a Met. I think he really should.

Piazza probably would choose to go in as a Met...He had an unusual stat with both Mets and Dodgers...he hit 40 homers and drove in 124 runs for Dodgers in 1997 then hit 40 homers and drove in 124 runs for Mets in 1999. He definitely won't go in as a Marlin since he batted only 18 times while with them.

piazza was a catcher, but not a good one, he could hit, but he was simply a first baseman put behind the plate, if he played first his whole career and stayed off the roids he wouldnt get in, but now he will

I'm sorry, where's your evidence that he's used steroids? And he obviously played well enough to stay at the position. But you're probably right...with powerhouses like Jason Phillips and Todd Zeile at first base, they couldn't possibly move him there.

This is Piazza's take on steroids from aol.com:

"There is a lot of swirling and a lot of innuendo, a lot of rumor, a lot of hearsay. And, I think, to get back to balance on a larger issue, Major League Baseball has sort of admitted and sort of acknowledged that there could have been abuse by some players in the past.

"It's kind of like going back and reinvestigating the Kennedy assassination. It's impossible to really put a finger on where it derailed and where it went wrong. And I think that everybody, in a sense, was realizing that someone--the people and the higher ups--were looking the other way. And some of the players didn't really acknowledge that it was so much of a bad stigma. And so, I think that just the fact of not dealing with it at the time was probably the biggest issue that I see at fault. But I think now people--and especially in Major League Baseball--they've acknowledged it and we have very strict testing now. They were just testing the other day."

You wanna know something ironic? Mike Piazza was 62nd round draft pick. I don't think many 62nd round draft picks get into the Hall of Fame. With Piazza's numbers, according to mlb.com, he'll be the first one to do so. 396 homers as a catcher (record, breaking Carlton Fisk's 351 a couple years ago), a .308 batting average, a .377 OBP, and a .545 SLG. With numbers like that, as a catcher, he's gotta be in the Hall of Fame. So what if he doesn't have great defensive numbers.

They definitely don't, especially since the draft only lasts a maximum of 50 rounds nowadays.

Not many people are taking this Mike Piazza retirement that seriously. Mike Piazza was one of, if not the best offensive catcher of ALL-TIME. There were a couple players in the '20s who were great, but Piazza has to be mentioned there as well. I say he's a first ballot Hall of Famer.

However, not many people agree with what I'm saying right now.

I think he deserves some recognition. (I think he's just not getting it because he didn't say he was going to retire before the offseason started)

Even if he was considered a very bad defensive catcher, I'd say he'll have to wait no more than 6 years (not 5, because I sorta changed my mind).

I'd vote for him on the first ballot if I was a voter. Of course it may depend on who else becomes eligible that year. Right now it looks like Clemens and Bonds will be eligible if they don't play again.

I'm a basketball guy with limited baseball knowledge, Niteowl049, but I am a Piazza fan and I think it would be a shame if he doesn't get elected into the MLB Hall of Fame. BTW: You are in a small group - with Romiezzo and Kelsdad - of really excellent baseball writers here at AGM and I look forward to your articles.

Piazza will be in, because of steroids. The reaction against the steroids users will open the door wide for a player like Piazza. He was a terrible catcher but was good enough offensively without having his name linked to steroids. I hate him and thinks he sucks, but he's in.

In the old days Varitek may have been in a shoo-in but nowadays voters look closer to offensive stats...From what I hear the defensive whiz Mazeroski had pals on the vets committee that helped vote him in. That is not a sure thing...just what I have read.
