Baseball Notebook: Harden, Brown Lead A's to 5-1 Win

vs.

Rich Harden (1-0) struck out nine Red Sox enroute to the Oakland A's defeating the Boston Red Sox 5-1. Emil Brown atoned for his baserunning gaffe yesterday by hitting a three run home run in the third inning that wound up being the difference in the win. Manny Ramirez hit a solo home run and drove in his fifth run of the year in the sixth inning that closed the gap at the time to 4-1. The A's scored an insurance run in the eighth inning when Jeff Fiorentino singled in Kurt Suzuki, who hit his second double of the game prior to Fiorentino coming to the plate.

Jon Lester (0-1) took the loss after giving up 4 runs and 5 hits in 4 innings. Harden started only four games last season and the A's need him to be healthy with the starting pitching questionable after him and Joe Blanton.

The A's have to be encouraged in the fact that they outscored the Red Sox 10-7 in the two game set in Japan. The A's were only a baserunning blunder yesterday away from tying or winning the game yesterday. The main concern of the A's right now has to be the top of the batting order with only Mark Ellis picking up a hit in the first two games among the first three hitters. Travis Buck, the leadoff man, is 0-10 this season and Ellis is 1 for 7 and Daric Barton is 0 for 5 this season giving the three players a combined 1 for 22 at the plate. However Barton has walked four times.

Recent Transactions

Evan Longoria was sent down earlier this week by the Tampa Bay Rays to Durham their Triple A team. If there was a player that I would think who would find himself on the opening day roster it was Longoria. His batting average this spring was only .262, but he hit 3 home runs, drove in 10 runs, had an OBP of .407, a slugging percentage of .595, and an OPS of 1.003. It is becoming apparent this spring it is not easy to make a team during spring training.

Last year, Ryan Braun and Hunter Pence had great springs, but still were sent down and only when they were called up later in the spring did they nail down a starting job in the majors. In transactions yesterday, the Chicago Cubs signed Reed Johnson who had been released by the Toronto Blue Jays. Johnson hit .236 last season and hit two home runs in 275 at bats. He will join Matt Murton as an extra outfielder for the Cubs this season. Yesterday, the Cubs sent down Eric Patterson and Sam Fuld who were battling to win a spot in the outfield, but the signing of Johnson speeded up their demise.

Josh Fields of the Chicago White Sox was sent down despite having a productive season last year when called up. Fields didn't homer in 41 at bats this spring, but Joe Crede didn't do much better. So, the White Sox went with the veteran at third base. Also Josh Barfield was sent down by the [[Cleveland Indians

Kaz Matsui was placed on the 15 day DL by the Houston Astros. He probably won't be back till the middle of April. Mark Loretta, a lifetime .298 hitter, should fill in while Matsui is out of action. In a major surprise, the Milwaukee Brewers released Claudio Vargas, who was 11-6 last season and 3-1 this spring. His 3.86 ERA this spring was much better than that of Jeff Suppan (9.17), Manny Parra (6.10), Chris Capuano (9.00), Ben Sheets (6.55), and Dave Bush at 6.43. Surely, they had decided earlier to release Vargas. Now he has less than a week to find another team. The Brewers were overstocked in starting pitchers, so they had to cut someone, but they should have cut Vargas at least a week or two ago.

The A's have placed Eric Chavez, Chad Gaudin, and Kiki Calero on the 15 day disabled list. Chavez may have had too many surgeries in one offseason, and Gaudin needs to return soon to give the starting rotation a veteran presence after Rich Harden and Joe Blanton. Nate McLouth was told yesterday that he has made the opening day roster of the Pittsburgh Pirates and will start in center on opening day. McLouth hit .311 this spring and slugged .622.

Shawn Estes has been sent down for reassignment after having a bad spring in which he gave up 15 runs and 21 hits in 11 innings, spelling the probable end of his career since he has pitched only 6 innings in the majors since the 2005 season. His spring ERA of 12.27 made it an easy decision for the San Diego Padres to reassign him. In the last few minutes, Brandon Moss has been sent down to Pawtucket after playing in the two games in Japan.

If there ever was a decimated pitching staff, it is that of the St. Louis Cardinals, who yesterday placed six pitchers on the 15 day disabled list. They have lost Chris Carpenter, Mark Mulder, Matt Clement, Joel Pineiro, Tyler Johnson, and Josh Kinney; some of these pitchers will be out a lot longer than 15 days. The first four names would make a strong rotation. It is now looking like Juan Encarnacion, who also was placed on the disabled list, may not play baseball again after a serious eye injury last season.

Wow. Brandon Moss got sent down. I can't say I'm surprised. It was either him or Jacoby, and I know they're gonna keep Jacoby.

Jacoby has too much of an upside to send him down instead of Moss.

I know. He's got a bigger hype, and IMO, more potential. However, Brandon Moss wouldn't be bad as an outfielder either.

We probably won't see Moss again unless there is an injury that puts an outfielder on DL.

I don't understand why the Astros got Matsui. Loretta is a hitting machine that had to play behind Everett and Biggio and instead of letting him play everyday they signed Matsui. Burke thought he was going to replace Biggio too but it wasn't meant to be.

Mark Loretta is 36 right now. I know that his stats are going to drop. I remember when he played for the Padres; those were his best years. Then his stats started to decline, as you could tell by looking at his batting averages. They dropped from .300 to around .280. He's aging, and that's why they signed Kaz Matsui, a member of the National League Champs last year, who has got something to prove.

Longoria was only sent down because of his contract. If he were to start this season he would be eligable for free agency a year earlier. The club has made it clear that they were happy with his play, but it was obvious from the start that Longoria didn't even have a prayer no matter how well he could play. Evan has been the ultimate professional about the entire situation, he is not taking it like an imature kid but with the attitude of a seasoned veteran. In the end, the only thing getting hurt is Evan's pockets...

Remember what a strong spring Ryan Braun had last season? He still started the season in the minors even though the Brewers needed a third baseman at the time.

Braun and Pence dominated the spring stats last year and still didn't win jobs. Maybe they were kept down for money reasons like Longoria.

Exactly. It all comes down to money, always does and always will. Baseball is the greatest sport ever but the MLB is a business and every choice they makes depends on money. Even when it comes down to something else like image, they are trying to create an image to make people trust them and spend more money. It is very clever how professional leagues pull us away from seeing the leagues not as a business. It always comes across so innocently, it's about the fans and about the game. For the owners and executives it is all about the mighty dollar...

Falcon...you are exactly right...That is why they are trying to get baseball going in China so MLB will make even more money. We may near the end of seeing rookies make the team in spring training especially the best of the best rookies. In a month or two they will start trickling back and probably win a spot in the starting nine players.

It's not like most great players get some seasoning in AAA before hitting the bigs. longoria will be better off for not jumping right in.

If he came out flat or had a tough start it could have stunted his confidence and long term development.

BIG DIFFERENCE between looking good in Spring Training and producing in the bigs... two months will make a huge difference.

Here is a list of things that are better to do than watch that God aweful ESPN:
  • Walk in on parents having sex
  • Gamble away your rent money
  • Get stabbed
  • Get left at the altar
  • Fall face first in dog poop
  • Find a dead body
  • Have the guys in the bar find out your wife left you for another woman.
  • Fall asleep and your wife cuts off your penis and then throws it out a car window
  • Live in Russia
  • Get burried alive
  • Find out the girl you like turns out to be a man

Doing the recaps help me keep up better with baseball. Before the internet we were all at the mercy of whatever baseball our local papers had in that day's paper. The worst thing about Sportscenter is that they show a little baseball, a little basketball, a little auto racing then a few minutes later go back to baseball...it is a discombobulated mess...I do like Baseball Tonight since it is all baseball.

I think it's a matter of the front office treating their stars with kid gloves, which I don't think is always a good thing. Take someone like Longoria. How does it hurt the Rays to have Longoria up in the bigs taking cuts, trying to prove himself instead of Willy Aybar and Eric Hinske who've already proven they suck? I would think the more time you can get a guy in the Majors, the better off he will be.

They say these guys aren't ready, but, going back to Longoria, the best way to get him ready is to have him face big league pitching. Not to mention he hit .313 with 3 home runs in spring training.

Longoria had an OPS of over 1.000...not many major leaguers do that in a season. Willy Aybar gave Bobby Cox fits in Atlanta not even showing up for games sometimes.

As Manny and Falcon both have mentioned, Longoria has an escalation clause in his contract which makes him eligible for free agency after his second full ML season. The Rays will not promote him until after May 1st, because he will not have been on the 25 man roster for the full season. By having him in the minors for 30 days, the Rays essentially gain a full calendar season of Longoria's services without worrying about free agency.

Is he ML ready now? No doubt. Is the reason he is in the minors now financial? Again, no doubt.

Will his being in the minors for the first month make the difference between 70 wins and 80 wins? Well, with Kazmir on the DL already and no one else on the roster with Longoria's power potential, (you really think Carlos Pena will hit 46 dingers again?) then the answer is again, no doubt.

Kelsdad...this financial maneuvering is not good for baseball. So it is unlikely that we will see Longoria in majors till he has been in minors for 30 days no matter what he does down there. I look for Pena to be good again but not 46 home runs good. Pitchers will be adjusting when they pitch to him. Like you wrote Longoria has nothing else to prove and is ready for the majors. I know it is only spring training but when a player has an OPS of over 1.000 anytime that player is special.
