Baseball Notebook: Grandson Wins First Start

Matthew my grandson won his first start in his first year of live arm pitching. He pitched 2 innings and struck out 6 batters while walking 9. He made a great play on the first pitch of the game when the batter hit a comebacker to him. He was falling away to the other side of the mound but recovered in time to retire the batter.

Matthew said he hit the other team's pitcher and that same pitcher tried to hit Matthew when he batted. He may have been wild but by end of the season I hope the wildness has been corralled and he can pitch even better as the season goes on.

Here is a clip of the first play of the game taken by his father with a video camera:

He had never pitched before since they used pitching machine the last two years. His team won 13-8 so that is main thing. Would do a longer post but have worked 17 of the last 24 hours and have another 9 hour shift in 5 hours.

It is tearing me up being 673 miles away from where he is playing down in Louisiana. Last year I went to all his practices and all his games and now will probably miss all of his games.

Nice that he's already showing skills...drilling the other team's pitcher, for example. Way to go, Matt, show 'em all who's boss!

Sounds like he has a hell of a career ahead of him. So what if he beamed a batter he was crowding the plate. Congrats to you. You have every right to be a proud grandfather.

AL pitchers can drill all the batters they want. They just let the other team's pitcher drill the DH.

Most of all Matthew has fun...you could tell at the end of the clip he was ready to throw the ball as soon as he got it back.

You're right. But it sometimes isn't. Especially when you're getting paid.

Yup, to professionals it is a job. Very stressful for them knowing that their livelihood depends on their performance...

We made the mistake of following my daughter and son in law and family to Tennessee last August and they moved back three weeks later and we were stuck because we had already started our lease with apartment plus my 93 year dad is about 80 miles away so we decided to stay plus our house had been foreclosed so we had no home to go back to....Main thing is that Matthew is playing baseball and having fun. Like some of the commenters wrote playing professional baseball is more stressful because the players are playing not only for themselves but for the financial future of their family.

That's the main thing: for Matthew to have fun. Let him worry about his financial future 7-8 years from now. ;) Who knows? Maybe a team could draft him. You never know what can happen...

A player can only do so much then it comes down to being seen by a scout and what they think of him as a player.
