Baseball Notebook: Grandson Makes All Stars

My grandson Matthew made the 9 year old All Stars in Dixie Youth baseball in Tioga, Louisiana. He played shortstop, third base, catcher and pitcher during the season but they used him in center field in a practice game as his All Star team gets ready for the tournament. He told me on phone last night that he is fielding well and throwing well in center field. He also said he hit a ball to where he stands in center field. His coach is former major league pitcher Kevin McGehee who pitched for the Orioles.

Earlier in the season he wasn't hitting that well but right before All Stars were picked he started making contact consistently and he was hitting a lot of balls to the outfield. The sad part is that he probably won't get much playing time since most of the team that went to second place in the state tournament is on this year's team so he probably won't get to play much if any.

Still it was a great accomplishment for him to make the team and there is still a small chance he will play so well in practice that he might get to play some in the tournament. The saddest thing is that I will miss all of his games since I am 673 miles away in Tennessee.

Matthew is pictured in my profile at ArmchairGM.com.

On behalf of AGM, I would like to congratulate your grandson, Niteowl. I've read thoroughly about how well Matthew does in your articles. I've also seen videos. He's pretty darn good for a 9 year old. Way to go Matthew! Make your grandfather proud!

He will do well if he gets the chance to play. He will have fun and doesn't mind practicing a long time even if he doesn't get to play in the tournament.

That's great. I have previously coached a a Junior league team (ages 12-15), and there were a couple of kids who I enjoyed coaching the most. After practice was over, the other coach and I would let them go to the outfield so we could hit some fly balls to them. Just hearing it from them that they'd stay was amazing, and I could tell they were willing to learn. Practice makes perfect, and prcatice does get you places, eventually.

When I used to practice with Matthew I was the one that wanted to stop first. He would even try to catch balls after it was dark. Practice does make perfect and he practiced by throwing balls up in the air and catching them if nobody was around to practice with. Best of all he is hitting the ball and making contact most of the time.

Wow, when I was nine years old I still couldn't make contact with the ball off a tee...Congratulations to your Grandson!

This is Matthew's sixth season at the age of 9. He started playing organized baseball at 4. He misses me not being there to practice with.
