Gabe Gross Unlikely Hero In Rays Walkoff Win

Gabe Gross probably the most unlikely candidate on the Rays to hit a walkoff single did just that last night as the Rays defeated the Yankees in eleven innings by a 2-1 score. Edwin Jackson pitched seven innings of scoreless baseball as he dueled with Chien-Ming Wang who also pitched very well and allowed one run in seven innings. The win gave the Rays sole possession of first place with a half game lead over the Red Sox and was their sixth consecutive win.

Gross who was traded to the Rays for Josh Butler a pitcher in the Florida State League with a 0-2 record and a 6.35 ERA at the time of the trade. It is not a good sign when you are in the majors and are traded for a A ball pitcher with a losing record.

However after ending the month of April hitting .186 he has hit .292 in May and raised his average to .220 while with the Rays. He hit .209 for the Brewers with no homers and 2 runs batted in while batting 43 times.

In his last two starts Jackson has pitched 15 innings of scoreless baseball. In the three starts this season in which Jackson hasn't received a decision he has given up one run in 22 innings. So he has pitched a lot better than his 2-3 record indicates.

To make the win even more special they defeated one of the best closers in baseball history in Mariano Rivera. Even with the Yankees in town only 16,558 fans braved the 72 degree weather to see the game leaving 27,214 empty seats.

Gabe Gross has done for the Rays what he was asked to do.

Nothing about how the Rays are the ONLY AL East team with a winning record in the division???

Nothing about how they are only ONE win shy of the Tampa Pro Sports record for consecutive wins (12, by the AFL Storm)???

Nothing referencing Johnny Gomes stealing second off Mo to set up the winning run?

NOTHING about Percival blowing the save-to-preserve-the-shutout in the ninth?

Not even an obligatory reminder of the Spring Training brawl?

It was 80 degrees (outside) in St Petersburg yesterday at game time. The 72 degrees was the inside-the-dome temp! Ha ha!

And I think your capacity attendance figures include about 8,000 seats which are closed off, tarped over and not for sale this season. A "sell out" is around 36,000 even though there are theoretically almost 44,000 places to put a keester.

I had a problem with blogger.com so had to end the article where it ended. When I hit the keys nothing would type then I restarted and it worked for awhile then stopped again so had to type the other articles in Word format. It was a great day for the Rays. They showed yesterday they are for real this year. You called it before the season started and most people didn't have that much faith in them.

I find it hard to believe that this will last. It's a nice story, but I won't believe the Yanks or Sox are out of the picture until the 162nd game is played and neither team is at the top of the standings. Kudos to the Rays - they're playing excellent baseball.

If the Rays beat the Yankees today Hank Steinbrenner is going to get involved with what is going on with the team in the field. He may tell Joe Girardi he wants Joba in the rotation now and not later.
