Baseball Notebook: Frank Thomas: Class Act

Frank Thomas: Class Act

We need more players like Frank Thomas in baseball. While other players were refusing to talk to Mitchell investigators Thomas was the only player to voluntarily talk to them. He also ripped the Player's Association for telling them not to talk to investigators. Thomas said he did not want to be on the "Did Not Talk to Mitchell" list and have that stain on his career.

It is scary to think what Thomas could have done on steroids with his power, but he was smart enough to avoid them. Thomas should be a lock for the Hall of Fame despite having only 2409 hits going into the 2008 season. He will turn 40 in May, and with 513 home runs, he may never reach the 600 home run mark.

Spring Training News

David Ortiz has recovered from knee surgery after the World Series. This is not good news for AL East opponents. Ortiz played with the knee injury most of last season, but still hit 35 home runs. So his numbers should be even better now that he is healthy. Hunter Pence found out that it is not easy to walk through a closed sliding glass door and was cut up, but he is not expected to miss much time in spring training due to the injuries. It will be interesting to see how Pence does in his first full major league season.

Miguel Tejada will be a huge offensive upgrade for the Astros at shortstop. Adam Everett hit 64 points lower than Tejada. His .281 OBP was 76 points lower than Tejada's .357, and Tejada outslugged Everett .442 to .318, but it was the lowest slugging percentage for Tejada since 1999. Everett's fielding will be missed, but Tejada should make up for it with increased offensive production in 2008.

Juan Gonzalez is getting a chance to play for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2008. He is in the Cardinals camp trying to play for the first time since 2005 when he was injured after his only at bat with the Indians. Gonzalez will be 38 all season since his 39th birthday won't be until October. Reports out of camp say he is bashing the ball and is the first player on field for workouts. Surprisingly, Gonzalez is very politically aware. He memorized the names of all 78 mayors in Puerto Rico and even knows about the work of President Harry Truman, who left office in 1953.

The Atlanta Braves' training camp will be more interesting than usual with the Braves looking for a replacement for Andruw Jones. Mark Kotsay may have the inside track to replace Jones, but a good spring by one of the young Braves' outfielders like Jordan Shafer could make Kotsay a fourth outfielder.

Thomas at times had a rocky relationship with the White Sox but not once was he ever suspected for using PEDs.

Tyrone, thanks for confirming that Thomas did have rocky relationship with White Sox. I was thinking there was some bad blood involved between him and the White Sox but he gave the White Sox some great years. His injury filled seasons may have kept him from having 600 home runs.

Thomas had some pretty rough incidents with Sox management over the years. Perhaps the worst involved a clause in his contract which stipulated that Reinsdorf could reduce his salary if performance was less than expected (how the hell that one snuck past the union, I'll never know). Around that time, the Big Unit had an injury (torn triceps I believe) and told the team he couldn't play. They thought he could. David Wells (on the team at the team) called out Thomas and it turned into a real shit storm. After finally being evaluated by a competent medical facility/staff, it was revealed he had a full tear and required surgery. He also had more than a few beefs with GM Kenny Williams which inevitably led to his departure to Oakland (where he had a pretty good year). When it is all said and done, Frank will be welcomed back to the Sox for his retirement/number set to pasture, etc. but it was not all fun and roses for either him or the team during his tenure.

Now, onto my thoughts about the article. PLEASE tell me that Hunter Pence isn't going to be the outfield version of Kerry Wood. I honestly think that Miguel Tejada as a replacement for Adam Everett is a pretty good idea. Defense isn't the thing that they should be working on, as everyone knows that it is offense and driving in runs that is what the Astros need to work on the most. Now, will Tejada do well with them? Probably. He will probably hit a lot more doubles/homers now that he is playing in Minute Maid Park half the time, where the left field wall is about 330 feet away from home plate. We'll see if it is an upgrade on the Astros' offense or not...

Honestly, with the quality of the NL Central, the amount of improvement that would be involved to get the Astros into contention is probably minimal...

Yeah, that's true. But you've gotta admit, it's hard to top what the Chicago Cubs may bring to the table. It seems like they'll have everything come together in the beginning of the season this year.

A few years ago, SI put the Cubs on the cover as their pick to win the WS.

They were not even close.

I'm a Cubs fan but even I am not yet buying the hype of this year's squad.

Romi, you are right the Astros do need some offense to go with Carlos Lee and Lance Berkman. If Pence and Tejada do as well or better than last season they would have four sluggers in the lineup everyday to make up for some of the light hitters.

Biggio will never die. He lives on! Biggio for President is what I say. Isn't he going to be a coach or something?

When a team doesn't win a World Series for 100 years it it hard to take them seriously. Cardinals and Yankees have won 36 World Series since 1923 so seems like Cubs are doomed to failure...shame because they have some of best fans in baseball.

Like Tylersalt wrote it wouldn't take much for Astros to be contender in 2008. They have to have better pitching though...Last year Oswalt was only one to win more than 10 games with 14 wins. Next was Wandy Rodriguez with 9-13...Woody Williams...8-15...Chris Sampson...7-8 and Matt Albers 4-11. They did pick up the best closer in baseball in Jose Valverde with 47 saves but with this starting staff he may not see much action.

I think that if the Astros get a good offense, Oswalt will pick a few more wins, maybe even become a 20 game winner. It has happened before in his career. The Astros just need to score some runs.

For years, Mariotti ridiculed Thomas as being "The Big Skirt" and badgered Reinsdorf endlessly to ship him out of town. Of course when Frank did leave for Oakland, Mariotti quickly changed tunes and blasted the Sox for letting him go. Legendary flip-flop indeed.

If Frank had done roids, just take the 1994 short season and double it, but he didn't and he never needed it. Sure Frank pissed me off from time to time, but he was the man and he helped bring the Sox out of the gutter of the late 80's and made this team a competitor.

In a couple of years that #35 will be put out with the other Sox greats.

Jay Marriotti can go eat it.

Like Tyrone said the Cubs fans are the best. They deserve a winning team. There are too many Cubs fans dying without ever seeing a world championship team.

Biggio and Thomas used to lead in longevity with one team and now one is out of baseball and the other is on his third team. Both of them should be in Hall of Fame someday.
