Baseball Notebook: Cubs Win 10,000th Game

The Cubs won their 10,000th game in dramatic fashion with 28 year old Ryan Theriot singling in the winning run in the 10th inning to give the Cubs a 7-6 victory over the Rockies. After waiting 132 years for the big win the Cubs figured it wouldn't hurt for them to wait one more inning. Theriot was born 104 years after the first Cubs win. The win took Kerry Wood (2-0) off the hook when he blew the save in the bottom of the ninth tying the game. Derrek Lee and Geovany Soto both had 4 hits in the contest.
Rangers Blow 5-0 Lead in Tigers 19-6 Romp
Kenny Rogers had his fourth bad start in a row but it didn't matter since the Tigers overcame a five run deficit to come back and overpower the Rangers by a 19-6 score. It was ironic that the Tigers broke loose on the same day that Curtis Granderson returned to the lineup.
The Tigers scored eleven times in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Carlos Guillen who had only 6 runs batted in coming into the game drove in 5 to lead the Tiger offense. This is the kind of offense that was expected of the Tigers after they acquired Miguel Cabrera who hit his 5th homer of the season. Tigers are a game and a half behind the second place Twins after the win.
Angels Defeat Red Sox 6-4 Behind the Hitting of Gary Matthews
Gary Matthews Jr. homered twice to lead the Angels to a 6-4 win over the Red Sox. Casey Kotchman hit his 6th home run of the season in his 20th game of the season after hitting 11 in 137 games last season. He didn't hit his 6th home run till June 4th last season. Jon Garland (3-2) took the win for the Angels. David Ortiz continued his hot streak hitting his 3rd homer and in his last six games he has hit 2 homers and drove in 14 runs. In the first 16 games of the season he had one homer and 4 RBI's.
Tampa Bay Rays Come From Behind To Post 5-3 Win over the Blue Jays
Evan Longoria drove in 2 of the 5 runs by the Rays in the 5-3 win last night against the Blue Jays. Jason Hammel (2-1) out-pitched veteran Roy Halladay (2-3). The win was the second in a row for the Rays and kept them within a game and a half of the third place Yankees.
Mussina Pitches Yankees to 6-4 Win Over White Sox Despite Giving Up Two Homers
Mike Mussina (2-3) pitched seven strong innings only allowing 2 runs and 4 hits. Two of those hits were solo homers by Carlos Quentin and Joe Crede. Jorge Posada was 4 for 5 for the Yankees and drove in 2 runs.
Gaudin Takes 3-0 Shutout Win Over the Twins
Chad Gaudin, Alan Embree and Huston Street combined to shutout the Twins in Oakland. Mike Sweeney hit his first homer of the season to lead the offense. Emil Brown drove in his 17th run of the season. Brown leads the A's in RBI's with Bobby Crosby next with 15. Brown has struck out only 7 times in 72 at bats but has only walked twice.
Orioles Move To Within 2 Games of Yankees By Edging the Mariners By 3-2 Score
Daniel Cabrera (2-0) finally seems to be harnessing his control. In his first game this season he walked 5 batters but since then he has walked 4 batters then 3 batters and 2 batters and then last night he walked no batters. Last season he led the majors in walks with 108. The win kept them close to the second place Yankees and first place Red Sox. Not many fans expected the Orioles to be in second place. They are 2-1 against the Yankees this season but won't play the Red Sox till next month.
Marlins Take 7-2 Win From Braves: Ramirez and Jacobs Hit 7th Homers
The Braves outhit the Marlins 12-11 but they weren't able to get the timely hitting when they needed it. Hanley Ramirez and Mike Jacobs both hit their 7th homer of the season and both finished the game with 17 RBI's on the year. Andrew Miller (1-2) took the win by giving up 9 hits but only allowed one earned run to cross the plate. The Marlins made 3 errors in the contest. The fourth place Braves lost their second in a row while the Marlins gained a game on the Phillies, Braves and Nationals.
Pirates Overcome 4-0 Deficit to Defeat Cardinals 7-4
The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning but never scored again as the Pirates defeated the Cardinals 7-4. Jason Bay hit a two run homer in the fifth inning to tie the game at 4-4. The Pirates climbed to fifth place in the NL Central passing the Reds and are only a half game behind the Astros.
Astros Pound Reds 9-3
Chris Sampson (1-2) allowed 2 runs in 7 innings to take the 9-3 win over the Reds. Sampson had lasted only 2/3 of an inning in his last start against the Rockies while giving up 6 runs. Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 597th career homer in the game. Hunter Pence was 3 for 4 and has raised his average from .161 on April 16th to .256 after the game yesterday. He has 10 hits in his last 22 times at bat.
Santana Pitches, Hits Mets To 7-2 Win Over the Nationals
Johan Santana (3-2) pitched seven strong innings while allowing 2 runs and hit two doubles and walked to lead the Mets to a 7-2 win yesterday. Tim Redding (3-2) drove in the only two runs for the Nationals with a double. This game proved why the National League doesn't use the DH because with hitters like Santana and Redding they don't need it. They hit three doubles combined and were 3 for 4. Carlos Beltran was the only other position player in the game to have an extra base hit when he hit a double.
Fielder Powers Brewers to 5-4 Win: Utley Hits 10th Homer in Loss
Ned Yost was booed last night in Miller Park for leaving Dave Bush in the game too long after he blew a 3-0 lead and let the Phillies take a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning. Prince Fielder hit a two run homer in the bottom of the eighth to give the Brewers the 5-4 win which was saved by Derrick Turnbow for Turnbow's first save in a year.
Chase Utley hit his 10th homer of the season and his 7th homer in his last 7 games but in one of those games he hit two homers so it is not a consecutive streak. He has driven in 12 runs in that time span and has raised his batting average from .310 to .368.
Giants Defeat Padres in 13 Innings 3-2: Fred Lewis Singles in Lead Run
Fred Lewis singled in the lead run in the top of the 13th inning to give the Giants a 2-1 lead then Aaron Rowand singled in an insurance run which was needed since the Padres scored in the bottom of the 13th with the Giants winning 3-2.
Bengie Molina had homered earlier in the ninth inning to tie the game. Trevor Hoffman gave up the homer and blew his second save of the season. It is early in the season but the Padres have to be concerned about Hoffman having an 8.22 ERA. Greg Maddux pitched 7 innings of shutout baseball while Matt Cain pitched 7 innings of one run ball for the Giants. The game lasted 3 hours and 51 minutes which isn't that long for a 13 inning game. The Padres third loss in a row gave them the longest current losing streak in the NL.
Dodgers Post Easy 8-3 Win Over the Diamondbacks
Derek Lowe (2-1) out-pitched Dan Haren (3-1) as the Dodgers posted an easy 8-3 win over the Diamondbacks. James Loney and Chin-Lung Hu both drove in two runs for the Dodgers. Hu has already broken a major league record with the shortest last name in major league history. Ed Ott and Mel Ott held the old record.
The Diamondbacks are the only winning team in the NL West with the Dodgers and Rockies tied for second place and already are 6 games back of the Diamondbacks.
