Baseball Notebook: Barry "Balco" Bonds 756th Home Run Ball in Hall of Fame

by Niteowl049
created July 02, 2008, last edited April 04, 2009

Vote

Barry "Balco" Bonds has stated in the past that he doesn't want to be in the Baseball Hall of Fame if his 756th "Asterisk" ball is displayed, and now the Hall of Fame has called his bluff and will have it on display as soon as the exhibit can be set up.

Whether Bonds will even have a chance to reject admission to the Baseball Hall of Fame remains to be seen since he is not a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame, and if he is sentenced to prison for perjury before the Balco grand jury, he will have even less chance of being admitted. If he does go to prison and is admitted to the Hall of Fame, I think Pete Rose should be admitted.

Marc Ecko, who sold the ball for $752,467, had the asterisk added after an internet vote by fans that chose that option for the ball. The other two options were to donate it to the Hall of Fame without the asterisk or blast the ball into outer space.

Bonds called Ecko an idiot for branding the ball with an asterisk, but Ecko, who has his own clothing line that makes a billion dollars annually, really didn't care what Bonds wanted done with the ball and went ahead with the asterisk branding.

In 2013, Hall of Fame voters will be voting on Bonds admittance if his name is on the ballot. That would depend on whether he plays again or not. If he is voted in and is in prison, he would be the first Hall of Fame inductee to make his speech from a prison cell.

Sonnanstine, Kazmir Anchor Tampa Bay Rays Pitching Staff

Starting Rotation

Not many baseball fans would have thought that Andy Sonnanstine (9-3) would have the best record on the Tampa Bay Rays' pitching staff after having a 6-10 season with the Rays last year. He has beaten some very good teams this season, with wins over the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs, and Florida Marlins, and won his first start of the season against the New York Yankees. He has not given up more than 3 runs in his last seven starts.

Surprisingly, he has given up 21 more hits than innings pitched this season and finished last season with 21 more hits than innings pitched, but that doesn't matter that much with the Rays' offense hitting the way they have been this season.

Scott Kazmir (7-3) didn't even start his first game this season until May 4th, and that makes Rays fans wonder how far the Rays would have been ahead of the Boston Red Sox if Kazmir hadn't missed 6 or 7 starts. Kazmir didn't allow a home run until his sixth start of the season. Opposing hitters are hitting only .192 against Kazmir, and he is even better when pitching with runners in scoring position, as the other teams hit only .163 against him in that situation.

Matt Garza (7-4) was 5-7 after 15 starts with the Minnesota Twins in 2007, but in 15 starts this year, he is 7-4. He pitched his best game of the season in his most important start of the season when he held the Boston Red Sox scoreless last night.

James Shields (6-5) has pitched better than his record indicates. In two seperate starts against the Yankees, he gave up a total of 4 runs in 12 innings yet lost both games. He gave up one run in 6 innings against the White Sox and had a no decision. The stat that really stands out is that Shields has had 12 starts in which he gave up one or less walks with 4 starts with no walks.

Edwin Jackson (4-6) won his first two starts of the season against the Yankees and Seattle Mariners. Since then, he has been 2-6. He has given up 4 or more runs in 7 starts. In 3 of those starts, he gave up 6 runs. Jackson has won one game since May 24th. To his credit, Jackson pitched 22 innings in three consecutive starts against the Toronto Blue Jays, Yankees, and Cardinals and only allowed only one earned run but received three no decisions in those games. Earlier this season, he pitched 7 innings against the Red Sox and allowed one run but again received a no decision. So, he could easily be 8-6 with any kind of run support in those games.

Bullpen

J.P. Howell (6-0) has been the most solid performer out of the bullpen. Last season, he was 1-6 and was 5-14 lifetime before starting this season. He has pitched 51 innings, both last season and so far this season. He gave up 69 hits in 51 innings last season, but in 51 innings this season, he has given up only 36 hits. So he has given up an amazing 33 less hits in the same number of innings as last year.

Kurt Birkins (0-0) and Grant Balfour (2-0) have pitched a combined 26 innings and have allowed 3 runs and 11 hits.

Dan Wheeler (2-3) has an impressive 1.88 ERA and has only lost once since April 16th. He has the same identical 1.88 ERA this season against both lefthanders and righthanders.

Jason Hammel (3-3) was 3-11 combined in his first two seasons with the Rays. He has a negative stat of having an 8.79 ERA when runners are in scoring position against him, but also has a positive stat in that he has a 1.59 ERA in late innings of close games.

Scott Dohmann (2-0) has a winning record but has a team worst 6.14 ERA, but those two wins have came against the Red Sox showing he can beat the best teams despite the high ERA. Unfortunately for Dohmann, he was sent back to the Minors when Al Reyes returned from the disabled list.

Speaking of Al Reyes (1-2), he had an ERA of 10.38 in April before being placed on the disabled list. He returned to the bullpen on May 14th and had given up only 2 runs in his last eleven appearances before returning to the disabled list but may be returning again soon.

Troy Percival 1-0 is pitching for his fourth different team in the last four years and has pitched well for the Rays with 19 saves in 21 chances. Percival allowed no runs in his first 11 appearances of the season. His May ERA was 5.11 and his June ERA was 5.40. Percival was placed on the 15 day disabled list yesterday, so the Rays will have to decide who will fill the closer spot till he returns.

Around the Bases

Note: Due to the extremely long time it takes to do recaps of 15 games on most days, I am going to write a more general recap of the most important events from the games and other baseball news. It was taking over three hours to do the recaps and look up stats. I am sorry to have to cut back on the recaps but hope the new format will be of interest to the readers. There will be no article tomorrow due to out of town trip for post surgery checkup.

The Rays are the best team in the Majors now, as they posted their 51st win, and are the only team with a winning percentage over .600 with a .614 mark.

The Rays, Detroit Tigers, and Minnesota Twins are the best teams over the last ten games with 8-2 records.

No NL West team has a winning record in their last ten games, and the San Diego Padres are the worst team in their last ten games with a 1-9 record. The Los Angeles Dodgers are 5 games under .500 and only 2 1/2 games behind the first place Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Chicago White Sox have the longest current winning streak in the Majors with 6 consecutive wins.

Ian Kinsler is the new batting average leader in the AL with a .324 average.

Rich Harden has allowed more than 3 runs in a game only once this season.

Richie Sexson had 5 homers and 16 RBI's at the end of April, but since then, he had only 4 homers and 5 RBI's in May, and had no homers and 5 RBI's in the month of June before hitting his 10th homer of the season yesterday. In his first two seasons, he had a total of 73 homers, but in the 2007 season and so far this season he only has 31 homers.

Kyle Kendrick (8-3) has only lost once since April 16th, and that loss was to the Red Sox.

Peter Gammons predicted last night that Lance Berkman will win the NL Triple Crown this season. He is only one homer behind the NL home run leaders and is tied for the NL RBI lead. He is close enough to Chipper Jones to have a chance at winning the batting title.

Edinson Volquez has allowed only 4 homers in 104 innings this season after allowing 4 homers in 34 innings last year.

Randy Johnson (4-7) lost his sixth start last night in his loss to the Milwaukee Brewers and has not won since May 18th. His May ERA was 3.19, his June ERA was 6.82, and after his first start in July his July ERA is 17.18. Last night's game was the third of his last four starts in which he allowed 7 earned runs. He also gave up 3 homers in a game for the first time this season last night.

Best Pitching Matchups:

Daisuke Matsuzaka (9-1) against Scott Kazmir (7-3)

Dana Eveland (6-5) against Joe Saunders (11-4)

OK, I'm just going to vent here.

Barry Bonds is irrelevant. The Rays are in first place, the article is very detailed to some of the reasons why, and the lead-in (title) is about a facking $25 baseball that some moron paid $752,000 for? Even Barry doesn't care about the ball, and we shouldn't care about Barry.

Totally understandable, Niteowl, on your decision to scale back a bit. It's better to mention all the games, but maybe focus your attention on one or two games or plays which stood out. I totally support your decision.

Kelsdad...thanks for the support of the decision to scale back. I would love to do recaps of all the games since it helps me keep up better with baseball myself but I found myself speeding up at the end just to finish which diminished the quality of the recaps since the recaps at the end were shorter sometimes.

JuTM...you are probably right about Bonds. He may not even spend a day in prison. His ego may be what keeps him from getting in the Hall of Fame. He couldn't stand being second fiddle to McGwire. He may have been out of baseball years ago without the steroids since his home run totals were dropping when he discovered the fountain of youth at the Balco Laboratory and found better living through chemistry.

not that I will defend bonds, but can you blame him for not wanting to be second fiddle to McGwire? He was a HOFer in the making in 1998. He was a player that you'd beg for your team to sign. But, like they always say, chicks dig the long ball. McGwire was caught with Steroids and no one cared. He was still hitting amazing home runs, and that's what mattered. He was a far superior player than McGwire was, but because he wasn't hitting a Home Run almost every other game, no one cared. That's why Bonds started doing roids.

If Lance Berkman wins the NL Triple Crown, that would be quite an achievement, considering the last NL TC was Joe Medwick in 1937. I hope that the Braves (sorry, Niteowl) are the tonic the Phils need to get their crap together and start winning games again. It's been pretty irritating seeing the scores for them the past couple of weeks.

I appreciate your effort on explaining the Rays pitching staff to the world, but you're essentially doing what the entire national media has done - PROVING you don't know what you're talking about.

It's nice to regurgitate stats but if you don't know what you're saying maybe it's best to say nothing.

It's insulting to REAL Rays fans and insulting to the players that you're just spewing nonsense about them.

Want examples?

Sonnanstine: "that doesn't matter that much with the Rays' offense hitting the way they have been this season." - The Rays HAVEN'T been hitting well yet this season!!!

Jackson: "he could easily be 8-6 with any kind of run support in those games." - See? Now you've completely contradicted yourself - because the Rays HAVEN'T been hitting well (yet)

Kazmir: AS "great" as his numbers say he's been any Rays fan will tell you he's prone to allowing the big inning in the middle of every game. Maddon lets him fight through it, because he's Kaz but it's concerning. Eventually one big inning turns to two.

Matt Garza's best game of the season was the start BEFORE the Red Sox game when he struck out 10 and only gave up one hit against the Marlins.

JP Howell - "He has pitched 51 innings, both last season and so far this season." - He was a starter last year. If you were paying attention to the Rays, you would still shudder when you think about it.

Birkins and Balfour in the same breath????? How DARE you???? Birkins sucks donkey balls and Balfour has been amazing. It's sentences like that which can get you booed heartily in my house!

Scott Dohmann sucks - "he was sent back to the Minors when Al Reyes returned from the disabled list." Yeah, and Al Reyes has been on the DL again since Dohmann went down. And Mitch Talbot (who just was called up whenPercival went to the DL) will go down when Reyes gets back. Dohmann got his wins thanks to walkoffs, not because of anything he did...

Where's Trever "Don't call me Casey Fossum" Miller??? He's Maddon's favorite pinch pitcher! Where's Gary "Gasoline" Glover? These two guys are vital in Maddon's systematic bullpen approach.

The rest of what you said was simply statistical regurgitation.

It's nice that everybody wants to be a Rays fan now but to just throw stats out there isn't saying anything of worth. Besides this team is a statistical anomaly. They aren't winning games on stats. They are winning it on timely hits, awesome defense, taking walks, smart baserunning and believing in themselves.

They are playing like a team. No one individual is carrying the club - EVERYONE is adding their effort to the cause.

They have a bunch guys that deserve an All-Star nod this year (Navarro, Upton, Shields, Sonnanstine, Longoria, Iwamura) but I bet Crawford and Kaxmir go instead...

Don't mean to sound so harsh, Niteowl. Yes, I get VERY defensive of the things I love and how they get misinterpreted and mauled over by shortsighted analysis but any monkey with a keyboard can spew stats - it would be nice if you read into them a little more... there's ALWAYS more to what's going on than the numbers say.

And it's going to be a while before I forgive you for lumping Birkins and Balfour together...

Really?

I just checked the Rays organizational org chart, and it's funny, I didn't see your name anywhere. You're not a hitting instructor, (all you know about hitting is you couldn't), you're not in player development, nothing. So, who are you to say the Rays "haven't started hitting yet"?

Rays rank sixth in runs per game and runs scored, their team BA is above the league average, they are fifth in OBP and slugging, lead in stolen bases by a mile, and lead the American League in runs scored on the road.

I love your enthusiasm my friend, but you better stop talking to us all like we're fucking stupid.

How is what you said any different than what he said? I don't get it. And not for nothing, this is an opinion based site, (go figure).

As a chef, everything I've done in the last thirty years has been critiqued, 99.9% of it good, but to be successful I can't take the negatives personally.

There was no need to rip his article apart. Everyone here knows and appreciates and respects your connection to the Rays and your fanship, but you are far from an authority, (Barry Bonds, Brian Giles?). Anyone can go to whatever various Rays related blogs and websites and get the same info, you're not scooping us with any of it.

It would be a much more interesting fight with you if you actually READ what I wrote - NiteOwl didn't offer ANY opinion - which is ALL I offered. PLEASE show me ONE STAT that I suggested.

And as far as my "source" goes -

[edit] I AM MY SOURCE

Whether I was in Tampa or at home - my opinion is based off of one simple thing - the things I've seen, the observations I've made. Not having worked a full time job since last April I've watched 90% of the Rays games in the last two years.

And get this, KD... I have spent my life watching and/or playing baseball, so I consider myself and my experiences - and further more my grab bag of life experiences, since LIFE is a metaphor and it all relates to this plane somehow) to be a pretty good judge of what I am watching...

So GET OFF MY NUTS.

Stop with the "You think your someone" bullshit. Because I KNOW who I am - and I haven't changed one iota whether I won the "Meet the Rays" lottery or not, regardless of any "connections" I might have... I see the world through MY eyes and THAT is what makes me special - not the petty things you are assuming.

All I ever wanted from EVERY contributor here at AGM or in the real world is "MORE". Give more, give your all, do better... If I "criticize" your efforts consider for a moment that I am trying to HELP YOU. Don't fall into the trap of unawareness that says "Most people would rather be killed with compliments than saved by criticism".

I observe and see things that you can't won't and would never think of... Trust me. "Manny Stiles" is no one trick pony.

I know that people sometimes have a hard time wrapping their heads around the person Erik is, but just do it. Let me be me. I am not a fake, this is what I do. Barry Bonds' ball is in the HOF. I think it was meant to be so that Barry Bonds would not even want to be in the Hall of Fame. IMO, it deserves to be in there. It's a piece of history. If there was a Hall of INfame for all the infamous players, then I think we'd all agree that we'd put it there.

Since I don't have much knowledge about the Rays, as I've never watched any of their games (all I've done is depend on the stats and a couple of game recaps I've watched on ESPN), I'll take Manny's word and just go with what he says...

Those Tigers are coming back. Better watch out, other 29 MLB teams!

The NL West is the new NL Central, I guess...

Hmmm... I wonder who has AL batting average leader on their fantasy team.

Rich Harden is one helluva contributor on the mound. He and Duscehscescrehrscerhhescher are doing exceptionally well for the pitching staff, which is one of the key factors as to why the A's are doing well in the standings, I'm sure.

I agree with Peter Gammons. After that Astros/Brewers series in mid-May, I started paying more attention to Berkman. He's a beast! I say he will win the NLTC.

It all goes back to Bud Selig for not doing something about McGwire. If he had paid attention to what McGwire was doing and stopped it then Bonds wouldn't be facing trial.

very true. Like I said, I have no lust to defend Barry. I think you're dead on here, but it was a huge dilemma. Baseball needed a spark to get it back up and running, and McGwire and Sosa were it. Selig was screwed either way, imo.

My opinion is worth nothing and that is why I am surprised that someone who disagrees with me wants to take it to this level. I don't have a temper so I am not mad at all...just very disappointed I was treated this way.

Selig wanted to keep the owners happy and didn't want to rock the boat in the middle of the financial bonanza baseball was making because of all the home runs.

yes, but also, baseball was still recovering from the strike. The money was coming in because of the home runs was great, but he wanted to make sure the money would keep coming. He was probably screwed either way.

Bonds is an amazing story altogether. I bet Ken Burns thanks his lucky stars he didn't have to do a ninth inning on Bonds. How do you get the happy ending? The funny thing is, he never needed an ounce of the juice. His Dad raised him on the game. He was a very good athlete with power, skills and speed. In Pittsburgh, he was terrific. Then, one day he steps to the plate looking like Tony Manderich. I would not call him a lock for the Hall at all. Quite the opposite. He's not famous, he's infamous. You'd have to put Fidel Castro in there too.

Couldn't agree more. It's really a pity that Bonds did this to himself. He would have been a lock HOF guy if he'd never touched the stuff. He was well on his way when he left the Buccos.
