Baseball Notebook: 30-30 Club: Only 4 Times This Century in AL

Alfonso Soriano has reached the 30-30 club four times and the 40-40 club once already this century
Alfonso Soriano has reached the 30-30 club four times and the 40-40 club once already this century

Since the turn of the 21st century, there have been only four times where an American Leaguer joined the 30-30 club. Of those four times, Alfonso Soriano did it three times. Soriano joined the club in 2002 and 2003 with the New York Yankees, and in 2005 with the Texas Rangers. Jose Cruz Jr. is the only other American League player to become a member of the club in this century when he became a member of the 30-30 club with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2001.

It is a different story in the National League with with nine players joining the exclusive club. One of those players is also Alfonso Soriano, who had 30-30 with the Washington Nationals in 2006. Since the turn of the century, Vladimir Guerrero joined the club in 2001 and 2002 with the Montreal Expos, and Bobby Abreu did it in 2001 and 2004 while playing for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Preston Wilson was the first player in either league to join the 30-30 club this century when he joined the club in 2000 while with the Florida Marlins. The other three players to reach 30-30 did it last season when David Wright of the New York Mets, Brandon Phillips of the Cincinnati Reds and Jimmy Rollins of the Phillies. Soriano is the only one of the club to also be a member of the 40-40 club when he had 46 homers and 41 stolen bases.

Baseball-almanac has a list of 30-30 players:

http://baseball-almanac.com/hitting/hi3030c.shtml

With the season a third over by the end of the week, a player would need 10 stolen bases and 10 homers to be on a pace to have 30-30 this season. The only player this season to have 10 homers and 10 stolen bases is Lance Berkman with 16 homers and 10 stolen bases. Hanley Ramirez is the only other player close to having a chance right now to join the 30-30 club, since he has 9 homers and 13 stolen bases.

Bobby Bonds did it five times, twice in the NL and three in the AL, and missed by a homer of doing it six times.

Bobby came 1hr away from the 40-40 club in 73' and came 3hr away from doing it in 77'

But guess who is in the 40-40 club also...Barry Bonds, who achieved this feat in the season of 96' and came 3sb away from doing it again in 97'

I had convinced myself that Rickey Henderson must have reached this mark, but he fell short with 28 home runs in both 1986 and 1990.

Dante Bichette is the player that I didn't expect to find on this list.

That's true, Niteowl. I found it hard to believe that Dante Bichette was able to steal 30 bases weighing 235 pounds in '96 (when he had the 30-30 season). However, he had 198 hits that season, 135 of them being singles, as well as 45 walks, which gave him 180 chances to steal 2nd base. Think of it that way.

What I find surprising is that Manny actually stole a base this year!

Forget Manny stealing a base, I saw Ortiz steal one this year and it was the funniest thing ever. I thought he was going to have a heart attack afterwards.

You mean he actually stole one? According to baseball reference he still has 0 stolen bases. That's why I didn't use him as an example. ;)

Seeing Soriano's name up there so many times makes the overpaid criticism's seem kind of off target. He might not be the best defensive player but being so consistent with 30-30 does more than make up for that.

I don't know how the heck he gets that bat around so quickly. He's carrying a 40+ oz bat every time he comes up to bat. How strong are his forearms!?

Soriano has started slow two years in a row but when the season is over he will probably be near the top of the offensive lists. Ortiz has one more stolen base than Johnny Estrada who has zero.

I think everytime he's in a slump, just injure him, put him on the disabled list, and you'll get your 30-30 with Soriano. ;)

Bichette looks like he couldn't even make it from second to home on a double....and they could hit a sacrifice fly to the deepest part of the park and they would throw him out at home.
