Bartolo Colon agrees to preliminary minor-league contract with Red Sox

Transaction : This is something I didn’t see coming from a mile away. The last I heard Bartolo Colon was going to sign with the Chicago White Sox pending a physical but its been reported tonight that the other color Sox have reached a preliminary agreement with Colon for a minor-league contract.

My analysis : It’s a good thing Boston has money to spend because this honestly could go either way. He has had a few dominant years (2.93 ERA in 233IP in 2002, 2005 Cy Young Award winner) and has had a few injury-riddled terrible years (5.11 ERA in 56IP in 2006, 6.34 ERA in 99IP last season.)

There is a chance that his injuries could be behind him and he could go back to being the dominant right-hander he should be. If this happens, look for him to take over Curt Schilling’s spot in the rotation as Curt goes through his whole rehab/surgery drama. It will help in adding another power arm to the team.

There is an even bigger chance that he still weighs 250+ pounds and won’t break spring training with the club. He will need to shed a lot of that excess weight and make sure his arm is in shape if he wants to stay healthy and prove to everyone that he can still pitch.

Colon throws a mid to upper 90s fastball as well as a variety of off-speed pitches. His disabled list time in 2006 and 2007 was due to a cornucopia of arm injuries (torn rotator cuff, unnamed elbow injury, and pitching shoulder inflammation.)

I see no reason for this move unless it was for someone to keep David Ortiz company in the buffet line.

OK... you guys got rid of David Wells. Why did you get Bartolo Colon now? Haven't you learned your lesson?

They still had the XXXXXXXXL unis and wanted to do something with them (besides, it was too nice to use as a field tarp)

smart move... it's a minor league deal so you have little downside and if he ever gets fully healthy maybe you have a cy young pitcher on your hands...

Bartolo and the Red Sox do need to make sure his Colon is healthy before he's ready, so who knows how this will turn out.

Maybe they are signing him to sit on DJ Drew???

250lbs isn't a problem, 350 is!!!

Or to recall "Straight Outta Armchair" -

"I'm fatter than facking Wells, call me Smartolo Colon!"

He's only listed at 250. Looking at him, I'd say somebody is lying.

I'm not surprised that Colon got a minor role. Colon got yanked last season because of injuries, and now Colon has to work his way back. Yes, I'm immature.

With Schilling done at least til the second half, this is a really good move. It's a minor league deal, so it's low risk/high reward. Colon will either suck and play in the minors or be good and fill Schilling's spot.

He won't play in the minors for the Red Sox. Don't be fooled by term "minor league contract". If he doesn't make their squad, he'll go find another team to give him a chance - Mets, White Sox, Astros, etc.

I like this move, but it's not that great. Colon isn't an insurance policy, as some are suggesting. He's an old, overweight, righty with shoulder problems. In other words, he's Curt Schilling #2. But with two Curt Schillings, the Sox hope that by flipping a proverbial coin twice, it is more likely to come up heads than if flipped only once.

Bartolo Colon can help prevent the bench from flying up by sitting on the opposite end from David Ortiz.

No teling what Wells will look like if he doesn't sign for 2008 season. He won't have any ballgames tying him up and keeping him from going out to eat. It will cut loose a lot of time for food sampling.

He can compete against Colon on "Biggest Loser". Never know, might spell a MLB comeback for both of them!
