Bailing Out the Coyotes

The financial problems of the Phoenix Coyotes are well known and have been the focus of efforts by the NHL to salvage the franchise for the better part of the season. It now appears that the City of Glendale, owner of the arena in which the Coyotes play, has been bailing out [1] the team for some time by foregoing rent payments. In 2007, the last full year for which payments were made, the Coyotes paid Glendale lease payments totaling $4.3 million, so we're not talking about pocket change here. The last date through which payment has been made is July, 2008.

Arena rent is one of the two major sources from which Glendale receives the funds needed to pay back the $200 million in bonds it floated to cover the construction costs of the arena. Foregoing rent for any significant length of time would obviously cause a problem with bond repayment and the bondholders would start to get very nervous, if they haven't already. There are unconfirmed reports that the NHL is covering all or a portion of the Coyotes rent payments during this period. Glendale's mayor would not comment on those reports, saying only: "I know who is going to pay the Coyotes' rent. The taxpayers will not lose any money."

There are investor group(s) looking at the franchise and restructuring the arena lease is a significant factor in the viability of any deal. Without a restructured lease, the Coyotes simply can not operate successfully.

As much as I dislike franchise moves if the Coyotes cannot restructure their arrangement in Glendale there may be no other option. If it does come to that I really would not mind if the club returns to Winnipeg.

The investors looking onto the coyotes are not local, not paying your bills at all is never a good thing, They have yet to ever turn a profit and what does Bettman have to say about this mess? Everything is fine. Really Bettman cause it looks like the shits flying and the coyotes are on their way out to...where?? Where in the hell could they go? You cant go home again (Really the city of Winnipeg cannot support an NHL team. There are NO corporate headquarter there the town's largest employer is the Government of Canada and they barley support the Bombers. Yes the gate sales, you can only charge so much and with no one there to pick up the slack on the luxury boxes you have no way of even breaking even.Besides that the arena there is woefully inadequate.)So where to Mr.B, who are you going to sell a bill of goods to next?

Hartford put out feelers to get an NHL franchise. And Hamilton wants one.

I like the idea of Hamilton getting an NHL team but try telling that to the Leafs. Not only do they think they are the centre of the universe apparently they also control the fate the of the NHL.

An equally creative response...

You can have an NHL team on the moon, in Arizona, in Florida, in California... so long as it makes money, or at least loses just as much money as the rest of the League.

Well Mr. Smartyknickers.... have you ever stopped to think that the reason the team is losing money ISN'T the location but the people RUNNING the franchise (into the ground)?

As proved by your 'insightful' theory, money can be made/equally lost on the moon, so WHY NOT Arizona? Because someone or a group of someones is facking up their responsibilities and needs to be replaced.

Perhaps they should try to put less uglier unis on or *GASP* a winning team on the ice and see what happens to the bottom line?

See, playing the shell game with an ailing franchise and moving it into a new city means NOTHING if the douches running the franchise can't pull their craniums from their colons... it's a BUSINESS, not geographical sudoku.

Then they'll move to Hamilton or Winnipeg and lose money there. Because I'm sure hockey is just as popular in Arizona as it is in Ontario.

But you're right. Bad owners will lose money anywhere. Which is why your idea of moving back to Phoenix is even worse than my plan to move to the moon. But whether it's the moon or Hamilton, they'll at least save money on air conditioning.

"Moving to Phoenix" was never my plan. Saying "Glendale Sucks!" was... Moving the Coyotes to Glendale was akin to moving the Bruins to New Hampshire.

Note - I really wish you wouldn't take me as seriously as you seem to need to take yourself. I mean, if you have all the answers to the world's issues why are you hording them for your personal gain here on AGM?

There's PLENTY of a fanbase in Phoenix (5th largest city in the U.S.) to carry a viable NHL franchise. As if by some mysterious power, the minor league Phoenix Roadrunners hockey team doesn't have financial problems... maybe because they play in the heart of the city and not out in the middle of a field of rocks in West Bumblefunk?

As for where hockey is popular - who cares? Are the TORONTO Maple Leafs turning a tremendous profit these days?

Like I said, winning cures all ills.
