BREAKING SOX NEWS: Sox release Doug Mirabelli

The Boston Herald is reporting that the Boston Red Sox have released Doug Mirabelli.

This comes as a surprise, since the Sox signed Douigie Fresh to a 1-year deal just this past winter. Why bother if you planned on cutting him in the spring?

Is George Kottaras' .538 spring BA the reason?

Kevin Cash, he of the .167 ML BA in '07, is more likely to fill in, but the Sox also have minor league veteran Dusty Brown in camp and he's batting .600 this spring...

Or could the Sox be making room for some new players due to a trade for Coco Crisp...?

He'll be back when they realize that Varitek sucks at catching the knuckler.

I'm not a fan of half post. Others who agree should go back and take back their vote.

Thanks for checking in guys. I'm new to the Armchair, so you'll have to bear with me a little...

Yakob878 - I would like to "Kotts" in the bigs as well, but I have a feeling they'll ride Tek & Cash (and maybe even Dusty Brown) though this season and let the younger George develop a little more.

If they don't make a move for a better option come 2009, I wouldn't be surprised to see Kotts as the full time back up.

Bottom Line: Cash can hold his own behind the plate, but will he hit any better while at the plate...?? I'm not sure. At 30 years of age, I wonder if he has much more room to improve on the .167 BA from '07...
