BREAKING KNEES!!! The Internet May Go Dark Just As "Kneegate" Negates Pats' Season!

  • Pardon me as I rehash the obvious, perhaps even use some of the same jokes you've already seen/heard - I haven't been in tune with the national media the last three days, so it's purely coincidental if it happens.

The world is a better place today.

Sure, I can be an a-hole, even loathesome. I have learned that it's good for people to hate someone who enjoys being a prick - so I am embracing it. I even despise myself sometimes when I find Skip Bayless agrees with some of the things I've thought (Eagles in the Super Bowl!). And am as big a Pats hater as anyone.

Sure, I've jokingly wished out loud that I wanted Tom Brady to succumb to serious injury - I even mentioned that it should be his knee (somehow, fate forgot that I mentioned this should happen at the ESPYs and that he should fall into Derek Jeter and injure his knee too, but 1 out of 2 is a start, I suppose). But other than Tim McCarver's voicebox I've never wished specific harm to any athlete or pseudo-celebrity not named Rachel Ray.

I'm no average Boston Sports Hater and I'm certainly not your average Patriots despiser.... not at all. I have jinxed them, jinxed them and even jinxed them. Plus I won't tell you how many times I accurately predicted in detail the "One" part of that "18 and..." mantra. But I won't take credit for Tom Brady realizing the law of averages, kharma or even the black magic/Brazilian voodoo of some obsessed Gisele fan (or perhaps Drew Bledsoe)

No, I won't revel in the fact that the NFL just lost a billion or so dollars from the wannabe/winners-by-association/Patriots bandwagon. But I will explain all the reasons this is a bad development for all of us.

Now that they are gone, who will I have left to pick on and annoy?
Now that they are gone, who will I have left to pick on and annoy?

Why Tom Brady's knee injury hurts us all:

1. If the Pats do well, Bill Belichick will get MORE credit. We all know it's his fault for having Brady on the Injury Report for 8,000 consecutive weeks with phantom injuries. It's the Curse of the Injury Report. Now all kinds of NFL players will start to get hurt - you just watch! Damn you Belichick! Damn you!!!

2. It's football. Players get hurt all the time. It's common knowledge the average NFL career lasts 3 1/2 games. Brady was well past his expiration date. Lucky for Tom Brady he already has lots of money. And now he has time to spend some of that money, he will stimulate the economy and that in turn will trickle down into the worst case scenario - Inflation. Before you know it, NFL tickets will be so expensive that average fans won't have the opportunity to see their favorite player's careers end in front of their very eyes. Damn you Football! Damn you!!!

3. Pundits (a term that gets used FAR too often) will now debate the value of pre-season games. Since any game against the Chiefs doesn't count in the standings this scenario could have been avoided by lengthening the preseason to 5 weeks so we can fawn over Brett Favre instead of having to see the Chiefs on the field. Damn those Pundits!!! Damn them!

4. Now all the focus of the greater Boston area will go onto the Red Sox. Without sounding too cocky, if the Rays will seep the Red Sox in Boston then again next week in Tampa all we have to do is hope for the inevitable KG preseason breakdown/overdue surgery to make the internet a tolerable place to be once again. Screw the Red Sox!!! With a very intense powertool!!!

5. Without all those Boston Pretendo Fans and Cassel apologists flooding cyberspace with their assumed eminence what will be left for the rest of us? Boring, factual and intelligent discussion about sports without delirious bias? Truths? Facts? Actual Sports Knowledge? Gasp! Arrrgh! Gasp!

6. Voodoo and Kharma take a PR hit while "The Law of Averages" gets a free pass. That's the real crime here. It's just not fair. When events revert to the mean, we all lose. Damn that reality! Damn it!!!

7. Now the NFL will have only true football fans paying attention. Real football fans won't have to explain everything to Pats fans anymore. That can't be good for the broadcasters or advertisers. Who will pay attention to all the non-football related sprue that permeates the games? Half the Fantasy geeks just committed suicide and 3/4 of the world's gay football fans just gave up on sports altogether. The hardest hit group? People with chinbutts. They might never recover.

8. The old axioms stay true. Any given Sunday. Expect the unexpected. You never know. Every "Experts" predictions are wrong by week one. And so on... Damn you, cliches!!! Damn you with a cliche!!!

9. Now I have to write a game capsule on the rest of the Patriots' 15 games this season. I just HAVE to! Darn. How many ways can I spin it?

  • "Brady-less Patriots suck even more vs. Jets"
  • "Pats are still on pace for 18-1 without Brady."
  • "Pats suffer a bye week without Brady"
  • "Should the Pats forfeit all their games without Brady?"
  • "Pats fans suddenly reminded of the days of Dick MacPherson and Rod Rust without Brady"
  • "Why did God forsake his second begotten son, Tom Brady?"
  • "Area hospitals note decrease in bastard births since Brady's injury"
  • "Bill Belichick is still a tremendous cock without Brady."
  • "Inflatable Tom Brady dolls with one leg now on Clearance"
  • "Arlen Specter not satisfied with NFL's treatment of videotapes of Brady's injury"
  • "Tom Brady causes new fashion wave: Crutches flood high schools all over Boston"
  • "Patriots fans who laughed at Peyton Manning's injury ARE to blame for Brady's kharma"
  • "Pats still lost Super Bowl to Eli Manning despite Brady being lost for season."
  • "The REAL Randy Moss shows up without Brady"
  • "Tom Brady proves he was VERY over rated as Pats win without him"
  • "No one talking about Brady's ankle injury"
  • "Red Sox sucks without a plethora of Brady jerseys filling Fenway."
  • "Burning effigies of Tom Brady no longer en vogue"
  • "Manny Stiles blames Tom Brady's knee and the media's lack of creativity for the usage of the term "Kneegate"
  • "Brady, Brady, Brady" - Matt Cassel changes name to 'Jan'.

Yes, I really could do two or three a week, I suppose. Yes, Damn me indeed!

10. Without Tom Brady in the NFL, people are going to start to talk about politics instead. See? This really is bad for us all... These things never happen in a non-election year, do they? Damn you politicians! Damn you all to a fiery hell forever!!

Seven Years, seven years I've had to deal with you Boston loudmouths

Payback IS a bitch. Assume that is true.

Things always happen in threes... 18-1, Brady's knee... WHAT will the third one be?

Anti-Pats fans, Haters and dudes that are jealous because they think Gisele is hot - that backlash is NOTHING compared to the onslaught we've had to tolerate from the people who didn't know the NFL existed pre-2000. You were worse than Yankees fans during the 90's. Seriously, that is reason enough to let the tidal wave of titles out of the can o'worms.

The haters and spewers of diatribe will grow weary within a week or two. It's the nature of the sportstalk, sports banter, bartalk and sports-blog world. Out of sight, out of mind. The World will continue to spin...

As for me - I'm a whackjob, so I WILL remind you all season long that "something is missing but I can't remember quite what it is."

And God save you all if the Red Sox somehow luckily overtake the Rays... pray HARD they don't!

Peace and Good Tidings, Manny

P.S. - I will wish Tom Brady a speedy recovery from his surgery and rehab. I mean he's never going to be the same now but neither are the Patriots...

Let the real NFL season begin!

Yeah, I was thinking about it, but here's how I rationalize it...

I'm a Philly fan born one year after a title win...I've never seen anyone win. So what's the worst that could happen? Our Star QB goes down with an injury (been there done that) our team misses the playoffs by 1 or 2 games (see 2003 through 2006), our hockey team becomes the worst in the league? (meh, I've seen it)...

So screw it...it's not like somehow my cosmic existence can somehow make the team more terrible...Jesus, I grew up watching Richie Kotite

Hating Bill Simmons is part of what caused me to start writing for myself much in the same way Mazzy Star made me learn how to play guitar - if they can do it I can DEFINITELY do it!!! Since I don't watch the gay shows on television half of Simmons articles were lost on me anyway... (much the way not doing heroin and crack together ruins a Mazzy Star song.)

Seriously though - If it wasn't for my Hunter S. Thompson fanship I would have never heard of Bill Simmons. My anti-Boston issues started LONG before the internet became popular.

I still have to laugh when I met Matt Silverman and he said "We look at you as OUR Bill Simmons." and I told him VERY sternly "Please don't call me that." - I think I scared him a little bit...

And it is official, Manny hates sports. No really think about it. He likes the Rays, so they have 2 fans, him and Dick Vitale. He hates passionate fans and roots for people to get injured. Yes Manny Stiles hates sports.

It's a shame you don't have a positive bone in your body for actual sports. It's sad that you waste talent on spewing venom and hatred. I thought all the feuds you got into around here were due to other people. I have come to realize otherwise, and that your big rant in the locker room was something you have yet achieve. You talk love and writing for joy, but yet you are more negative than Jay Marriotti and you constantly write hate peices. Good luck man, all this karma you speak of will hit you until you let it go.

See there was another trainwreck of a messageboard that I was on last year. But after the Super Bowl we worked our crap out and there was not one person cheering on Brady's injury. Sure we laughed at the guy who's yahoo auto-draft took Cassell and hoped he was smart enough to keep him. But that board is a better place and is drama free. We are actually talking about football. Many people here however have yet to let things go. So teams you don't like keep winning? Big deal, stop acting like crybabies. Boston fans are enjoying it because we've seen the other side, we were there. In the 90's Boston was a wasteland, so I'm going to enjoy the fact that my teams are winning, because it won't last. Someday, god forbid, Philly will be on top. You'll hate them too Manny, because you hate sports.

Someone give Manny a hug. Tom Brady's Knee injury has hurt him more than it hurt any Pats fan.

I've been a fans of boston sports my entire life. In 1988 I thought I was lucky because I got to go 3 patriots games that season in stead of the 1 or 2 I normally got to go to. It did not matter to me that they sucked.

We aren't what you think we are. EVERY team that wins draws in new fans, it's called sports, maybe if you were a fan...

You are absolutely wrong about Boston, but like all people who hate the city but have never been there, you'll never understand. Go root for your empty stadium, you'll be able to hear yourself better that way.

The Bruins don't sell out, but they have loyal fans. Me being a Bruins fan (and also not being much of a Celtics fan) disproves your assertion. It also isn't very cheap to go to a Bruins game.

There aren't too many teams (outside of football) that consistently lose AND sell out every game. Usually teams sell out when they're competetive. It's just like people going to see movies if they're good, and not seeing them if they're bad.

One could make the argument that Boston's bandwagon fans are the most irritating of all bandwagon fan groups. And I'd probably agree with them. But to argue that ALL Boston fans are as irritating as the pink hats is very narrow. You're smarter than that, Manny.

You crusade against the word "ever" but seem to love the word "every."

Look, who do we all hate? Bandwagon fans. And where do bandwagon fans flock, by definition? Winning teams. And guess which city has the defending MLB, NBA, and AFC champions, plus a CFB team that won its division, an NHL team which took the #1 seed Habs to 7 games, and a pretty good pro soccer team?

So Boston is inevitably going to have bandwagon fans right now. It's to be expected. Then some other city will see success, and the fairweather fans will jump to their ship. By singling out Boston's bandwagoners as supposedly being worse than those of other cities, Manny's "Ever"?_Whatever..._is_it_2008_or_1988?_A_Peer_Into_Stiles'_20_Years'_Kaleidoscope sure getting uncharacteristically caught up in the moment...

a little overboard as usual manny, but enjoyable nonetheless. However, I'm sure you know this, I do want to point out to those who might not the law of averages is basically a fallacy. The law of large numbers is similar, but applies only to random events. Whether or not Tom Brady gets hurt isn't entirely random and is effected by many factors including how quickly he gets the ball away, offensive line, competition, fitness level, etc.

that's great guys...but this site's about sports and talking about sports, etc etc...last i checked this article was for making fun of pats fans and the like...

For example, anyone who's on this site is

A) A fan of some kind

B) Probably loves sports (maybe loves someone who loves sports?)

C) Wants to talk sports

D) All of the above

So its kinda futile to argue about bandwagoning, because most (exception being False Prophet who's a Pats fan since 2001...heh heh) folks here have deeply seeded fanhood...

But every major bastion of fans does the bandwagoning things...I was pretty sure there were only white sox fans in 2005 (otherwise I've never seen one). When teams win, they have "fans"

So can we go back to salivating how wide open the Super Bowl is this year...

I kind of agree with Pip, and I kind of don't. Manny talks sports. But he allows little room for disagreement. Strangely, the more subjective the topic, the less likely he is to allow for said disagreement. If you disagree one iota with Manny's sports opinions, he will attack. If you think your city is a great sports town and he doesn't, he will find some anecdotal evidence that "proves" he's right. He'll make broad generalizations that stand on flimsy foundations. It's best not to take him too seriously, because I don't think he takes himself all that seriously.

I'm at a Dbacks game a couple weeks ago, this young dude sits behind us with his date, obviously didn't know the game well. For three innings I listened to him try and explain shit to his girlfriend and yell at players (from the upper deck). Finally, I let him have it. Runner on third, two outs, batter takes a pitch, dude starts yelling about how they should bunt. I turn around, "there's two outs, asshole." After the inning is over, they disappear, never to be seen again.

People like that drive me INSANE. You might have assholes in New York/Boston/Philly, but you don't have retards.

I don't have "major issues" with anyone not banned here - they all have major issues with ME. I asked Niteowl not to leave. I had NOTHING to do with Cougar leaving and SSR never really left - I never asked anyone to leave this site - EVER - not Pnatt, not Tyrone - only plagiarists.

Call me a "troll", call me whatever names you want. But that's your perrogative if you want to make yourself sound like a fool.

As for Tom Brady getting hurt - it's FOOTBALL - it happens to all kinds of players every year. Human beings get hurt and I think it's funny because it's not me. I guess I'm the only person in the world who giggles at other's misfortunes.

HOW DARE I make fun of the Patriots??? Because Pats fans are God's gift to Earth, are perfect in every way and never do the exact things they take offense to...

And here's the rub...give Cassel the 2003 or 2004 incarnation of the pats and I'd say they're at least a 10 win team. Their defense was good and their offense was predicated on running and they had respectable receivers (unlike the 05 and 06 groups, which go to show you the value of moss).

But now in 2008, with the offense certainly being pretty damn good, I'm not sure. I dunno is Cassel can use moss (as you pointed out in an Andrew Walter Comparison) and I'm just not sold on Laurence Maroney. But more importantly, that defense is a shell of its former self.

I will say, that if the Pats make the playoffs they'll have a 1,000 yard rusher (probably Maroney) because they'll need to keep their defense off the field a lot

I think it goes without saying that we haven't seen everything Maroney has to offer yet. But I agree, we got way too imbalanced on offense last year, it was like watching a team I didn't really recognize compared to the 2001-2004 run. So reliant on the pass... I hope BB/JMcD have those old playbooks stashed away somewhere, because we're going to have to run the ball again. Luckily, we did it once with Antowain Smith and J.R. Redmond, and I'm pretty sure the crop we've got now is better than they were.

Cassel has all the tools a QB could want on offense, so if he fails, it's on him. The defense isn't as good as it was in '03 or '04, but they played well in a big situation on Sunday, and the new LBs are playmakers, IMO.

The Yankees never went 154-4, or 166-4 or even 169-4, that's all I know.

I can't believe I was watching the 3 Mikes grunting and groaning instead of partaking in this. Manny, you're supposed to aim the AGM light into the sky, so I can know.

You were watching gay porn instead of talking online with a bunch of dudes about Tom Brady?

Freeing you up to be a Yankees fan? By the way, are you just putting on a happy voice, or are you actually accepting Brady's injury?

Speaking from experience, you kind of talk yourself into thinking the team's still pretty good without its star QB

"The defense is still good," "Our coach knows what he's doing," "We've been lucky before"

Fact of the matter is, every game starts with a little pit in your stomach and unless you reel off some serious wins (I cite Garcia or A.J. Feeley in 2003, the Pats could go with Brady in 01), its just kinda scary...

For the record, I don't know any "true" fan that doesn't hate some element of their team's fan base. After watching ESPN broadcast a dozen Duke games, even Manny can find fault with his fan base.

That's it! I'm gonna go find some quality porn (or failing that, a Unicorn) instead of taking this abuse!

Manny, I am deeply disappointed.

You copied my picture idea! From here!

Admittedly, I stole it from here! But that's not the point! ;-)

Yes, I stole your idea of a tombstone representing the death of something. (Funny thing is, I has never seen your article, but I did see that tombstone with the glass rose and bypassed it for some reason... maybe it was my machismo?) Should I change the picture to a flaming raft of Pats fans pushed out to sea?
