Atlanta Falcons Fed Up; Start Giving IQ Tests to Head Coach and GM Candidates

That is right, Arthur Blank is tired of being ridiculed and demoralized so he has decided that it is time to give IQ tests to potential candidates.

One word: Wow.

So far, no one has lived up to the expectations of the jilted Blank, hence the absence of a replacement for Bobby (Benedict) Petrino.

If you were unaware, Petrino left the team with 3 games left in the season to take a Head Coaching job with the Arkansas Razorbacks. If that wasn’t enough, he failed to do a face-to-face with the team, but instead left a “Dear John” letter in the locker room.

According to players, this was par for the course with Petrino.

A weasel and a falcon
A weasel and a falcon

After the season came to a miserable 4-12 end, the Falcons fired their General Manager, Rich McKay. Rumors are that he has been offered the job of Team President but nothing has been determined.

So the Falcons continue to look; which may be tough now that they have been spurned by Bill Parcells and Michael Vick is in prison. This doesn’t give the franchise the “new car smell” that a lot of potential candidates would like.

And to add to the difficult nature of getting someone to take over the failing franchise, they are giving people IQ tests, which are probably comparable to the Wonderlic Test that potential draftees need to take.

Some think that this is a bad move by the Falcons and the tormented Blank, but I believe that this is a good idea. Why, you ask. Wait, it is coming.

Blank has been hurt. He has been hurt much like the woman who finds out that her boyfriend of two-years is sleeping with her sister. He has been hurt much like the parent who puts all of their effort into raising a child and the child ends up being a mass-murderer. (My apologies to anyone with these afflictions)

When someone is hurt like this by someone they trusted they want to make certain that it won’t happen again. They can check references, do background checks and even hire a private eye, but an IQ test will give more information on this new person.

These tests consist of information that can assist the tester in making predictions of future happenings based on their past and their knowledge set.

Now ESPN.com is reporting that Pete Carroll may be interested in leaving USC for the Falcons.

Will he need the IQ test? Or will the National Championships speak for themselves?

Pete Carroll belongs in college. He's great there. He'd be crazy to leave, and any remotely intelligent NFL GM/owner (you'd think) wouldn't touch even the best college coach with 50 foot pole.

I think it has a lot to do with the type of coach Caroll is. He is perfect to coach kids, and by kids I mean guys in college. I don't think the pros could ever relate to him.

i think the only plus for him going from college to the pros would be his "pro-style" offense. Other then that...mediocre.

Honestly Carroll is probably better than the other dimwits that Blank will probably look at, he did post a winning record, and if things had been different, he could be the Patriots coach we call a genius today. Blank has gone wrong with coaches since he fired Dan Reeves and let Wade Phillips go after leading a struggling team to a winning record while he was interim head coach. Blank was too trusting in Michael Vick and obviously doesn't know Joe Bugel from Vince Lombardi. He is ignoring top GM candidates with his own personal list and will probably find a way to further harm a franchise that was competitive only a few seasons ago.

I heard that the Falcons are planning to interview Giants dc Steve Spanguolo once the season ends. I think he would be a good hire even though I personally hope they dont sign him.

Leslie Frazier runs the same defensive scheme from Jim Johnson that Spagnolo runs and he's getting an interview so they might be leaning towards that crowd if Carroll doesn't fall through.

Carroll's only decent NFL season (10-6) came the year right after Parcells left NE. You take that away and his career NFL record is 23-25. Mediocre.

His rah-rah style just doesn't fly in the NFL.

At USC he gets the first pick of the best talent in the country. He gets a guaranteed pre-season against cupcake opponents that he can use to evaluate talent. He doesn't have to deal with salary cap issues, etc.

well they were decent too in 98 when they lost to the Jaguars and Brunnell in the playoffs, but i don't know if anyone could handle this situation well. The players aren't responding to any kind of authority with the free mike vick antics and the sense of betrayal in the organization will be hard to overcome.
