Are You "Kidd"ing Me: Dallas gives up arm and a leg for Kidd

THIS JUST IN!!!!!!!!!: Devean George blocks the Trade...saying he doesn't want to be part of it...so now Dallas has to reconstruct another package without George....

The Dallas Mavericks have got back Jason Kidd for, get this...24 year old Devin Harris, veteran swingman Jerry Stackhouse, the expiring contracts of center DeSagana Diop, Devean George and guard Maurice Ager, 2008 and 2010 first rounders, and an additional 3 million dollars. (Oh, and they get Malik Allen, too!) Bear in mind these are the same guys that thought Steve Nash was washed up and wanted youth at the point. New Jersey said thanks but no thanks to Stackhouse and will buy out his contract when the deal is finalized. So the Mavs pass on Kobe, pass on Shaq, but go after Kidd in the 3rd blockbuster trade this month.

Now for analysis:

Dallas: Its hard to count out a 4 man core of Kidd,Dirk, Terry, and Josh Howard. In a Western Conference flooded with great guards, Parker, Paul, Nash etc. Dallas decided to go for some veteran leadership. Kidd is quietly having a great season nearly averaging a triple double, something that hasn't been done since Oscar Robertson. Stackhouse is free to come back with his tail between his legs after 30 days and it's a nice counter to the Suns Lakers transactions.

New Jersey: So you dished your star guard for a Mark Cuban pupu platter but you get a young point guard, 2 first rounders and lets not forget Richard Jefferson has been a problem this year. This season is just about done and it's time to look ahead. Devean George could be a solid player off the bench as he was with the Lakers. And if Harris evolves into a top tier PG, they might look back at this deal as the biggest steal since they traded for Kidd in the first place

Jason Kidd: Jason Kidd can come in and not lose a step. I like Kidd and Howard together as Kidd will get him the ball and Howard will produce. Only downside is that Dirk might disappear in the playoffs. So, like I said if he can make the players around him better it could work.

Rest of the League: Lebron is a little pissed but I think the gap is growing between the East and West again. The Southwest division has got that much tougher and the Atlantic has got that much easier(not like the C's don't have it wrapped up already). I for one am hoping for a Suns-Mavs WCF, Kidd versus Nash would be epic. Not crowning anyone yet though. As for the East, its same as before Celtics, Pistons, Cavs and the rest(not sold on the Magic yet).

Opinion: If not already implied by the title I think the Mavs gave up way too much. Do they not realize when a player wants out you can get him for just about anything. Like the Shaq trade, if it works they are geniuses if it fails they are fools.

One time in Phoenix they were fighting over something and J-Kidd gave her a kind of push/slap in the face, so the skank called the cops. The kids were nearby so Kidd asked the cops to follow him into the house so they wouldn't cuff him in front of them and he took off his shirt and he was covered in cuts and bruises on his chest and back. She beat the crap out of him, punching and cutting him with her fingernails. He went out to the garage to leave for a game and she followed him outside and threw her cell phone at him and hit him in the back of the head, that's when he pushed her away. Needless to say, he wasn't arrested, and he wouldn't press charges against her.

That trade now, is actually worse than the Shaq deal. If anything, if the Mavs continue this free fall they have had, then someone is going to get the pink slip, because this trade makes absolutely no sense to me.

The worst part about this blockbuster, is that all of the players the Mavericks traded have plenty of years left to play in the NBA. Jason Kidd has, maybe 3-4 years left.

Potential wise for Jersey is good, but it definitely isn't a bad move for Dallas. All Dallas wants is a championship title and Kidd is the right one to bring it to town. Veteran presence at point guard is key, especially come playoff time. Who would you rather have running the show in the playoffs for you, Harris or Kidd? Sure Harris will develop into an allstar over the next few years but Mark Cuban can't wait that long. During all the time Harris is trying to develop, the rest will be falling apart. Now if Kidd doesn't deliver in Dallas, it may make Cuban look stupid but that isn't how it's looking now. He see's other teams like Phoenix and L.A. improving their squads, so why not improve his. L.A. and Phoenix were already playoff material teams but their new additions gives them that threat for the playoffs. What will Dallas have? The same exact team that lost to Golden State a year ago?

How many titles does Harris have TayTay? None. Rasheed Wallace was a good player in Portland and Detroit got him to try and win a championship. How many titles did he have? None. The Heat copped a decent Gary Payton for some help but how many rings did he have before he went to Miami? None. Say that Boston will win a title this year...who'd they get in order to help them out? Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett. If they win a title this year, who will some of the credit go to? Garnett and Allen. How many rings did they have before coming to Boston? None. Different teams and different enviroments are things that can affect how a player will perform. How long has Kidd not been happy in Jersey? I know Kidd isn't the one to allow stuff like that bother him on the court, but still. The reason he could bring a title to Dallas is because of the TEAM, not himself. Maybe he just wasn't surrounded by the right teammates in Jersey as much as people want to believe he was (Jefferson and Carter). Maybe Devon Harris just wasn't the right guy to help bring a title to Dallas at point guard. Harris has a different style than Kidd does. Harris doesn't have that veteran train of thought yet so he can't do the things that Kidd can do in Dallas. Maybe Dallas needs a triple-double guy like Kidd to get the team where it needs to be. Harris' 5.3 assists is nothing to Kidd's 10.4. Harris is putting up 14.4 points and Kidd isn't that far away with 11.3. But the team play that comes from Kidd makes up for the extra 3 points that he's not averaging. Dallas needs a team player not another potential star.

Of course Harris doesn't have a title--he's only in his fourth year. It's this simple: Kidd might make the Mavs better this year, but only marginally so, if at all. And they get significantly worse in the years to come.

A lot of people are assuming that Kidd in Dallas guarantees a title and I have no idea what they are basing that on. This team with Kidd cannot compete with the Spurs or the Suns this year. This flawed logic is all I am questioning here. The Mavs aren't winning this year with Harris, either. But they can continue to grow with him. Not so with Kidd.

The Mavs are mortgaging their future for nothing.

My bad i meant to delete the first setence before i posted it. But i agree with what your tryna say here. It's best for Harris to stay because it gives Dallas a bright future especially with him at point guard. But like I said before, Mark Cuban is an impatient dude and he wants to bring a title to town ASAP. Waiting for Harris to develop is not what he plans on doing. Meanwhile, while Harris is trying to develop, Dirk, Howard whom have already reached their full playing ability would most likely either continue to play at the same level or fall. I dont know, I guess it all depends on how quick Harris develops. I haven't seen his full potential yet and I believe that he will only end up a little bit better than what he is now. I see him as just an all star player, not a franchise player.

Dallas doesn't need Harris to be a franchise player, and he will get quite a bit better than he is now. Dirk isn't on the decline yet--he's got at least four or five more years at his current level of production. Howard has certainly not reached his full potential yet--he continues to get better each year. D21W is right--this is a panic move. Case in point: the Spurs and Suns love this deal.

As a Nets fan, I am glad to see Kidd on his way out. He has been posturing for this since last season. I love Kidd as a player, but he isn't a media darling by any means. He has no problems throwing his team under the bus if things don't go his way. I will say on thing though. This trade could be the NBA equivalent of the Herschel Walker deal in the NFL. It doesn't make the Nets a good team now, but with the cap relief they get from the expiring contracts and the 2 first rounders, they can be respectible pretty quickly. If they go ahead and get Vince Carter off the books too, and you have yourself a fresh new start!

C'mon guys, you aren't seriously saying that Devin Harris is better than Jason Kidd? Look at their numbers: steals, rebounds, ASSISTS! Kidd has him beat in every major category except points and shooting percentage and he's been doing it longer. In Dallas, Kidd won't really have to be a scorer. He's there to be a leader and to make everyone around him better. That's what he's done his whole career.

Plus everyone around them was improving, so Dallas had to do something. It's a lot to give up, but for this season, right now, Dallas is a better team because of it.

Like OFD said, you want Kidd leading your team in the playoffs. Devin Harris sure did a good job in the playoffs last year, right?

Absolutely I'm saying that Devin Harris is better than Jason Kidd. The only areas where Kidd is superior to Harris is in passing and rebounding. Dallas, if you recall, runs as many isos as anybody, so the benefits of Kidd's passing will be reduced. His rebounding is nice, but Dallas was already a decent rebounding team. Dallas' problem is on defense, specifically in forcing turnovers; Kidd and his steals will definitely help here, but Harris' on/off turnover numbers are just as good as Kidd's, and he's arguably a better overall defender. Meanwhile, Harris is a much better overall offensive player than Kidd, who can't shoot and is a turnover machine. The only reason it even looks like the two players are close is because Kidd is playing 37 MPG. This is a heist by NJ, make no mistake about it. Harris >> Kidd.

Dallas runs isos because they had no one to distribute. As an opponent, are you afraid of Harris? Not me. He may not get as many triple doubles in Dallas because he won't be asked to do as much but Dallas is much more dangerous with Kidd than with Harris. I know the people handing the Lakers and Suns the Western Conference title a few days ago aren't as confident now.

I am saying that they have traditionally iso-d Dirk and Howard and Stackhouse and Finley, etc. for years, dating back well into the Nash era. It wasn't because they didn't have a distributor. Now, maybe they'll adapt to Kidd's presence this year, but if they didn't with Nash (a better passer than Kidd), why would they change now? Also, Kidd thrives in transition. Guess who is one of the slowest teams in the league? Bingo, Dallas. This is a horrible trade on so many levels...

I'm not disagreeing with you on whether it's a bad trade or not, I just don't think it's that bad. New Jersey wasn't winning with Kidd, and they're not winning with the guys they just got. Dallas' chances of winning this year or next just got better, so it really can't be considered a "horrible" trade. The Gasol trade was a horrible trade.

Okay, agreed, if we're using the Gasol trade as the standard, then no, this isn't "horrible" -- at least both teams got something here. I'm just not sure if Dallas' chances got better this year. Diop was their best post defender; now who guards Shaq? Or Bynum? And what if they don't get Stack back after NJ buys him out? There are a million ways this trade can destroy the Mavs, now and definitely in the future. Maybe Kidd puts them over the top, but the odds are against it. Mainly, it just seems like the Gasol trade goes down and every other Western power loses their minds (except San Antonio, who I bet go further in the playoffs than either Dallas or Phoenix). You have to laugh at the mass panic started by that one move.

Diop sure as hell wasn't going to be the answer for Shaq or Bynum. He was their best post defender, but that's not saying much when your second best post defender is Dampier. The Mavs have always had the problem of not having a true post player, but there just isn't one on the market. Now Kidd is going to compensate for that by making more points for this team. Hopefully it will be enough.

The fact is that Dallas has had essentially the same team for a long time now and it's gotten them ZERO championships. Why not bring in a guy who can lead a team? Although he doesn't have any championships himself, he's proven that he's a winner and he makes his teammates better. Why not try something new to go along with Dirk and company?

Dallas will adjust to Kidd, and they have some good athletes (Terry, Howard, Dirk (kind of)) on that team who will run if given a chance.

Is it a good trade in the long run? No. Does it make Dallas a better team right now? I think it does.

Well, by that reasoning we should just let Randy Moss go because we didn't win the championship with him this year... The plain truth is that sh*t happens -- Dallas could have very easily won a title two years ago if not for a few breaks, a few calls, and Dwyane Wade channeling Jordan circa '86. Dallas could have advanced further in the playoffs last year if not for drawing a team that was custom-built to beat them (right down to the coach). Now, Dallas didn't win a ring either time, but just because you haven't won yet doesn't mean you should implode your core with a panicky move. They were still one of the top seeds in the West, and once you get into the playoffs, all bets are off. Cuban should have been more patient, but then again, patience isn't exactly his strong suit...

True, they've come very close, but they aren't just letting Harris go... they're improving their team (arguably), and that could get them over the top. Because of this, league rules grant him the right to veto any trade. And I'm glad he did, and I hope the deal is dead because the Mavs are getting hosed. However I'm sure the teams will get it done one way or the other.

More specifically, look for this deal to get reworked, minus George, and plus Keith Van Horn in a sign and trade. He never officially retired from the league and is still Mavs property. Cuban said he wouldn't use Van Horn in a trade, but that's an easy way to get the deal done, while still providing the Nets with an expiring contract.

Yeah, the deal will get done somehow. If they use Van Horn it will cost them twice as much in luxury tax and Cuban will probably have George whacked in the offseason on principle.

Seriously, I wonder if retaining those early Bird rights will even matter now...

Oh, and NICE SHOOTING tonight, Devean! 0-11 FG, 0-2 FT.... nice!

The thing I don't get is - didn't George recently ask to be traded because of a lack of playing time? DUDE, you WOULD get playing time in New Jersey, idiot!

Using Van Horn would make the deal more expensive, but we all know Cuban could wipe his butt with millions of dollars and wouldn't know the difference. As for George, he is poisoning his potential free agency. While he may be saving his ability to sign a bigger contract, he is negating the chance that a team will actually offer him one.

Van Horn won't cry over a $2 mil deal to "return" to New Jersey!

Hell if he doesn't do it, I'm not retired from the NBA yet!!! I'll even sit on the bench a game or two to make it look good!

So we agree that George will be in the Trinity River by Father's Day and his agent will never get another client signed to a multiyear deal again, right?

One of these days I'm gonna look it up and see where Cuban really ranks amongst the League's owners in wealth. Everyone assumes he's the Sultan of Brunei's American counterpart... I bet he's middle of the pack at best.

Well, according to USA Today's 2005 figures, Cuban is eighth with $1.3B. That's a far cry from Paul Allens $20B, but well above sixteenth ranked Dan Gilbert's $478M. Ain't Google great?

It's a poor measuring stick, but interesting anyway... 2005 was a long time ago in fortune years... Financial Empires can grow and/or die in the span of 3 years.

I know the Maloofs are easily worth well more than $200mil combined in 2008, for instance

And google sucks. There are at least 40,000 other search engines that work just as well...

There may be 40,000 search engines better than Google, but I think you have to use Google to find them.

Devean George made a business move which impacts him during the summer. He could be in a sign and trade package which could net him a lot more money.

The Mavs would still be a deep team. Problem is that Stackhouse can return to the Mavs but 30 days later, which puts him pass the deadline for teams to set their rosters for the playoffs, if he tries to sign with the Mavs. So considering that he wants a ring, I think he'll sign with the Spurs, Suns, or Celtics.

The Mavs should give up Diop though. He's better than Dampier and cheap. The Mavs have the Bynums, Gasols, Stoudamires, and Duncans to contend with in the West. They would be shooting themselves in the foot if they traded Diop. Otherwise, it's a good deal. I'm not very high on Devin Harris. I think he's the best defensive point guard in game, with respect to Billups (Rajon Rondo is solid himself, but he isn't there yet). But that's about it. He's game has been getting better with each passing year, but I don't think he'll ever be better than the Kidd we're seeing right now. JMO. Oh yeah, $20 million coming off the books after next season does help.

No way the Mavs will resign George or do him any favors now. His early Bird rights were never going to come into play and he basically shot himself in the foot (which after asking to be traded must be in his mouth)

i have to take exception to the part where it says richard jefferson has been a problem this year. for the opposition? cause certainly not for the nets. Otherwise i'll reserve my comments for if this trade actually goes through.
