I am well past obsessed with sports, especially Baseball. My girlfriend often thinks I would choose one conversation with Josh Beckett about his curveball grip over our relationship. It is tough call to be honest.. : )

Are The 46 legit?

Maybe it is due to the fact that he grew up in my home town, maybe it is the fact he was a first round pick once upon a time, but no matter what it was, I am in a small minority of folks who are sold on Carlos Pena as a great pick for first base. Now let me start right away by saying he is not a tier one first baseman. There are three of those (Albert Pujols, Ryan Howard, and Prince Fielder), but is he really not a tier two? All I keep hearing is how the 46 homers was a fluke and he will revert back to form. Well, 46 is a bit much but simply put Pena's form is something like .265 with 35 to 40 home runs. You don't believe me, you say? Well if you look at Pena's HR per plate appearance you may be shocked. Last year he hit a HR every 11 PA's (10.6 to be exact) prior to that he was hitting a HR every 19 PA so it was quite a jump. However Pena was just entering his prime (27) and his contact rate was also the highest it has been, indicating him using better pitch selection. Now another reason I chose to discuss Pena and the unwillingness of owners to "trust" him was due to the fact of how willing they are to "trust" Prince Fielder. If you run Fielders numbers side by side with Pena you see an eerie similar pattern in terms of long balls. How close? Well Last year Prince hit a HR every.. Yup, you guessed it 11 PA, but no it does not stop their friends. Fielder saw his HR/PA jump from "gulp" 20 PA per HR up to 11. So just a quick recap here. Pena goes from 19 to 11 and Fielder goes from 20 to 11, in a better hitting division mind you, yet he is a tier one stud and Carlos Pena is a one year fluke? Like I said maybe I am in the minority.

Consider this - Pena didn't even play much for the first month of the season last year... Also consider who was hitting behind him last year - pretty much no one! Pitchers focused on him once he was amassing numbers and it didn't matter. He was a MONSTER in August and September.

I talked to him in April '07 and he was simply happy to be ON the team. He wasn't playing much but was still beaming with joy, smiling and working hard EVERY day. He was smiling so much I nicknamed him "Cheese" because I thought he looked like he was posing for snapshots.

A lot can happen to a guy when he is confident and happy when he already HAS talent but hasn't put it all together. Joe Maddon loves him and maybe that's all Carlos needed - some TLC and a regular opportunity. He was like a mutt that was rescued from the pound.

His emergence allowed the Rays to move Ty Wigginton to second base before dealing him for Dan Wheeler (what a steal of a deal).

Something else that gets missed - Pena's glovework. He's smooth!

I think Carlos can absolutely put up 40+ HR and 110+ RBI again this year. The lineup is better and guess what? - He REALLY is a decent hitter with very good power!!

I don't think it was a fluke - I think it was a guy finally capitalizing on his potential in a situation that allowed him the comfort he needed to make "the leap". He wasn't getting those opportunities in Detroit, NY or Boston and he rewarded the Rays belief in him by signing a long term for less than he would have got on the open market.

Manny's right, confidence was the key to Pena's season. It's not like he hadn't hit 20 HR in the ML before, albeit in limited time. He's been one of those unfortunate souls to be stuck behind an All-Star, or be considered for a full time role then get hurt. Pena is legit as a player, although 46 HR is a stretch. I see him this year capping at about 35 or so. Still, not a bad number. PS: No chance Prince hits 50 again either, FYI.

good stuff guys and while I dont doubt Fielder could crack 50 again I just dont see why he is so legit and pena is a wonder yet so called "experts" say this.
