Another NHL legend hangs up the skates: Trevor Linden retires

Image:Linden.jpg As reported on the Vancouver Canucks website, Trevor Linden retired today from the National Hockey League, 20 years to the day after the Canucks drafted him with the #2 pick in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft.  Linden, the long-time face of the Canucks and a pillar of the Vancouver community, played all or part of 16 of his 19 seasons in the league with Vancouver.  The 38-year old Linden also played for the Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders and Washington Capitals.

Linden leaves professional hockey with 867 points (375g-492a) in 1,382 regular season games and had a strong playoff resume with 99 points and 104 penalty minutes in 124 playoff games.  Linden scored 30 or more goals 6 times, was a two-time NHL all-star, represented Canada in the 1998 Olympic Games, was the 1997 King Clancy Memorial Trophy award winner, and served as President of the NHL Players Association from 1998-2006.

More impressive than his overall career stats were his team stats with the Canucks.  Linden was given the captain's "C" at age 21, at the time becoming the youngest captain in the history of the NHL (since replaced by Sidney Crosby).  In his tenure with the Canucks, he became the all time team franchise leader in regular season games and assists and in playoff games, goals, assists, and points and is second in regular season goals and points (behind Markus Naslund in both categories).  Any true hockey fan, and certainly all Vancouver Canucks fans, will remember Linden's contributions to the game fondly.

“Today is an emotional and exciting day for me as an athlete and a person,” said Linden. “It closes one chapter of my life, my playing career, while opening up another which I am very much looking forward to. The game of hockey has been good to me and I would like to thank my family, former teammates, coaches, managers, support staff and the incredible fans that have been so generous in their support of my career.”

Definitely in the minds of all Canucks fans and also in the minds of a lot of other hockey fans. I think the legendary staus comes in this case from a combination of his playing and what he did for the game and what he meant to his community.

Community I get, leadership i get...

but what he did for the game, at least in my opinion doesn't merit, what I would consider legendary status...

but, that's your call ; - )

Fair enough, I definitely have to put all the pieces together before I go to such a lofty status. And I obviously agree he didn't change the game on the ice the way a Gretzky, Orr, etc did.

I fixed the title and enabled voting for you on this one.

I LOVED the Canucks from 91- 98 mostly because of Pavel, but also because they were a kick ass team on Sega NHL games.

Linden was a fine ambassador to the game.

He came up young and stayed too long - just like all the good ones tend to do...

Good luck in your pursuit of a media career, Trev!

Thanks Manny, still figuring out some of this stuff. I thought about putting in something about NHL'91 and the power of the Canucks but didn't...

Because that's the only version where Eric Lindros doesn't give himself a concussion by lacing his skates?

All I know is that EA's NHL 92-98 was the most dominant run in sports video game history. No other franchise can top that 7-year stretch -- not Madden, not NBA 2K, nobody.

It was almost unfair using the Canucks in NHL'93, kind of like Roenick in NHL'91 or Bo in Techmo Bowl.

When I first started following hockey as a kid, Trevor Linden was the only Canuck player I knew of. He was the face of that organization for many years. Happy trails Trevor.

Certainly Trevor Linden brought much to the game during his career, but it wasn't really well-publicized. Maybe because he was out in Vancouver. But he has obviously meant a lot that city and Canucks fans and undoubtedly will be remembered for a long time.

Linden never won a Stanley Cup title (and I would've been angry had he done so in 1994), but I'll still remember his heroics in the championship series. He scored both Vancouver goals in the memorable Game 7 at Madison Square Garden to keep Rangers fans biting their nails.

Oh believe me, I remember playing those EA Sports' NHL series of games with Linden in them as a Canuck. I had stayed up into the wee hours of the morning playing against my friends and dormmates. Good times, good times. They'd yell "Pavel Bure!" or "Linden scores!" or whatever. Too funny.

Best wishes to Trevor on a happy retirement from the game.

Amen to that, Linden helped guide the league through the lockout year as NHLPA President.
