And the Shallow Position is…..3B

It changes year to year, unless you count catcher that is. But hey, who counts catcher? Sure, Chase Utley is still better then any other second baseman but there is now a tier two and even decent tier three for second. Same for first and short, which leaves us with third base. Tier one is flat out nasty. Consisting of A-Rod, David Wright and Miguel Cabrera. All will be first rounder’s and all should be top ten picks. Tier two is also very solid, featuring a slue of third baseman that could easily perform as well as the tier one. However, they all come with question marks that keep them slightly below the three headed monster that is tier one. Tier two look’s as follow’s in no particular order(will save those for a separate article)

Tier 2 Ryan Braun, Chipper Jones, Aramis Ramirez, Garrett Atkins, Chone Figgins

Tier three is where it get’s tricky in your draft. You could end up with Ryan Zimmerman and probably feel good, but keep in mind he has been slow to recover from a wrist injury that required surgery. Next up, maybe you grab Mike Lowell or Alex Gordon. Well, Lowell set many career high’s last year (in a contract year) so expect some drop off and as for Gordon. He should be solid and he will be a stud, but is next year the year? Probably want to leave that gamble to some one else based on the pick you would have to spend to get him (adp reports him as 8th rounder in 15 team lqs). Tier three is as follows

Tier 3 Ryan Zimmerman, Mike Lowell, Alex Gordon, Adrian Beltre

Beyond Tier three is a sea of question mark’s. Guys like Eric Chavez, Troy Glaus, and Joe Crede. Sprinkle in some young players who show promise like Kevin Kouzmanoff and Mark Reynolds and you have a high risk/high reward at the hot corner. This is fine for a Corner Infielder, but should not happen for a starting third base man.

What does all this mean? My advice to dealing with the scarcity of the position it to do one of two things. First, if you are picking in a spot in the first round where either of the big three are available grab one, if it is a toss up at your pick between them and either OF/1B. Next, if your first round pick falls after the top tier is gone you need to grab a tier two in the third round. Now some may feel that this is a round or two to early for say Jones or Atkins. However if you wait and grab from a deeper slot you maybe starting a tier three who dos not pan out, all year long. Some fantasy players have already identified this trend as well. The evidence can be seen in ADP reports. All of tier two 3B have moved up a round at least. So be mindful and remember you are building a team, not filling out an all star ballot. So draft for need and scarcity to really allow yourself to push a positional edge all year. Trust me, I know the urge to grab B.J. Upton in the third is hard to resist. But, I also know that Atkins and Weeks are a much better bet heading into the year then Upton and Beltre.

ummmm... no... again... sorry...

Rodriguez, Wright, Cabrera may be ahead of the others, but Ramirez, Braun, Zimmerman, Fields, Lowell, Jones, Beltre, Gordan, Figgins, Atkins, Reynolds, or Kouzmanoff are all justifiable fantasy starters...

plus you forgot (or I missed it)... everyone's early prediction for ROY Evan Longoria...

This is not a shallow position... espically compared to second base (stronger than in years past but is still really weak), catcher of course, and (in my opinion) outfield (which gets weak around the third outfield spot)...

Akinori Iwamura (Aki) at second (a position he is made for)

Longoria at third. Even if Longoria doesn't start in the bigs, Joel Guzman will hold third down until Evan is ready. Bartlett will start at short and Ben Zobrist will play utility role.

The Rays are gonna be so stacked for a long time!

Iwamura.

That is the plan. The Rays have been non-committal on Longoria starting the season in Tampa, with the reason being they don't know how well Iwamura will adapt to second base. Iwamura did DH some towards the end of last season, as a stop-gap measure the Rays may go that route if Longoria has a big spring.

Ben Zobrist, the player [User:Manny Stiles|referred]] to above, is a good field, no hit shortstop who missed all of last season with an injury. With Jason Bartlett in Tampa and future stud Reid Brignac in Triple A, Zobrist is a backup at best, if Iwamura is the DH, then Zobrist may play second.

Aki will play second. He has amazing lower body control. He's the only baseball player I've ever seen where his flexibility and just plain natural reactions were so smooth it was stunning. He's a special player and will handle 2b JUST FINE. He's a .300-.320 slap hitter who might end up leading off because Carl wants to hit lower in the order.

This is nothing. Bartlett is a one year fill in until Reid Brignac is ready. The Rays will have the best left side of the infield in the majors within two to three years. Both those guys are that good.

guys in a keeper lg all good points...but r u really willing to put your eggs in the basket of longoria this yr? See alex gordon last yr. Still stud but take the proven thing. And sure Beltre is solid at third. But like I said is he as productive as any of tier 2? No ad certainly not tier one. But hey if you do not abide to a tier system so be it.

I've seen both Longoria and Gordon play in person, and, yes, I will put all my eggs in the basket.

Gordon was expected to do much more than he did, but Braun overachieved in most people's eyes, so it's a wash.

This is your article, Mike, and I agree with you. After the top five or six, the drop-off in talent is significant. Longoria is no more a risk than Eric Chavez or Pedro Feliz or Hank Blalock.

Bet your ass I'm taking him, and early so I won't lose him.

you aren't the only one with Longoria high on your list... the key to fantasy is the minors... Verlander, Zimmerman, Liriano, Braun... drafted them all (even though I had to drop Braun for a few weeks before he came back up)... Kelsdad, you know exactly what I am talking about

On June 1st Alex Gordon was hitting .164, he ended at .247, which still sucks. But he had to hit almost .290 the last four months just to get there.

I'm a Gordon fan too, there are parts of his game I like better than Longoria's.

Is it possible Longoria could have a Gordon type start? Sure.

Is it possible he could have a Braun type season? Again, sure.

Like Falcon said, stock up on another weak position (2B, C). To me, the only 3Bman worthy of a first round pick is ARod, and unless you have the first overall pick you ain't getting him. Pick up a Zimmerman or Atkins in the fourth or fifth round, then get Gordon or Longoria late, everything they do is gravy.

first. We are talking about leaving a draft here not pick ups. Second the margin between the bottom of the barrel of 3b is diff then 2b. You can live with mark ellis in a late round. But how can u leave a draft and feel good about starting an unknown/unproven. If you want to stash Longoria/Kennedy/Laroche type on your bench that is a sound move. But to be starting them on day one! madness

We're not talking about some overachieving little runt who likely had his career season last year. We're talking a potential .300+ hitter with 30 homers, 20-25 steals and 100+ runs and ribbies. You don't bench those numbers, unproven rookie or not. And the guys who were smart enough to pick up Ryan Braun when he was called up were far better off than the guys who waited two weeks to see if he was for real or not.

Kels...you are missing the core point here my fried. I wrote this article pertaining to leaving a draft. This has nothing to do with waiver wire pick up's. What I am saying is that the margin heading into the year at 3b is wider then any other posistion. Consider that Aaron Hill/Mark Ellis are the 15th optioon at 2b. Neither a stud but far from team killer. At 3b Glaus is 15th. Do you want to pencil in glaus? also think about the edge the guy starting a tier one or tier two is pushing on your team every day.

Could be, could be. If Troy Glaus is #15 at third, and Mark Ellis or Aaron Hill is #15 at second, then doesn't that make second base a more shallow position than third?

suprinsgly not. If you look at there lines last yr you will see, while they are not world breakers neither kills you in any stat

Ellis:.276/19/84/76/9 Hill: .291/17/87/78/4

now while glaus may hit 30 hr if you can get 500 ab from him he is still going to kill u in avg n provide no speed. Also the drop from tier one to glaus is much more dramatic the tier one to Ellis/Hill. Also guys like Kaz Matsui and Luis castillo provide value.

Why are you showing links of Ian Stewart who is on the Rockies, while Kaz Matsui is on the Astros. I guess if Stewart can steal Matsui's job from across the country that would be a pretty huge feat.
