About the Author

Mike Frangione has engaged himself in the noble calling of sportswriting over the years (1991-1997, and again in 2007), enjoying two stints covering (stringing) High School sports for my local newspaper in South Jersey. That was a great learning experience and also a great deal of fun.

An Open Letter to the Phillies: Get Yer Heads Outta Yer Butts!

Come on Phillies! That pretty much sums up my reaction to what my radio was telling me yesterday. A no-hitter? To Dave Bush? Who is 44-46 for his six year career? At least they had the decency to wrap it all up before I even got home from work!

No disrespect to Bush, but - come on!!! What the hell's up with the Phillies?

Here are two statements that emphasize my level of negativity toward them at this moment:

1) Ryan Howard went 0-4 last night...but at least he didn't strike out. Yay! What a consolation.

2) I am not even going to moan about their LOB numbers.

You lollygag to first! You lollygag to second! You know what that makes you? A sorely underwhelming and uninspiring team!

And Phillies fans are funny. We're conditioned to bring out all the usual cliches and reasons why it's okay that the Phillies aren't looking like defending World Series champs right now.

  • Cliche/Reason: It's April. They always start slow.
  • Retort: Not always. If I am remembering correctly, they started 17-5 in 1993 and never looked back. Last year, they posted a winning April (15-13) - barely.
  • Cliche/Reason: They're a warm weather team.
  • Retort: Who isn't? And...since when? They're not a warm weather team from a geographic perspective. And don't give me that a lot of the guys are from California. Most of the guys on the team have at least one year of playing baseball in crummy Northeast weather. And if you're not a cold weather team, how on Earth did you win the World Series??? Newsflash: Baseball is played in April, May, September and October - none of these are summer months.
  • Cliche/Reason: It's a marathon, not a sprint. There's still 148 games to go.
  • Retort: Well, you're 6-8 with six games left in April - three against the Marlins (11-4) and three against the Nationals (3-11). And before any aspersions are cast at the Nationals, let me point out that the Phils are only three games better than them right now.

I don't want to hear it. I get the impression that the Phillies fans in general are okay with how things are going. I do not necessarily agree. A saving grace is that the Mets are also struggling. But Florida ain't.

And just because the lowly Pirates just finished a sweep of the Marlins, that don't (or shouldn't) mean diddly for the Phils. After all, before that series, the Marlins were cruising along at 11-1.

Clearly, I don't expect Florida to keep up a pace like this, but, honestly, I doubt I am the only one who believes that the Phillies going into Florida playing like they are now could really turn this season on it's ear. It's very likely that the Marlins could emerge with a sweep.

Time to wake up Phillies. Time to forget about that trophy and concentrate on the 2009 season. Sadly, their pitchers have given up at least one homer in every game this season. Ryan Braun feasted on Phillies pitching, batting .800, slamming three homers and driving in six.

I'm not giving up or renouncing my Phillies fandom. I'm far too committed for that. Go Phils! But they're really pissing me off right now.

A three game sweep in Florida would go a long way to repairing my fractured confidence in them.

All well and good. And nice to celebrate. But the party's over. This is 2009. I mean, should we dig up a picture of the 1980 ring and use that to justify 27 years of no championships?

I don't diminish the 2008 World Series. That was awesome. But 6-9...that ain't gonna cut it if you plan to have a shot at repeating.

honestly, the "cliches" you're citing as "not good enough reasons" are things I'm fine with...Honestly, they never play well an April. Howard's never on balance, Utley is recovering from major surgery and there pitching staff is (as it was) still pretty mediocre

A) Contrary to Ryan Howard's numbers, if you watch him play, you'd realize he hasn't really hit a stride...if anything he's getting stats in spite of his play (though his defense has improved)

B) Utley's still hurt...he's played well and the power will come

C) Ibanez has more than replaced Burrell - I like Pat, but its a fact

D) The starting pitching staff is who we thought it was (and we let 'em off the hook!). I mean Hamels (injured - sorta) - Myers - Blanton - Moyer - Park/Happ/Carrasco? Really?

E) Romero is out till June on some bullshit suspension (FREE JC!) and that's hurt the Phils pen - he's their best pitcher in the Pen (whaaaa? Brad Lidge...watch him last year...dude was a heart attack). Beyond that, Eyre and Taschner are hardly dependable lefties (in fact, the phils left handed bullpen is all castoffs when you think for a second). The pen's really killed them and the SPs haven't helped.

But again...dude, it's April - I'll be happy with .500. They do need to win games

That last bit - they need to win games....that's all I'm tryin' to say.

Funnily enough, I'm not worried about Utley or Howard -I know they'll knock in runs. It's mostly the pitching that has me on edge. And Ibanez has been great. I miss Pat, and then again, I don't.

Actually, I think D21D mentioned it last year - the Phillies pitching staff, specifically the starters, outperformed at every major level. I mean, Moyer has as many wins as Johan Santana and a sub-4 ERA (HE's FORTY FREAKIN' SIX!!!), Hamels was unhittable in September and on, Myers came back effectively, Fat Joe was also solid (and had that home run) and Happ even pitched well...

The whole staff looked awful for the first week and each (except Hamels) has improved with each game (for the most part)...but isn't that normal?

The offensive has been consistently inconsistent (again - normal) but they need to find ways to win games in April because we know what they can do over the Summer...

I was. The Phillies when I was a kid featured Schmidt, Carlton, Rose, Maddox, Bowa...I'm thinking they'd have been pretty disgusted with 6-8.

I'm not asking for a lot...8-6 would be fine.

Look at you loser Philly fans...already whining like the hyenas you are...you should go boo Santa while you're at it. My internship here is up in a few months and I can't wait to go back to God's country aka Southern California. The weather, women, and attitudes stink out here. Go Dodgers!!!

There's no whining here. Just making some frank observations about a great team. There's nothing wrong with some tough love. Sometimes you can only cure by cutting...

Philly fans do something that fans from all the other cities can't understand or appreciate. They aren't whining. Thye aren't booing for the sake of booing. They aren't bitching and moaning. Philly fans "get it". It's a true blue-collar town. Sweat a little; get dirty; show some hustle - ALL the time; especially after winning a championship. You can't just get to the mountaintop in Philly, you keep climbing bigger mountains! Philly fans just want more effort and therefore results from their teams. There's no excuse for a lack of effort or production in Philadelphia. And when you fail to give 110,000%, they will LET YOU KNOW IT.

I think SJ is saying he would even be ok with a losing record if they were outmanned and giving all they had and still losing. This roster, these players should not be with a losing record IN ANY MONTH.

I used to say that "booing your team is like calling your girlfriend 'ugly'". In most places that is true. Philly fans are just screaming, "hey girlfriend! You're hot when you try but when you start thinking you're so pretty that you don't try, it makes you pretty damned ugly."

It's a damned fine article, SJ. Lucky for you, some of us understand the motivation behind it... (plus I'm a Rays fan and they are in a different yet similar boat - they are giving decent effort, but running into aces on their game and not getting the breaks)

Thanks! What you say is true...I just see a team that is better than some of the teams they are losing to. I really do believe that the fans just want them to go out and play. It's no secret why Philly fans still revere the 1993 team. You don't get more scrappy and blue collar than that. And the town loved them!

I'm not a Phillies fan and I loved that team!!! I must've gone to 20 games that year... (only one of which was a sellout by the way)

But growing up in Philly for the first 26 years of my life then moving away for nearly 10 years, I still have to explain to people about the "mentality". People in the rest of the U.S. are a little "off" if you ask me! You can take the boy out of Philly, but you can't take the Philly out of the boy. (Man, I miss Wawa and Yuengling and sometimes Lebanon Bologna)

I really really wish I would have gone to that Padres doubleheader. Around 1 in the morning me and my buddies were considering driving down and catching game 2. We passed because none of use were sober enough to drive and watched it on TV. I still remember what the room looked and smelled like when Mitch Williams got the game winning hit.

honestly, other than today, they bats didn't look good

but like I said, its about wins, not looking good. All of that offensive production will come along

fortunately, the mets have also struggled and they just swept the other (supposedly) good team in the Marlins...personally, I rate them below the Braves (who are the team I almost fear the most)

There is much truth to this. I think that the '75/'76 Reds were the last NL team to repeat. I'd just like to see the Phils play good baseball and get to the playoffs again. Then, anything can happen. But the playing good baseball needs to happen first.
