About the Author

Sj-hypocycloid
Mike Frangione has engaged himself in the noble calling of sportswriting over the years (1991-1997, and again in 2007), enjoying two stints covering (stringing) High School sports for my local newspaper in South Jersey. That was a great learning experience and also a great deal of fun.

Al Davis Gets Me To Thinking...

...And it's not in a good way...of course. Apologies to Raiders fans, as I am about to generalize and bash your fearless owner.

I'm sitting here enjoying the Steelers/Ravens slugfest (heh) and ESPN breaks away for an update. They tell me that the Chisox have won and earned the right to battle Minnesota for the AL Central. Cool.

Then they tell me that Al Davis is interviewing candidates to replace Lane Kiffin as Raiders head coach.

Come to Work for the Raiders!

Then for a second, I wondered...I heard about Linehan. Did I miss an announcement? Nope - Kiffin's still the coach.

Now that's class. Davis is interviewing coaches and he still has a coach. Any coach who would actually take part in something this scummy deserves to be the coach of the Raiders. I'm not surprised that Davis would do this...I'm surprised that any worthwhile coaching candidate would do this.

Perhaps it's just me. I'm sure I'll get condescending comments like "That's the nature of modern football, dude. Get over it."

But I don't think I will (get over it, I mean). This situation stinks...and whether or not Kiffin is a good coach...Davis hired him! Kiffin should at least get the 'privelege' of finishing the season without having some withered, leathery asswipe undermining him and disrespecting him so openly.

As if I needed any reasons to dislike the Raiders. May there be many more 1-15 seasons in their future. How the mighty have fallen.

Davis proves to be a classless individual. This is not the nature of modern football.

here: "That's the nature of modern football, dude. Get over it."

Do you really think Davis is going to get any quality coach now? Maybe D Green or R Kotite is available. Rumor has it M Millan is about to sign on. Quality guys there.

Besides how can you feel sorry for Kiffin. He knew exactly what he was getting into when he signed his muli-million dollar contract. Its real tough to feel bad for a guy making that kind of money.

I hope Kiffin gets fired so the AD at Syacuse can hire him and ruin Syacuse for another couple of years. It'll continue to help my college team.

I never said I felt sorry for Kiffin - "and whether or not Kiffin is a good coach" - this was more a comment on Davis being a fool. Hiring Kiffin in the first place was pretty dumb. But it is par for the course for Al. "Just tailspin, baby."

This was inevitable, wasn't it? Yahoo reports that Kiffin has been fired. I feel sorry for Raider fans. It's got to be an uphill battle.

I was told a funny story by a guy who was a D-lineman who played for the Raiders in the 90's. During his first week of training camp, the linemen were getting screamed at by their coaches on their technique.

"Do it this way!" the coach screamed.

Along comes Al Davis, dressed in leather and as foul mouthed as a sailor while the rookie was doing his drills exactly as he was instructed. Davis gets down on the ground with the rookie and begins his f-word fueled rant about how to do the drills RIGHT - in other words, exactly opposite of how the coach was just screaming at him.

The rookie pauses and looks at the coach who screams at the rookie to "Ephing do what the owner ephing says, ephing rookie!"

So the rookie does the drill just like Al said and Al tells him "You ephing listen to ephing me ephing rookie and I'll ephing make sure you ephing stay in this ephing league a long ephing time!" and Davis walks away pleased...

As soon as Davis is gone, the coach got right back in the rookie's ear and made him do the drill the way he told him to the first time. He says "the man owns the team so you do it like he wants when he's around, but when he's not around, you do it the RIGHT way!"

That's the kind of issues the employees of Mr. Davis have to contend with... again, this was in the early '90's!!!

The player - who also played for two other storied teams and owners and had a 12 year career - said he had nothing but utmost respect for "Mr. Davis" and actually admired the maverick style of the owner. But he's crass, loud, anbnoying and a relic in today's game - but don't be fooled - the guy knows what it takes to win.

I think, based on the past 5 seasons, that it's safe to say that the guy USED to know what it takes to win.

As much respect as Al Davis gets for what he has done over the years and commitment to winning, it dosen't erase the fact that his latest actions are a detriment to the team's success in the near future. Unless this O-Line coach does a real swell job, Russell and Mcfadden will now have to adapt to a new system next year..and that's not good for their development.

Despite his current idiocy, he is a prominent figure in NFL history, and was a very good coach/owner back in the day. It's too bad that he's tarnishing his and his teams legacies.

He was the George Steinbrenner of the NFL... except better... kinda... Al Davis is the real reason the AFL stuck around for good, not Joe Namath.

I never thought bringing Lane into this position was the right thing to do, but sending him out the way Davis did was insult to injury and par for the course.
