Adding Four Teams To NFL Playoff

1/7/08 12:05 PM NOTE: I'll admit as a diehard Eagles fan, seeing my team sent home during the playoffs led me to suggest the ridiculous. I'm sure Browns fans can relate.

The National Football League is currently the only major sports league that rewards top teams with a one round playoff bye. However, it has recently been discussed what the NFL would be like if two teams from each conference were added to make each team play the first week of the playoffs. Teams would fight equally as hard to face teams such as the Texans or Browns rather than the Jaguars or Chargers as they would a first round bye. This system would create greater competition throughout the year and lead teams who begin the season on a poor streak to remain optimistic and not simply fall back in hopes of a higher draft pick. All but eight teams would have remained in the playoff hunt late into the year, creating an overally more competitive playoff race. Teams with worse records would be admitted leading some to argue the level of play in the playoffs would be lowered, but in this scenario, the four teams admitted all remained competitive, knocking off multiple higher seeds throughout the regular season.

Here's what the 2007 NFL Playoffs would have looked like under this system with the division winners are awarded the top four seeds.

Patriots (16-0) vs. Texans (8-8)- Houston would have received their first playoff berth

Colts (13-3) vs. Browns (10-6)- Browns return to the playoffs in this midwest showdown

Chargers (11-5) vs. Titans (10-6)

Steelers (10-6) vs. Jaguars (11-5)

Cowboys (13-3) vs. Vikings (8-8)- Adrian Peterson is given an opportunity to continue his record breaking year against the number one seed in the NFC

Packers (13-3) vs. Eagles (8-8)- Rematch of the 2004 Divisional Playoff game that included the famous "4th and 26" play

Seahawks (10-6) vs. Redskins (9-7)

Buccaneers (9-7) vs. Giants (10-6)

Do mediocre teams like the Texans or Browns really deserve a shot at winning a title? I don't really see how letting half the league fight for a chance in the playoffs enhances the game. That's what they did in 4th grade soccer...

The Steelers won the Super Bowl as a wild card, I don't see why the possibility of upsetting a top seed early on is such a bad thing.

We already have a wild card. In fact, we have two in each league. We don't need four more. Besides, the Steelers were an 11-5 team at the end of the regular season. The teams this new format would allow are nowhere remotely close to that good.

Then again the Vikings knocked off the Chargers and Giants, the Eagles beat the Cowboys and Redskins and came within three points of the Patriots with a backup quarterback, the 10-6 Browns beat the Steelers and Seahawks, I mean you can call them mediocre by their record, but they all are competitive.

Yeah, but in the NFL every team is fairly competitive. The 4-win Jets beat the Steelers, the 4-win Chiefs beat the Chargers, the 5-win Ravens beat the Steelers and had the Pats in their grasp, the 4-win Falcons beat the Seahawks and your Texans. Upsets happen all the time, but if you let half the teams in the NFL get a shot at a championship, you devalue the importance of winning in the regular season. It's not a bad thought, I just don't agree.

I agree with Bobbyjim. Any team can get lucky and win because of a particular matchup on any given week. That doesn't mean they deserve to be in the playoffs.

The Steelers lost to the Jags two days ago. Now I have to wait until next September to watch them. The only thing I have to get me through is that the Steelers swept the Brownies once again.

I think the 12 team playoff works perfectly. It's tough to get into the playoffs, but with this system there have never been massive complaints about a team getting "robbed" of a playoff berth. The top teams in the league are rewarded with a week off, which is vital in football, especially if the team's regular season bye came in week 4. Adding 4 teams to the playoffs might add to the excitement of the last 2 weeks of the season, but it might take away from the excitement of the previous 15 weeks. And you'd inevitably get 8-8 and 7-9 teams making the playoffs

I felt the Titans truly deserved a playoff berth after finishing so strong with Vince Young at the helm especially over a couple of the lower seeds I mean the Giants made it in 2006 with an 8-8 record as did the Vikings and Rams in '04

Absolutely not. Having too many playoff teams has made a laughing stock out of the NHL and NBA playoffs. The NFL playoffs are perfect as-is. The Redskins shouldn't have even been in the playoffs, let alone the Eagles and the Vikings. Adding teams would be a HORRIBLE idea.

It seems to me that part of your premise is that the Bye week for the top two seeds is unfair. Why not cut out the wildcards completely and start the playoffs with a divisional round? 4 Divisions = 4 Playoff teams.

That would never happen. The NFL makes too much money with the added round.

We already have teams at .500 making the playoffs. If you extend the field, you will have teams with losing records in the playoffs. It happened in the NHL.

There is no way that a team that loses more games than it wins deserves to be in the playoffs. You just trivialized the regular season.

I'm not sure if you noticed it but in your new playoff system, all four teams from the NFC East would be in the playoffs which I think is a strong statement for that division.

Why change something that works perfectly fine. The Wild Card exists to allow teams like the Chargers, Steelers, Giants, Redskins, etc, etc (for this year) a chance to play in the superbowl. Now you add 4 more teams. All this will do is downplay the regular season. I like how the top teams get a bye week. I like how things are. Why do we have to keep screwing around with things? Leave it alone. Hey I got an idea... in baseball let's have 10 innings be a normal game now. In hockey let's play 2 30 minutes periods instead. In basketball let's once again change the ball, this time to one that's half the size, in soccer let's allow 2 goalies to play on the same time at the same time, in NASCAR let's eliminate pit stops, in bowling let's make the ball white and the pins black.....

I totally agree. I don't think this would make the whole regular season more exciting. Only the last week or two, MAYBE. It might make it even less interesting, because you might have 8-8 teams resting starters for the playoffs.

I also have another idea. Let's allow every team in the playoffs. Why not? Top seed plays bottom seed. More games, more profit, more beer consumed, more commercials to be seen. Actually let's make the NFL like college and play a bunch of different bowl games. When the team gets eliminated in the playoffs they can play another team who has been eliminated and the can play a bowl game. Call it the Budweiser Bowl, the Coors Light Bowl, the Pepsi Bowl, the Subway Bowl. Let's make football year round and only give the players 2 weeks off for the year. Let's whore it out as much as possible. YEAH BABY YEAH!

It's okay Ccampbell34. It's hard when your team doesn't make the playoffs and you have to hear your stupid friends bug you and tease you and harrass you because their retarded team is still playing (and even worse winning). "Yeah man Brady rocks man, New England all the way" hooting and rollering like a monkey (Britney Spears) on crack. It's disgusting isn't it? Maybe the Eagles and the Dolphins could play in the Flutie Flake Bowl?
