Spent eight years working for a daily rag, ventured into the internet realm managing wrestling media sites and now, entering the television fray. I prefer not to take myself seriously and enjoy watching sports, but I'm a cynic about the NBA (because it sucks), but I love college roundball. I travel the country covering an under-appreciated sport for little reward other than doing something I love with my own rules.

A quick chat with Former Gopher Shelton Benjamin

I forgot to eat lunch at the proper time. I realize this is hard for many to believe, because A) I like eating and B) I’m usually right at lunch around noon or within 15 minutes of it. Today wasn’t quite the same, I was responding to some internet chatter when I realized it was almost 2 p.m.

Instead of hitting the Subway about a block up the street, I decided to hop in the car and drive over to Dinkytown, an area next to the University of Minnesota with shops and cafes and some decent fare. I decided on Qdoba and a mammouth Ancho Chile Chicken Burrito. Stuffed. As in, the burrito and myself. One is all you need.

After leaving, I stopped by the Gopher wrestling office to mill around and just make small talk on my way to the office. Coach J Robinson’s wife is in a triathlon in Hawaii, and as a supportive husband, he’s there grueling along with the travel (yeah, no trip to Hawaii is grueling, unless it’s coming back and it’s Snakes on a Plane).

I was greeted by Joe Russell, who immediately introduced me to Shelton Benjamin. A pleasant surprise. I’d never met Shelton. When Coach Russell put the start on practice, I got a chance to just chit chat with Shelton and it was rather enlightening.

Shelton Benjamin was a two-time NCAA Division I Wrestling All-American at the University of Minnesota.
Shelton Benjamin was a two-time NCAA Division I Wrestling All-American at the University of Minnesota.

Like many first-timers in wrestling, Shelton had recalled his first wrestling practice and how he thought it would be like the stuff he saw on TV. “I remember watching John Smith win the Gold in 1992 on TV, but still thought what was on TV was wrestling,” he said.

A two-time All-American at Minnesota, Benjamin has been a popular star in the WWE, or as we refer to it in the college game, “the fake stuff.” Now, I grew up watching this on TV. I have pictures with the Rock-N-Roll Express, Chief Wahoo McDaniel, the Dynamic Dudes … and even a more recent one with Scott Steiner. I often had friends yell at me for being a “real” wrestling writer and watching “the fake stuff” on Monday nights.

Benjamin had a similar story.

“Even in college, when it was Monday, I was watching RAW,” he said. “They always asked me why I watched it, but then try to change the channel …”

Wrestling purists around the country, save Mike Chapman, will tend to look down upon amateur wrestlers who “sell out” for the money and hopeful fame of the WWE. This is apparent with the public perception of 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle. Commonly, detractors will say he didn’t give back, or isn’t giving back, or is making a mockery of his medal. Some type of high and mighty judgement on an athlete who accomplished the top goals in college and international wrestling — NCAA titles and an Olympic Gold.

Who are we to judge. I was impressed by Shelton based on just 15-20 minutes of conversation. I had some basic questions as it related to my past with “the fake stuff,” mainly about travel, any references to college wrestling from fans and the “mark” terminology.

Obviously he wasn’t there to give an interview, so I didn’t fire question after question about the correlations between college wrestling and the WWE’s brand of sports entertainment.

Current Gopher heavyweight Ben Berhow approached and gave Shelton a handshake — Berhow obviously shook Benjamin’s hand out of respect as a Gopher wrestler rather than a TV persona. Prior to practice, Russell told of Minnesota’s improbably win over Iowa in Carver-Hawkeye 10 or 11 years ago. Benjamin got the fall in the last match to give the Gophers a one-point dual win. Russell still tells that story with a big smile.

Benjamin’s simple swing through the wrestling office didn’t get any press, in fact, it would have gone completely unnoticed had I not dropped by on my way back to the office. But things like this, they don’t get press, they’re not meant to get press, does this mean those former college wrestling stars don’t give back and remember their roots? I think this proves just because we don’t read about it or see it first hand, doesn’t mean they don’t give back. I’m wondering if Angle swings through Clarion’s room from time to time, or stops in to talk to the wrestlers at Mt. Lebanon High School in the Pittsburgh area. We don’t hear about it, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.

I can’t give a review of Shelton Benjamin in just 20 minutes, but you can see how grateful he is to have come from such a program. College wrestling gave Benjamin the opportunity to get into the WWE. It’s giving wrestlers chances to get into MMA, it’s giving wrestlers a chance to work towards making an Olympic team.

Let’s remember wrestling has given so much to teachers, coaches, mentors, fire-fighters, police officers, actors … so why do we chastise those who pick another form of entertainment? There isn’t much that’s “real” about pro wrestling … they know that, I know that, but why do the detractors seem to eliminate that fact. Let them make a living as the best one-take actors in the business. It’s athletic, and you can’t go one match without Jim Ross or Jerry Lawler mentioning the college background of Shelton Benjamin everytime he steps in the ring.

That does, in its own way, expose the sport of college and high school wrestling to a bigger audience on a Monday night than we think.

Dude...he's the Gold Standard

I enjoy WWE for what it is, entertainment. Bash it all you want, but is it any different than watching any other live TV?

Try a live event and I guarantee the moment you embrace it is the moment you'll enjoy it.

I'm certainly not bashing it, but this is directed at those who will take shots at the stuff for having former college wrestlers "sell out" and not stay in coaching or some low-dollar career.

Sure... Well, in my opinion, there's a lot of people who simply aren't suited for coaching. The same applies to people to become pro-wrestlers. Sure they have similar demographics (AKA athletic folks) but its not like every college wrestler becomes a "pro" wrestler...I mean obviously more don't than do. Besides, you have to be a decent actor and bodybuilder too...

Guys like this PROMOTE college wrestling, they are far from being sell-outs.

Rachael Ray is arguably the face of the Food Network, yet she can't cook to save her life. It's all about perception.

Mr. Benjamin will always have the tag NCAA champion next to his name, and if he's introduced that way every night in front of 17,000 screaming wrestling fans, isn't that the point?

Welcome back, Mat...

Rachel Ray is an idiot. I wish she would crash her car into Tim McCarver's and rid the world of the two most annoying voices ever broadcasted.

I'm not insinuating anthing. She's an idiot.

If she asks me to smell something through my TV "OOH Smell that, it's yummers") or says "Look at that!" when it's the ONLY THING I CAN SEE one more time!!!.... I just can't stand her. She is dumbening the populous and should go to jail for it. She can say the whole proper name of "parmesan reggiano" in an italian accent EVERY TIME and MUST say "E.V.O.O.; that stands for Extra Virgin Olive Oil" five times a show yet can't say the whole word "Delicious". I just want to punch a few dozen times, that's all..

Not even gettting naked would make her not-irritating.

I'm sorry, She's the only person I despise on TV more than Tim McCarver - which is unbelievable because my mute button egts a LOT of exercise... it's a hot topic with me. I'm done.

No. And they do it on purpose. They don't want to entertain the people who know their shit, they want to numb the minds of the passers by because those are the idiots that will pay attention to the onslaught of commercials. FOX doesn't educate viewers, it sells it's products to viewers.

But hey they have a totally hip robot! As a Panther fan, we routinely get the dregs of the announcing teams, who routinely get people's names wrong and fail to notice things like a team's starting QB limping around the field for an entire quarter.

Rachel Ray is torturous. Ray comes up with disgusting things that aren't really 30 minutes and Manny hit the nail on the head. And how many times per show must she say she likes playing in food?

No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain is the way to go if you want a good food show (on the Travel Channel). PLEASE don't watch Andrew Zimmern's show though.

FOX has one good announcing team, and that is the complete silence I hear with the occasional technical difficulty. I have no idea how Rosario Dawson is playing for the Panthers, FOX.

Rosario Dawson was a flash in the pan. She had ten receptions in game one and must've gone on a Lohan-esque bender, because she hasn't made a single catch since. She's like our secret weapon DE Julius Peters, who looks like Julius Peppers but actually made plays. he hasn't been seen since the Minnesota game.

Hey, you need to be a pretty decent athlete to "act" in the WWE, there's no two ways about it. It's a quality entertainment product and people clearly enjoy it.

Good for him! If you have a talent, make it shine - in any and every forum you can or want to!

Another fine piece of work, IM, I mean... BDub!!!

A big part of the reason I know longer count myself as a wrestling fan (although I'd be lying if I said I didn't flip over now and again), is because of the owner. Of course, I like the Bobcats, so maybe I shouldn't discount the WWE.

No offense taken. I've been to an infinite amount more WNBA games than Wrestling events. Since I turned 14 I've also watched an infinite amount of Women's sports compared to Pro Wrestling... call me crazy.

I respect wrestlers - especially "actual" wrestling. Fake or Real, it takes a real athlete and takes a lot of dedication that other athletes couldn't give...

To hold a sport down because you don't like the owner? It's not the participant's faults their boss is a douche. I applaud people's efforts MORE when they work for a dick-tator like Vince McMahon or George Steinbrenner or a incompetent fool out of his element like Bobcat Johnson...

It takes something from a person to put up with that - I couldn't do it and I admire people who do things I could never.

In my opinion, out of the guys I have watched in the WWE, Shelton Benjamin is definitely up there in the most talented technical wrestlers in the business. He has great athleticsm and talent; the fact that he was 36-6 in college and the fact he was a two-time all-American says enough right there. He was also 122-10 in high school.

In WWE.com, they are actually considering him to the greatest athletic WWE superstar of all time!

As a Mt. Lebanon Graduate I can say Kurt Angle did in fact come back through several times after he one his gold medal. I would also like to point out that before he won the gold he was frequently dropping in and talking with the guys. Every year he would host a "free" clininc in the highschool in hopes of collecting donations to fund his olympic training. He was always very approachable and on the last day of the clinic he would wrestle ANYONE and everyone that wanted to. It is kinda fun when I see him on TV and thinking back to when I got to wrestle him. So, as far as I am concerned he put his time in before he became famous, he deserves everything that has come his way.
