A Magical Dethroning of King James

On Sunday night, the magic was in the air. Everything fell into play for Orlando, as King James succumb to the myths that his skills laid out before he entered the NBA as a thriving star. In the 89-99 Cleveland's loss to the Orlando Magic, King James was made to give back his crown and was demoted to just another NBA prince.

Playing against the Magic, James has proved to be a great individual player. Luckily for me, he isn't a great team player. The fact remains the same: great team players win championships and the others are just the greatest without a ring (second best).

In this basketball era where everyone bows down to the Cleveland god, the King James naysayers are proving to be accurate.

I have always said that James outside shot is spotty. His ability to make his teammates better is completely missing. His ability to make game winning shots is rare. All the stats from Tuesday’s night game against the Magic proved all of this.

James scored 41 points on 8 for 20 shooting, a mere 40% shooting for the league MVP. Above that, he only made one shot outside of the paint. That shot was so close to the free throw line that you could have mistaken it for a charity shot. If the Magic hadn't fouled him so much, he wouldn't have shot 24 times from the free-throw line and he wouldn’t have scored those 41 points.

And scoring 40 points doesn't make anyone a champion if they aren't winning ball games. If James wants to make it to the NBA Finals, he better learn how to make his teammates better while putting up 40 points every night. He has a lot of work to do by the next game.

Thus far, James has scored 125 point or roughly 43% of the Cavaliers points this series. His teammates have only scored about 251 points. It turns out that they only worry about lauding King James instead of making a decent contribution to the team.

Oh well, I like to be right. King James will be the Charles Barkley of this era if he doesn't learn how to make his teammates better.

Good luck to the Orlando Magic. They have more heart and skill than I thought they had. But, Howard did say, "We fight till the end." If James was smart, he will adopt that very saying because his legacy will be determined by if he can win a championship. His legacy is slowly slipping away.

All hail to the former King James. He was be sadly missed. Wink, wink!

The league MVP runner-up shot 10-26, good for 38%.

What?! You mean the man who has been averaging nearly a triple double throughout the season is not making his teammates better? I think TNT showed a statistic that displayed that his teammates are shooting 30 something percent from the field off of his passes. It's not his fault that Delonte West, Mo Williams, and Zydrunas Ilgauskas are wide open and missing badly on jumpers.

Which goes double for Kobe Bryant. Depending on tonight's result, we could see LeBron and Kobe have their series tied at 2-2. Has Kobe not put up at least 34 points in every game this series yet has just a 2-2 record? If you want to talk about LeBron, then talk about Kobe's failures with a superior big man corp.

I have always said that James outside shot is spotty.

There is no way you can use 1 bad game out of 11 games to justify your point. In the first 2 games he was hitting nearly every jump shot imaginable. In game 1 I am confident he hit 6 of them in a row. He had a "sub-par" game in the form of a near 40-10-10 output.

You seem to have some sort of weird vendetta towards LeBron James. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's your opinion after all. But when you bring up the stats to disprove a player's greatness, don't base it off 1 game while saying something a while back that Kobe is better than LeBron because he makes his teammates better when all statistics the past two or three years proves otherwise.

I also wanted to add that 2 of the 3 Cavs' losses have been 1 and 2 point losses (so very close games). I know, I know... the Cavs' win was a 1 point victory as well, but when your team is shooting that poorly and the Magic are relying on 3's late in the game just to keep up with Cleveland (and I must add they're shooting quite well from beyond the arc in the 2 or 1 point differenced games: 9-20 [.450], 10-23 [.435], 17-38 [.447]), you know that you're at least performing well (with 2 very tough losses)... even if you're down 3-1.

Boy, do I love a great discussion? SSreporters, get ready. I defend to the fullest.

"What?! You mean the man who has been averaging nearly a triple double throughout the season is not making his teammates better? Call me a history buff or not, but history has proved that the greatest players made their teammates better. They made their teammates show an ability to win without them. As a superstar and reigning MVP, James doesn't do that. He is a phenomenal player, but he in not the King. Perhaps, the people champion but not a King. Kobe has Fischer, Gasol and Horry. Jordan had Kerr, Pippen and Kukoc. Tim Duncan had Parker and Horry. Perhaps it is the coaching. I have said that the Brown needs to sit LeBron (how crazy?). This needs to happen to challenge the players, but with the amount of time LeBron has the ball he needs to feed his teammates repeatedly.

  • Follow Billups. He shoots later in the game, making sure his teammates are in the game before he is. If his teammates are down he pick them up.

LeBron James rarely lets his teammate fall down to see if they can rise on their own.

Stat: Lakers/Nuggets series 2-2. Cavaliers/Magic 3-1. Enough said.

"There is no way you can use 1 bad game out of 11 games to justify your point. In the first 2 games he was hitting nearly every jump shot imaginable. In game 1 I am confident he hit 6 of them in a row. He had a "sub-par" game in the form of a near 40-10-10 output."

James has improved his outside shot but it is still very spotty. I'm not using one game to highlight to simply highlight his weakness but to highlight the truth. James is a weaker outside shooter than the likes of Kobe. That's the very reason James only has 2 game winning shots. That is why Kobe is a CLOSER. The critics will all agree James outside shot needs to be improved. He improved it slightly this past off season.

"You seem to have some sort of weird vendetta towards LeBron James. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's your opinion after all. But when you bring up the stats to disprove a player's greatness, don't base it off 1 game while saying something a while back that Kobe is better than LeBron because he makes his teammates better when all statistics the past two or three years proves otherwise."

I do have this weird vendetta against James. I look at him and I'm amazed by what he can do, but at the same time I see what is holding this kid back: his inability to make others around him better. Last night, I felt sorry for him in the last few seconds of regulation. Then, he flopped. He was supposed to get that foul called. In my opinion, it was complete bullshit. Yes, the guy guarding him had his arm around him, but it wasn't (didn't) make him fall to the ground. Did he learn that from Acting 101 in college? Also, when he jumped into the Dwight Howard when Howard had already made his way back to the ground and he wanted another foul to be called. Bullshit. Missing free throws. The 8 or so turnovers he made when it was crucial to score, the play of a youth or a prince but surely not the play of a king.

In the end, Prince James made too many mistakes before Game 3, and in Game 4 he can't blame anyone but himself. He had the opportunity but he choked under the pressure. Before his acting and self-derailment, I felt sorry but now I don't feel sorry for the Prince (just contemptment.)

For the record, Kobe and the Lakers have had off games like that all of the time. Then, Kobe and the Lakers come back stronger. I don't know what will happen in tonight's game but I can guarantee you it will not be another Nuggets' blowout.

James is 24 years old. He's already done more with less than what Michael or Kobe has done.

He's already been to an NBA Finals (before getting the inevitable sweeping by the Spurs). He's already taken his team on his shoulders (game 5 against the Pistons in 2007) when they needed him the most.

I don't see where you can possibly blame LeBron for them losing this series. I will say his missed free throws are costly and that's the one area where Kobe is superior. But come on, even in game 4 his teammates he's kicking out to are wide open and missing.

Orlando is doing whatever the hell they want with Cleveland's defense from deep. Cleveland, not just LeBron, is not.

And do what? Kick it out to one of his (so far) useless teammates? He already did that in game 1 and they lost. He won game 2. Game 3 wasn't much of a game.

Game 4 he forced OT but his turnovers were the main reason they lost. This is the same criticism Kobe had when he had stiffs like Kwame Brown and Smush Parker around him.

It makes no sense whatsoever.

We do not have teams that have a starting line up of olympic type players. The olympic superstars were said in a context that utilized the team concept because as everyone knows that is what i know wins championship. almost everything i write about basketball is dealing with the team concept. and those same washed up players you're talking about helped to lead the cavaliers to the best record in the nba. the problem you guys have with this article is that I expect more from james. you guys will never expect more from him. as i said when writing on the ESPN editors wall (paraphasing) "LeBron will put out one more great individual performance and then his team will fall in Game 6." I guess i'm the only real prophet here. "The Sports Prophet" face it: when lebron was passing to his teammates early in the game (in game 5) instead of in the fourth quarter they dominated the magic. Prince James was listening to me. you guys should do the same.

Let me preface this by saying I am not watching the NBA playoffs. I'm not a fan of the NBA. I just thought you guys may want to know what I heard on the radio this morning.

I was listening to Mike and Mike this morning and they replayed an interview with Hubie Brown from last night. Hubie Brown says that a lot of the Cavs issues do not lie with LeBron or the rest of the team. The problem is coaching. In the playoffs, when talent gets more equalized, coaching becomes more important (Hmmm, where have I heard that before?) and the Cavs offense is predictable.

Anyway, Brown says that the Cavs keep running the same high pick and roll for LeBron. Putting the ball in his hands and leaving him with the decision to shoot or pass to a teammate. LeBron has done a good job of passing to the open teammate when the opportunity presents itself. But why keep running the same play all the time? They need to mix it up by running more plays for the other people and make Orlando defend more of the court.

You know what's ironic? Mike Brown is the 2009 NBA Coach of the Year.

After reading what you just read, Cheez, it looks like Van Gundy is doing a much better job at reading Cleveland's plays and using that to make smarter decisions and more efficient plays for Orlando. And that's why they're winning...

It went along with what Cheezer said about coaching. James can't make his teammates better no matter how great he is. I used to play the point guard position. I never tried to score until it was necessary, until my team was in the game mentally and scoring. I got my points but I never allowed my team to count solely on my play. We won more games because of it. Sit LeBron for the first two to five minutes and see how the team responds. if they come out swinging, James and enter the game and take it to the next level.

Look, Cleveland losing this series has nothing to do with LeBron James' "inability to make his his teammates better" (which is a totally bogus claim anyway; have you even watched the games? He's feeding guys in positions to make things happen, but they're not making shots), and everything to do with Cleveland's horrendous matchups on defense. Z has the size but not the quickness to defend Howard, so you pick and roll him to death and force Cleveland's hand -- you switch, and they kill you with penetrate-and-kick, or you don't switch, and Z is way too late getting to the spot. So what, you play Varejao then? He doesn't have the strength or the quickness to handle Dwight and the pick-n-roll. Orlando's the perfect team to destroy Cleveland, they shoot the lights out and have a beast inside that none of the Cavs bigs can deal with straight-up. Boston matched up pretty well w/ Orlando and almost beat them; Cleveland matches up well w/ Boston; Orlando is a killer matchup for Cleveland. It's rock, paper, scissors, and Cleveland drew the killer matchup this round. None of this has anything to do with some perceived inability of LeBron James to "elevate" his fairly mediocre teammates. They're basically all role players, their job being to play off James and make the most of their opportunities, and they haven't been doing that job, plain and simple.

like everyone else knows, if kobe would switch places with lebron, the cavaliers wouldn't be in this situation. King James choked last night. He can do more. He must do more (or in this case less) if he ever wants to claim that almost unattainable ring. No one caused King James to have 8 turnovers. He got them into OT with a faulty foul call. Let's call him what he is a great player that wants out of Cleveland to lose in New York, a player that cares too much about his own self to ever win a title. He'll win gold medals for forever until he retires because he has superstars around him. I can win almost anything with a mediocre partner. Greatness finds a way to win. Concede the argument: Kobe is better. 6-13 shooting. 8 assists. team leading 3-2. Bench LeBron and I guarantee there will be a different outcome. all that matters is the win and loss.

That is an absolutely ludicrous statement that just barely touches the surface on statistics when if you dig deeper LeBron is better than Kobe.

LeBron has a 2.68 assist-to-turnover ratio, Kobe has 1.88. He is far from selfish and he's only, I repeat only, 24.

I hope you remember that Kobe's first few playoff games were disastrous. In that game against the Jazz (I think in 1999) he fired up 2 airballs in succession, either one could've tied it. LeBron in just his 2nd try took a mediocre Cavs team to the finals.

I'll tell you what, if I'm on a team with two giant useless pieces o'crap as centers, and an inferior supporting cast and I'm making them look better than they really are........I'd tell you I'm LeBron James.

Kobe can make his teammates better but not nearly to the extent of LeBron.

your olympics analogy is horrible - We've had superstar teams for years, and yet it was only when we started to make an actual TEAM and started to utilize Lebron that we started to win again (see the 08 games). In 04 we had a very young Lebron who had yet to properly develop.

Anyways, Kobe hasn't won a championship without Shaq. Hell, Kobe hasn't won a championship since the lakers had that all star lineup. The lakers have a pretty good team this year. The cavs have Lebron, Gibson, a washed up Wallace, an injury prone center, Wally Szczerbiak, and Joe Smith. Lebron is getting double or triple teamed on almost every posession this series and he's still producing. It's not that they're not letting him get to the basket, its that they collapse their defense around him the second he gets the ball.

Tell me, do you think Kobe Bryant would be able to make a half court shot while he's double teamed? I'm gonna take a stab and say no. Lets look at the stats. Lebron is leading Kobe in Points, Rebounds, Assists, FG %, 3 PT %, Blocks, and Turnovers in the postseason. Seems to me like if anything, Kobe is the one with 3 pt shots, not lebron

that was funny. i've never been called a closet Lakers fan. Hell even when they were winning their championship rings i wasn't rooting for them. in all honesty, i would be content if the magic won the finals.

Basketball is LeBron's craft. He's been playing it his entire life. He knows how to play basketball better than he knows how to walk.

For the record, Prince James is an amazing basketball player, but in order for him to win that oh so elusive ring he has to make his teammates better. That mean's passing to them constantly in the beginning of the game whether they're making or missing shots. He will win that ring if he learns to do just what i said. I'm in awe of him but i like to see certain players win rings and i'm harder on them because i know it is possible.

Kobe learned this the hard way. Kobe let an all-star center go and he depended largely on hisself. Kobe is considered selfish when he puts up LeBron numbers now because he doesn't has to. so when Lebron doesn't have to put up LeBron numbers that is when he will win the ring.

In this series alone we've seen the following (and I won't include benchwarmers like Joe Smith):

Mo Williams - 36/97 (37%)

Delonte West - 35/78 (44%)

Anderson Varejao - 23/41 (56%)

Zydrunas Ilgauskas - 25/56 (44%)

_____________________________________________

Total - 119/272 (44%)

LeBron James - 75/154 (49%)

I don't care really what Varejao does because he keeps fouling out. But he is not getting the full support from everyone on a consistent basis. If you're trying to turn a PF like James, Chris Paul, then that's suicidal basketball.

Kobe Bryant has gotten his teammates involved. However, he has Pau Gasol, Trevor Ariza, and Andrew Bynum.

LeBron has Delonte West, Anderson Varejao, and Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

Kobe has a superior supporting cast.

Did you even watch game 6? LeBron decided to pass and pass and pass and they fell behind. By then LeBron's hot start cooled off and they were screwed.

He has done so much for his team (not to mention averaging a near triple-double so out goes your selfish theory) for 5 solid games and he just ran out of gas in game 6. Championship teams have a supporting cast that can back that up.

Cleveland did not have it. They also didn't have their "Coach of the Year" make any adjustments to defend the 3. They also failed to hold onto a 20+ point lead on multiple occasions.

You cannot blame LeBron, call him selfish, or inferior to Kobe when his teammates can't get off their ass and hit their WIDE OPEN threes.

Since when? Only Boobie Gibson bothered to show up. You forgot about game 5 of the ECF against the Pistons where LeBron single-handedly beat them down the stretch?

His cast helped him get the best record in the NBA.

They also helped him with his fishing reservations. The post-season is a whole different animal so you not everyone can transfer 82 regular season games into the big stage that is the NBA Playoffs.

Kobe teammates had 79 points from his assists alone

LeBron James had 48 assists in the Magic series, so already he's outperformed Kobe in that regard. Besides, the Lakers are a better shooting team overall. Game 1, LeBron kicks it out to Delonte West open for three!!!!! NO GOOD?!

Repeat the process for 4 out of the next 5 games and you've got his teammates in a nutshell IN THIS SERIES. The matchup against Orlando favored the Magic.

No one was complaining about them because it was a mismatch. They ran through them. Detroit is crap and Atlanta overachieved. Orlando had a gameplan and combined with their own ineptness, stopped his cast. LeBron had to make up for the slack of everyone else on his squad.
