5 Reasons why the Penguins will win the Cup...

1. Team Defense The Penguins’ defensive unit has gone under the radar all playoffs long. They’re giving up just less than two goals a game, and are even more remarkable at home. Pittsburgh’s giving up a whopping average of 1.6 goals a game at the friendly confines of The Igloo. They’ve got great balance of youth and experience, too. Gonchar and Hal Gill are the older and wiser ones, and Letang and Whitney are just scratching the surface. There’s no reason this unit will slow down in the Finals versus the Red Wings.

2. Marc-Andre Fleury Fleury has developed into one of the best goaltenders in the NHL in these playoffs. He has played his best while under the most pressure. Fleury is 12-2 with a 1.70 GAA. He also holds the best save percentage in the postseason (.938 SV%). The 23-year-old netminder is a big reason why the Pens have rolled through the Eastern Conference. I can’t see him faltering on the big stage like some other young goalies have.

3. 87 & 71 Super-duper stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin anchor the Pens’ top two lines, and have become the faces of the franchise this season. Both are in the top five in points this postseason, along with their teammate Marian Hossa. Crosby leads the playoffs with 17 assists, and Malkin has scored some huge goals. The strength of these two are enough to override the Wings’ defensive prowess in this series. They also make the players around them better. Ryan Malone is suddenly a household name ever since he was put on Malkin’s line. Hossa is finally fighting off his playoff demons playing alongside Crosby. 87 & 71 are the two numbers that Detroit coach Mike Babcock needs to focus on over the next couple weeks.

4. The Igloo Pittsburgh has won every game they’ve played at home this postseason. The old arena has witnessed many great moments in these playoffs. The Pens have won in every which way possible at The Igloo. Coming back from a 3-0 deficit, blowing a lead and prevailing, blowing out their opponent in a clinching game, and winning a see-saw battle. It doesn’t look like the Penguins will be losing anytime soon wearing their black sweaters.

5. The ‘it’ factor As I said before, the Pens have had many great moments this playoff season. Crosby and Malkin are the best 1-2 punch in the league. Fleury is living up to his #1 draft pick. Their role players are playing beyond expectations. They just have ‘it’. It’s hard for me to describe. But there’s always that one team that has ‘it’ when you get into mid-May. The Hurricanes and Ducks had ‘it’ the last two years, and the Pens have it this year.

And that is why this will be such a good series.

This will be a great series.

Along what the Anon said above, I present...

===5 Reasons why the Red Wings will win the Cup...===

1. Team Defense. The Wings are giving up less than 2 goals per game.
2. Chris Osgood (10-2). Ozzie is leading the NHL in this years playoffs with 1.60 GAA. His save percentage is .931 and he's been here before. Remember, he already has two rings. One as a back-up and one as the starter.
3. 40 and 13These two lead the NHL in +/- in the playoffs. Two rising stars that are both in the top 5 in playoffs for points and goals.
4. The Joe There's nothing like Cup hockey in Detroit. Detroit fans know that now is when it matters and they will bring the energy.

All joking aside, this should be a great series. The Pens are a young, up and coming team. Put that against the experience and also youth of the Wings and it should be a pretty even match up. A hot goalie can make all the difference.

I hate to burst the Penguins fans' bubble, but I think their team has met their match. Yes, they overpowered both Ottawa and Philadelphia while also getting by the Rangers, but Pittsburgh is going to have their hands full with Detroit.

And as I mentioned in my Resident Interview (5/13/08) interview, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg are the one duo that can match Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. They may not get the attention that Crosby and Malkin receive (which is unfair here). All you have to do is look at how they dominated the Stars in the Western Conference Finals.

I'm going to save much of my thoughts on the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals (yes, it's "Finals", unlike what the NHL has had the announcers say as it's a series, not one game) for an upcoming article, but it's safe for me to say this is going to be a great series.

It was a general statement. Not to response to anyone from here, but I've been hearing from Penguins fans from elsewhere in my online communication that they think their team can take out Detroit without realizing how good the Red Wings really are. Some were saying in four or five games, too. I'm saying to them, hello? Don't you think that even without Johan Franzen that they were able to finish off Dallas in dominating fashion? The Stars may not have a pair with Crosby and Malkin, but they play a sound system under Dave Tippett to work with. But their inability to score consistency did them in.

I think it's going to be quick series. I can't even begin to predict who will win though. I think the first game (first goal for that matter) will have a HUGE impact on the entire series.

And Porthenator, I haven't been able to keep up lately with my blog (I have so many posts saved as drafts right now and need to finish them), but I'd like to add you to my blogroll. Is it for a particular team or the NHL in general (like mine)? Nice job on your blog and I especially like you home page design. Keep up the nice work!

Thanks! It's for the NHL in general..

I never said the Pens were going to roll through the Wings. I've just posted a new article with 5 reasons why Detroit will win. Neither team will make it look easy. The one problem I see with Zetterberg & Datsyuk is that they're on the same line. The Pens' 'D' can focus on that line, especially if Franzen is still suffering from his post-concussion syndrome. Malkin & Crosby anchor two different lines, and both can score at will. They also match Detroit's role players with a nice set of their own... Kennedy, Staal, Talbot and company are more fresh and faster than Draper, Drake, Samuelsson and company.

It should still be a great series!

It should be a GREAT series. I'm pulling for the Red Wings. Hopefully the Red Wings can contain Crosby! I'm so pumped! There's even been some smack talk going on here!
